I have a 60" recurve that"slaps" the limbs no matter where I set the brace height. I can tune it to shoot good from 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 (brace height) but can't get away from the slap. Is 7 1/2 enough or am I missing something?
with the recurves i use i pad the limbs with felt at the contact area of the limb, then wrap the string at the contact area in yarn to pad it even more.
this plus fur or yarn string silencers makes most of the recurves i've used near totally silent.
hope this helps.
7 1/2 sounds like it could still be low for a 60" recurve. My 60" recurves don't behave until I get to 8" or a bit more. It sounds to me like you need a string that is 1" shorter so you can be working with a better brace height. Andrew also gave good advice about getting a recurve quieter.
Good luck with it.
By the way, you should move this post over to Pow Wow. You will get more responses there.
You didn't say what kind of string you have on the bow. I like B-50 with BowHush on my recurve. To me that is the quietest combo I have found.
Light arrow weight can cause loud bow noise. Heavy arrows will usually quiet a bow with the proper brace height. Since your bow is 60" long, what is the poundage of the bow and what is the overall weight of the arrows you're shooting?
I like to use Bow Hush on any recurve I have, great product and does a great job.
yes, do try bow hush - it's job is to silence the slap on recurves, and it does the quite well.
Bow Hush and Hush Puppies!!
they will do the trick....my recurve is silent!
I am a tough cookie to sell. But since back and trying a couple new things Bow Hush and Puppies flat out work, for me, IMO.
Also I am a B-50 guy and making the above statement only using that string, but by far Hush has out preformed all other silencers I have tried in years past.

Bow Hush is the bomb. Try it.
If its an endless loop string it will be noisy. My recipe is flemish twist string, with yarn puffs just above the fadeouts, moleskin pads on limb tips where string contacts limbs, proper brace height, and heavier arrow.
Be aware that all of these also slow arrow speed, but its worth the tradeoff for a hunting bow.
I cant stand a noisy bow, even for target shooting. All my bows are for both, so they are setup for quiet hunting
Thanks for the info gang. Let give the hush and hvy arrow a try.
I use a Flemish twist string with B50, and my own beaver silencers on my 60" Bear Grizzly. It's super quiet and my brace ht. is about 7.5" and of course a 500+ gr. arrow helps alot. I can really tell a difference from shooting lighter carbons versus heavier woods.
Generally speaking 7.5" is a good STARTING point for a 60" recurve. The older Bear bows were often braced over 9" and some up to 10". I've never had to go that far, but 8" or a little higher isn't unusual.
As has been stated repeatedly, Bow Hush works great for silencing recurves, especially with Flemish strings. Endless strings do tend to be a bit louder, but I think that also varies with the type of serving used. I also agree that you will have the best luck with an arrow of 10 grains per pound of draw weight or a bit more. Once you hit 12 gpp, you are at the point of diminishing returns from what I have seen.
My 60" Black Bear with a B50 Flemish twist string, moleskin over the string grooves, and single cat whiskers is plenty quiet. I haven't needed to use Bow Hush on it. I mainly use it for bow fishing now, but have hunted deer with it as well.
Keep tinkering, it will get quiet when you hit the right combo.
My 60" kodiac likes 7 3/4"
That aside try the above suggestions for limb padding..loops of velcro, stick on felt, bow hush, etc.
My 60 inchers like 7 7/8 to 8 1/4. Lots of slap under that.
I set my 60" at 7 1/4, that is where it shoot's the best. Bow hush, or that method works better than anything I've tryed. The thing that help's the most is wrapping the yarn on the ends of the string. That greatly reduces the slap! Jason
Experiment with the placement of hush puppies on the string also. The last time I changed strings I moved them two inches each closer to the nocking point and this made my recurve even quieter.
I reckon I'm going to have to give some of these other techniques a try. I'm pretty satisfied with just brace height tweaking and catwhiskers. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing?
Boy,these guys pretty well covered it.I was going to give you my two cents but now dont have time as I have to go get some bow hush dealybobs .Gotta go.Good luck.Watch those arrows being too light .theyllmake lots o noise.
Lots of good advice already posted. I prefer yarn puff silencers and a b-50 string. Mine are plenty quiet with just that.
Put a set of catwhiskers on with small zip ties just tight enough that you can slide them on the string.
Set them 4 1/2" from where the string contacts the bow limb and start shooting. Move them 1" at a time towards your string nock point.
You will be surprised at how quiet your bow will be with the catwhiskers this close to the limb tips.
Remember the old brush buttons, they used to cure string slap.I think the catwhiskers do the same thing only better.
