Season started this past 27 of november, and the rut kicked in last week. I am amazed of what a beauty of an animal whitetails are and how they graze silently thru our woods. They are so unique each with different racks, faces, scars.
I am using this thread as therapy, I could call it Psychotherapy.
Usually I am not to picky on trophy bucks, I learned the hard way thru several seasons of tag soup, but this year I have controlled myself to use the one and only tag I have for a great buck, not a monster buck, a great old, well lived , well traveled fullfield buck.
A buck that deserves my respect and will be given an honor place on the wall.
Last year I used my tag early in the season , and I dedicated myself to hunting javalina thru spot and stalk.
On one of this hunts I entered the woods, and I jumped a doe. I quickly came on my knees as I usually do when I jump an animal and just stayed there and didn´t move at all. After 20 seconds of just staying there I felt thumps on the floor and some movement toward me. It was a buck that was trailing the doe, It was an old 12 pointer, that encounter lives with me and we had eye contact for more than a minute at 15 yds. I had no tags left and I could only enjoy the time and moment with him.
I always enjoy your posts, Gerardo... keep it up!
:clapper:
A friend of mine placed a trail camera close to where I had this encounter and this year he came up. I am pretty sure it is him
If not, he is a great old one, not too much points and measurement and etc etc. But he is a buck I want and fills my criteria of old, well lived and big buck

What am i saying not too much points , I am wetting my pants now, I hope hope hope , we meet again
I will do my best, get there early , not make too much noise, and be patience , virtue I have to yet master and develop
hope he is not leaving for good

Good luck and keep it comeing. That old buck is a dandy for sure.
We think alike Gerardo. Maybe why your threads are easy to read. Thanks for the post & pix. Best of luck.
Now that's what i call hunting my friend!!!!
Great looking buck! Good luck.
out in NM is that a coues? If so it is a monster. either way that is a danday and wide.
Not a Coues but a "texan" withetail is the subspecies we have in the northeast of Mexico.
Way to go Gerardo! keep up the hard work and it will pay off!
Good Luck
Good luck with that old buck Gerardo!

Do you have this type of Texas Whitetail as far south as Aguascalientes?
A great deer for sure. Good luck with the quest.
That is a buck that will make any mans knees shake. Good luck with him my friend.
TODAY
4:45 am alarm goes on , usually I don't wake up with a smile on my face but for hunting thats different. I just get up and have all if my clothes ready I never prepare too much as I do for hunting. I have the coffee pot ready , bow in the truck, boots in the entrance and everything is in place. I drive to the lease which is 1hrs away. Usually I sleep in the ranch but having a 3 month old baby and a 2 yr toddler in the house , I need to make points with the wife and help out

not as "free range" as there are 14 different subspecies of withetail deer in Mexico:
1. O.v. texanus Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas y Chihuahua.
2. O.v. couesi Sonora, Chihuahua y Durango.
3. O.v. carminis Coahuila.
4. O.v. miquihuanensis Coahuila.
5. O.v. acapulcensis Sur de Michoacán y Guerrero.
6. O.v. veraecrucis Sur de Tamaulipas.
7. O.v. truei Sur de Quintana Roo.
8. O.v. oaxacensis Región de la sierra de Oaxaca
9. O.v. thomasi Campeche.
10. O.v. sinaloae Sinaloa y Jalisco.
11. O.v. Nelson Chiapas.
12. O.v. mexicanus Michoacán, Puebla, Querétaro, Guerrero y Oaxaca.
13. O.v. yucatanensis Campeche y Quintana Roo.
14. O.v. toltecus Oaxaca.
O.v is for "Odocoileus Virginianus" whitetail deer scientfic name, acording to the next map deer in Aguascalientes could be coues or miquihuanensis

However a lot of Hig Fence ranchs are now offering "Texas whitetails" across the country where they are breed and managed same as "exotics"

Being that christmas and new years where a Saturday , those are two weekends I can not go hunting, so squezzing time during the week has to be done.
The plan was go hunt in the morning and be back at work by noon
the lease is 1hr away and my blind is 20 minutes into the hills.
So I was ready at my blind by 6:50 am
I am using a ground blind this year a pop up, it helps and gives me some handicap with certain movements, where we hunt we only have mezquites and they are not to tall. I have gotten on mezquites with a sneaky sac and a tree stand , but big old bucks are way too smart, and they see you before you even know their coming.
My plan was to hunt untill 11 am if I didn't see a very big one by that time I will be out.
at 8:00 am this guy came 10yds from my blind,
If this was another year or if I didn't have my mind set and focused on my goal he would have met my douglas fir stos tipped arrow.

