Went on a "walkabout" today with my longbow. I had 3 broadhead arrows and 3 squirrel arrows and was intending on losing all the squirrel arrows. I left home on foot and dropped off in the satilla Creek swamp. Its not very big but a beautiful place and where I began hunting nearly 40 years ago with a 410 bore singleshot shotgun. Very few deer and Turkeys around here then and squirrels , rabbits and coons were fair game. Any Duck bagged made a young feller look big and Granny would cook wood ducks and dressing or actually anything I brought home with a smile. Good times.
I eased on in the swamp at a fairly slow pace. Deer have been hunted hard here and I was not really expecting a chance at one. I was after squirrels and canecutters. I made it to "root" lake a small slew where I once caught a 2 lb Warmouth. My uncle was a postman and weighed him before fry time. did`nt know it but was the state record at the time. A narrow blackwater lake about 8 ft deep in the run....

Followed it for a while and came to a flat caused by a beaver dam and decided to sit here a while .....

After a while I could hear something I slowly eased forward curious because it was making to much noise for a squirrel. It was a coon . I normally don`t shoot them but a Lady at work said she wanted one and would take all I brought her so I shot this one.

I hung him up in a tree because a coon is a bit more than I want to tote around and continued on my walk. I made it to a deer crossing I hunt some and went by the remains of a doe I killed here last year. I was a mile from the house so critters killed here get boned out on the spot...

I circled back around towards Mrs. Clara`s coon and decided to sit in between two water oaks for a while that had plenty of acorns still on the ground. A few minutes after I sat down I heard Turkeys then saw 4 hens go by. Heard a bit of flapping and probably 15 or so flew up to roost. After a few minutes three squirrels were stirring and one was in a small tree about 10 feet up barking his head off at me. Knowing it would`nt get any better I took the shot . The tree was about 8 steps and he was 10 feet or so up and he got really Whacked. I really like these small game "washers" that go behind field points for squirrels.

i had a neighbor about 40 years or so ago that would barbeque raccoon for us if we brought her one. She slow cooked it in the oven for about 4 hours. It was delicious!

Happy New Year to you!
May your new year be filled with His love, joy and peace!

Darn good shootin'. Whatcha gonna do with the 'coon? I like squirrel (not as much as rabbit) and had 'coon before (it was good) and would love to make a possibles bag with the pelt....Phil
Thanks fellers. No legend Brother Mudd just a feller that get lucky a lot.I`m blessed to live where there is a long season and lots of swamp I can hunt. I miss a whole lot more squirrels than I hit.
Cookus, I save all my defective arrows. Bent aluminums, carbons broke behind the insert...you get the picture. I`ll weight them up with a point that makes them shoot where I`m looking and straighten the aluminums on the table and when that squirrel runs up the tree and thinks he`s ok and the other fellers are looking at him in fear of losing their arrow....I shoot. The aluminums range from 2016 - 2020. I got a bunch of culls.I use my stumping arrows at one on the ground.I had a bunch of old broadheads I was using as well but I`m bout out of them . I`ll start rabbit hunting in Febuary and loose a lot of arrows in the marsh after swamp rabbits.
I also will buy up all the carbons at walmart when they go on sale.I like shooting at squirrels...RC
