I have decided to use carbon arrows on my moose hunt this year. I'm a complete newbie to carbon so this may be a dumb question. I have tried a few different shafts and the Axis 400 shoot real well for me. My question is are the brass inserts in 50-75 or 100 grain any stronger than the alum inserts ? I would like to stay with the alum so I don't get too much FOC as I already have a 175 broadhead and 100 steel broadhead adaptor up front. I'm ordering more shafts so I can play with spine/point weight. I just don't want a weak link in my set up.
In my opinion, the weak link is the carbon section from the front of the shaft to the front of the insert. I've had that portion of the shaft fail way before the insert failed. On a hard impact, the carbon can split or crack. The problem can be solved by using a 1"-1.75" aluminum sleeve. With my axis arrows sleeved, I can literally shoot them into rocks without breaking.
Great info I was thinking about that.

Here is a picture for a better example
S2, is that sleeve part of another shaft or? Do you just glue it on or?
thanks
It's just a 1.5" pc cut from a 1916 easton aluminum shaft. I just epoxy the sleeve over the carbon shaft. The guys here put together a chart for different size shafts. I'll go look for it now.
I think this is it.

Bob, if want toshoot brass just eliminate the 100 grain BH adapter and go with a short aluminum one which is 27 grains I believe, than get the axis inserts you can saw off in 25 grain increments. You can get same FOC and also add the alum. sleeve to help strenthen the point end of the shaft. I have at leat a dozen of the brass inserts in 100 graiun, if ya want them let me know! Shawn
You can always use axis 400 fullmetal jackets it is carbon on the inside and aluminum on the outside, use regular insert,I use 250 grain up front never had any problems with the front being weak and have shot 50 or so animals with them.seem to be alittle stronger than regular carbon,I have shot both.
I have tried the alum broadhead adaptors and they seem to break just in front of the threads when they hit something hard.Seems like a week point. I think 275 up front is ok but when I start getting 375 up front they seem real front heavy.
Shawn, The guy you shipped the bow to said to thank you for a great packing job !
Bob
Bob, the axis with no sleeve is going to be stronger than the wood you've been shooting ...besides I've seen you shoot, ain't like you're going to shoot at a Moose and hit a rock instead :) if you're aims off a little you'll probably split a couple ribs as opposed to sliping it right between them :campfire:
Larry,
Thanks for your confidence in my shooting. But after getting a up close look at the ribs of a moose on my last hunt I want everything as tough as possible ! They are like shooting at a picket fence.

I shoot axis 400's with 100gr brass inserts and 1.5" 1916 alum shaft. They are tuff as nails. I shot one into the side of an old pickup just to see how it would hold up. I still shoot that arrow daily! Love em.
Daniel,
That seems like a great combo but my concern is 175 grain Broadhead + 100 grain Broadhead Adaptor + 100 grain insert. When I put all of this weight on the front of the arrow it's real front heavy. Seems to dive quickly at about 20 yards ?
look at three rivers they have a 125 gr insert with the taper that glues in . I like them and if you add the sleeve you are all set no need for steel adapter glue the head right on. Drew

Bob, get yourself some Grizzlystik's, I would be a little concerned on the issue of penetration with a footed carbon shaft but the again I shoot lighter weight bows.
Jim I really don't see the footing as an issue since its only 1.5 " long and 1916 size right behind the head which is larger. The axis are pretty skinny anyways and get great penetration. jmho
