Chris Surtees has gone on before us. He died in a motorcycle accident last night.
Please keep his family in your hearts and prayers.
Chris and his dad Larry have been tremendous contributors on Trad Gang for a long time. They gave of their time and knowledge both willingly and graciously. And they always gave a huge effort for the annual St Judes Auction as well.
I was fortunate enough to ride in the truck with Chris last year at Solana Ranch, and was looking forward to seeing him again soon. He was also a seasoned hunter and woodsman. Someone you could take advice from to the bank.
Chris will always be remembered here for all the positive things he represented in his life, and he will be deeply missed.

My condolences and prayers go out to the family.
Just got the call from Rob and Vance...my heart is broken. I talked to him about a week ago trying to hook up for a hunt at the club we shared...we made tentative plans for after Christmas or at worst a hog hunt after the first of the year in his neck of the woods. How tentative is our time here.
Larry and family, I am holding you up in prayer. May His peace comfort you as I pray it will all of us while we suffer through this loss. You know that all you need to do is call should you need anything.
Cherish every moment gentlemen, make your peace with God and tell those you love how much you love them....for not one of us are guaranteed a tomorrow.
I'll be doing my best to focus on the fond memories of the camps we shared, his laughter and dry wit, and that mischievous twinkle he always had in his eyes. I know he touched many, many lives in the same positive fashion. Our world is a bit dimmer with his passing.
May God be with his Family and help them to cope.
He will be missed greatly. My prayers for him and his family.

Chris and Larry are two of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. Larry is the first person I met when we moved into the neighborhood six years ago and has been the nicest guy and best neighbor anyone could ask for. They are the ones who turned me on to this site and took me on my only bow fishing trips. The first time I shot a traditional bow was on the bow of Chris' boat. I sure hated to read about this today. Deepest sympathy and prayer for friends and family.
Father God, I ask that you give all of us time to heal through the loss of our friend Chris, as we will all miss his words of wisdom here at TradGang.
Father I ask that You be with the Surtees family as they search for the answer to the "Why" about this whole ordeal. Be with them as they grieve through their loss.
Father it is so hard, when some one of Chris Surtees caliber passes long before we has humans feel they should. Only You know the reasons why, but Your creation of Chris Surtees touched many lives in special ways. We serve for just a short time here on earth, for Your purpose.
Today Father, I need strength and guidance.
Amen

Oh my Lord, I was just emailing him a day or so ago, and was in touch with Larry last night. Aint no words to help, but I will pray hard for Larry and all the family. Chris this summer sent my daughter a bow, some of you may remember the pics I posted of her and her huge happy smile. He wouldn't hear of letting me pay him for it or shipping. The Lord got him a very good one last night. He will be missed greatly !!!! I am in shock, my deepest heartfelt sympathie's. Here's the pic of my daughter as soon as she got the bow from the box, what a Awesome memory he gave her and her Daddy. I do imagine when Chris met the Lord last night and he was told well done faithful servant.... a smile much bigger than this one came across Chris's face.

I'm a very emotional person , and don't handle news like this very well...Even though I only spent a week, earlier this year with Chris, It really was an honor to meet such a man!
What he has done in his service for our country is truly remarkable...he was a true patriot.
The stories he told were spellbinding. It's hard to believe that someone who has been through all he's been thru so far overseas has been taken from us close to home...some things are just very hard to understand.
It's amazing how someone can leave such an impression on you...he'll be missed by everyone who's life he touched.
Prayers sent to the Surtees family.
Larry, meeting you in a couple weeks is going to have a whole new feeling now...my heart is heavy for you brother...
I was so looking forward to seeing and hunting with him again in 2 weeks...

Sad news; thoughts and prayers from VA.
Continued thoughts and prayers for the Surtees family.
Chris, You're not really gone - physically yes, you're gone, but spiritually you're not. You'll still be around the campfires, on the trails and in the stands with us because you've become a part of those of us who were privileged to know you and share a camp with you. We'll hear you on the wind and in the silence of the woods and in the rustle of game moving. We'll hunt together many more times, brother, just not quite the way we thought. You'll be here until the last of us walks down his own final trail, and at the end we'll join you and hunt the woods and fields of eternity together. Peace and good hunting, brother.
My thoughts are with Surtees family.
Chris was a tremendous member of Tradgang, and a fine gentleman. We shared a few thoughts and laughs through P.M.'s during the St. Jude's auction. He will be missed but not forgotten. May his family and friends find peace, and rejoice for the time they were able to spend with Chris.
My prayers are for his family.

