Title: Plains style quiver ?
Post by: two4hooking on December 20, 2010, 12:52:00 PM
For you folks that hunt with the plains style quiver....

Do right handers usually wear it under the right arm or left.

I am thinking of building one of these in the future and I am curious as to what is more widely done???

I'm a lefty, but prefer to wear mine behind me with the nocks just to the outside of my left back pocket.

Same as Adeeden here. Use mine for stumping and small game.

Make the strap so it is removable and if you don't like it on one side you can flip the strap for the other side. I use an external stiffener stick on these style quivers and attach the strap to that with a simple thong and wood disc medallion.

I'm RH and wear it on my right side.

When you look at a lot of the period quivers you start to see some trends.  One the plains where the horse was prevalent you see many quivers worn on the left side.  Makes sense - that'd be the easiest way to draw while on horseback.

Back East or in the SW you see a whole lot more worn on the right - easier, IMO, to manuever the quiver while walking through the brush.  You see the same style in early art from Britain as well worn the same way.

Find what works best for you.

The versatility of this quiver is its great appeal.

I am RH and wear mine slung over the left shoulder and hanging under my right arm most of the time.  I also shift it to the back or I can hold it under my armpit when having to crawl.

I love it for stumping and roving, but do not hunt with it.  Why?    :dunno:

Thinking about getting or making one, I have a big make otter skin that I trapped last yr and is looking more and more like a quiver. I htink these quivers may be good in my area as the brush is so thick. Great ideas yall.