I am on a Mission ,
and i need to be the most time outside and have a lot of patience and do things right,
of course luck will play its game,
and if I am lucky to hunt a big one I will do all of my part to try and make a good shot, if I don't I don't , only time will tell, but I will do my job
Wish we had bucks like that walking the streets in my town!
good luck
Great Thread,
Thank you for the information on Aguascalientes :-)
For those of you that do not know, Central Mexico has an abundance of rugged beautiful mountainous country. The people are extremely friendly and helpful as well, just like tradgangers.
And the weather is like a nice spring day year round.
I was not aware that the deer were so well racked.
Good luck with your hunt!
awesome thread. even with that big buck ya have your eyes on there is no way i could have passed that last buck lol...
guspup,
thanks , people in Mexico are friendly and we are very into family values and moral actions.
I hunted those mountains this year on May, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas are famous for Gould Turkey and Coues deer. Gould Turkey is the biggest specie of turkey , they are about twice the size of a rio grande.
I shot a good one , but couldn´t find it, they did find it two days after we left. So no hero pic there but a great and amazing time and scenery
Way to be patient. Hold out for el venado grande!
Buena suerte! Que grande ciervo!
On one of my trips to Zacatecas, I spent the day exploring Chicomostoc. There they had a display of many arrow points that were found on the site. Many were very small, and excellently made. I can imagine it must have been very exciting for one of our early ancestors to hunt the Gould Turkey or Coues Deer with the stone point and primitive bow. :-)
I have also spent alot of time hiking in the mountains of el Ocote. Beautiful Country.... and so remote it brings you back in time.
You are lucky to have such a great museum in Monterrey to preserve your ancient history. Many Trad Gangers I'm sure would find it very interesting.
Todo parece bien amigo. Que viejo este, se llamaria "El Doce"!
Cazale fuerte, y fotos por favor!
-Alex
Gerardo, :notworthy: for your restraint, that is a nice buck :)
Your season is already better than mine was. Good luck!
you are a better man than me passing up that deer. Happy hunting
That map with all the subs on it which one is coues. I have live on the board a few times and I know that area 3 in the northern part has coues. I lived in souther AZ and could have spit spit across the board chasing coues there.
KellyG
yes area 3 is coues, they are very difficult bucks, ghosts of the desert
You dont have to tell me, I tried them with a bow. I had several chases at mature bucks but a doe seen me or we would see each other at the same time. I can think of 3 buck my last year in az that were close two less than 20yrds and one at 40yrd and I just ran out of cover. I will go back and try agian someday. Unlike any white I have ever hunted they trust their eyes period if they see you they are gone.
Good luck
I smell a big buck down here real soon. I can feel it my friend.
Gerardo:
Where at on the map are you hunting?
The plot thickens. Best to you.
Earl
Thanks for all of your good wishes hopefully I will get a big one , Monterrey is in the north east part of Mexico our area is #9 and we have Texas whitetail , we border with south Texas and it's one of the best areas for whites , they eat cacti and salt dirt being as desert like as it is you never believe they grow this big
Ahhhh, just as I suspected, salt dirt eating whitetails!
The minerals and forage down there is incredible, trust me.
That is some restraint you have passing up that "little" buck! Good luck with the big one! How long is your season?
Good luck on that giant
good luck...that is a monster
Waiting has been hard , i waited and this buck just eludes me. Season ends next weekend but it will be hard to go , so this will be my last
Hope I het lucky to shoot
I won't jinx you by wishing you good luck so instead I'll say "I hope you get one of your nice arrows all bloody".
we got our fingers crossed for ya...
