So I bought a pair of Filson Charcoal Field Pants last night. (Amazing pants...)
They are closer to black than they are gray. I am leaving for a hunting trip next week, and I am looking for some ideas on how to Camo them and still have them look pretty nice.
Whether it is taking strips of camo, green, or brown fabric, and sewing them on to make some type of shaggy pants, etc...
Open to any ideas, or pics too.
Thanks guys!
I've never found black/charcoal to be a detriment when hunting on the ground. After all, most tree trunks are black/charcoal. I have spray painted some of my dark wool pants with lighter colors and white for use in tree stands. Tends to wear off over time, but works pretty well in the short run.
Where and how are you hunting? The good 'ol Tyvek Snow Camo Coveralls (aka white disposable painting coveralls) can be had at Lowes or Home Depot for ground hunting in the snow.
Can they be dyed?
Why not get some leafy wear to pull over wool and not take a chance on ruining the wool pants?
I am no help in camo-ing them for you, but I have been wearing those pants (in that color) for about 5 years and I have had no issues with the color.
I have killed a bunch of deer, shot a moose, missed a few elk, looked at several turkey, had countless small game in range, etc... None of them laughed at me for not wearing camo.
I think wool by nature is it's own camo. It absorbs light like animal fur does and not reflect light like modern fabrics do.
I wouldn't worry about it. They will be fine just the way they are. Pat is right on.
I have several "Malone" pants and bibs....no need to be camo.
I would just wear em and not worry about it.
you could wear a pair of camo pants overtop of them i would think,if it would help your confidence..imo
I've successfully used a 4 step process:
1. Pull up Sleeping Indian Website
2. Call SI phone number and tell them what I want.
3. Give them VISA card number
4. Check mailbox 3 days later.
Hope it works as well for you as it does for me!!!
Couldn't be simpler. Stand still. If you stand still in front of back cover - all the better. Ta-da!
i wouldnt do anything to the pants. bet ya do fine hunting in em just like they are.
i am with the just wear them crowd.
Agreed. I think they'll be just fine.
I tried the calling SI idea and it all worked, except having a package in the mailbox 3 days later! Ted is a little backed up right now and will hopefully get my bibs out over the next couple weeks. Grey camo bibs...
Should I tell my wife that she got 'em for me for Christmas?
I have worn LL Bean and Filson wool pants for a good bit of time and never worried about the color.... Deer in Maine, NY, NJ and Pa back in the 60's never blinked even in the snow.... Doesn't seem like that color bothers Illinois deer either......
Wear em the way they are and you'll be fine.
I need to come hunt some of your deer Bruce, mine can find me in a ghillie. :) Any easy way to add some camo to them would be use some of the pin on leaves, pretty simple and would help break it up some. You will probably be fine however just as you are.

This is what I've alway's read, so I'll take it to be true! Don't worry about the pant's, just wear them! Jason
I have taken spray paint flat colors and painted wool a ton of times it wears off after time but can be redone it works on the olive drab military pants just fine put it on almost like an airbrush would for coverage.
I don't think you'll be able to dye them anyway... I have the same filson gear and I think it's too dark to take a dye. If your adamant, google "RIT DYE" for techniques.
If I were to camo the dark grey (never tried it but...) I'd paint just a couple or three 4" horizontal and vertical stripes using a light grey spray or fabric paint.....Phil
Those ol charcoal greys will do fine. They will just think your lower body is just aburned up old stump. Now making them scent free with a good scent eliminating soap, thats were its at.If you get busted,it will most likely be the movent of arms or head ,even eye balls that will get ya.Good Luck, hope you get a big one.
Maybe just some 3" or 4" diagonal stripes instead :dunno: I don't think it matters to the deer but I just always felt like a big dark blob sitting there without some broken pattern....Phil
I am giving up camo completely because I have found it is much like fishing lures, made to catch a lot more fisherman then fish.
What size are your pants? I just happen to have a pair of like new Filson Mackinaw pants in timber camo. Mighty nice pants but might trade for some in similar shape. Mine are 36X 30 I think with a couple more inches that could be let out on the hem