This makes me sick, he was such a nice guy and I truly enjoyed talking with him...been thinking about him all day.
Mason and I just read all 20 pages to date..... Never got to meet him in person but experienced nothing but good when it came to Chris Surtees. I wanted to meet him when he was passing thru with DW and Skyler , just never got too and now it it too late.... His 160 gr Snuffers are in my quiver this year and until they are gone, he was quite the horse trader, that is for sure.
Prayers sent from TN for Larry and the entire Surtees clan. Lost my father-in-law last Feb 16th suddenly and know how hard it is when one minute all is well and the next they are gone. He will be sorely missed by all here on the gang.
Wow....what a shame. Feel for the family and friends. Prayers to all. Larry, I'm so sorry guy. I ride a bike and know, "You've gotta drive like they're all tryin' to kill ya." Cause some of 'em are. Sorry guy, real sorry.

I just got off the phone with Larry. My wife has talked with him several times today. Skyler just spent half an hour with him. Every single time he has asked did we see the outpouring of affection on here.
He has read every single post here.
They mean more to him than words can express.
TradGang was a huge part of Chris' life.
It helped him pass many lonely hours while overseas.
We are gonna spend the week-end with Larry and his family and when we get back, we'll start a thread of pics we have of Chris....

Prayers sent up from my family for yours.

Like all of you here, Chris has been at the front of my mind since I heard the news this morning. There is a real ache in my heart today, and I know it helps me to be able to see that I am not alone in my pain. I am sure it is some comfort to Larry and the family as well.
Chris was a very special man, and it is obvious from reading every single one of these posts how many lives he has touched, either in person sharing a camp, buying, selling and trading, or his always thoughtful and insightful posts here.
As I thought of Chris all day, I felt so bad for the things he will miss. I know how much he was looking forward retiring next year and having even more time to spend doing the things he loved so much, with people that he truly loved.
When I really think about it though, Chris was a very lucky man, and got everything there was to get out of the time he had with us here on earth. He had the well earned respect of everyone he came in contact with, and will live on in our memories with honor and admiration. We should all hope to be so fortunate.
I regret that I was only able to share one precious camp with him, but I am forever thankful that I at least have that one to remember him by.
Farewell my friend. I am proud to have known you.
While I did not know Chris personally, I enjoyed his reports on his hunting and fishing adventures here on Trad Gang. Over the years I have had a few e-mail exchanges with him, and my daughter and I were blessed by some good deals made with Chris. My family and I have been offering up prayers for Chris, his family, relatives, and friends throughout this day of mourning.
Chris's death *is* a loss - a major loss - and healing takes time...precious time.... My family and I will continue to lift all of the Surtees up in prayer throughout this Season of Advent and on in to the New Year of 2011.
I know that Chris would want every one of his family members and friends to receive the gifts of strength and courage that only our Lord can provide in order to get through this ordeal and continue to move on and prosper with new experiences and friends throughout their lives, just as Chris was blessed with tremendous experiences and friends in his own short time here on earth.
Rest in peace Chris!
And may the grace of God's peace rest on all of his loved ones!
Sincerely in Christ, David Camp
I also had the pleasure of meeting Chris and his father at Solana last year. He seemed to be a high caliber man and will be missed. My prayers go out to his family.
Wow, really sad to hear about this. - I enjoyed reading his posts. A gentlemen was he. There certainly is an empty chair at this Tradgang campfire. Gone for now but not forgotten. R.I.P.
sad to hear, RIP Chris.
I am so saddened by this news. I received a phone call from my oldest son earlier tonight and just now was able to get in front of a computer.
My son Ethan and I had the pleasure of hunting with Chris last year on Fort Benning as part of a St. Jude auction hunt provided by Gregg Dudley and Chris. We stayed in his home, he fed us, he guided us and we became friends. He spoke with great love and respect for his family - both blood & Trad Gang.
For those truly wanting to honor Chris' memory, simply serve others. He did.
My thoughts are with his family.
very sad news.prayers sent for his family.
God Bless to the family and close friends Aloha Oi,Chris and Ahuiho...( Goodbye,Until we Meet again)..Ron
It's with a very heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I've read this.
Once again, to learn how fragile life is!!!
I honestly can't remember right now if I ever had the privilege of meeting Chris or not, I believe I did years back but can't recall. However we did send pm's back and forth on here and esp during the St Judes auctions. He had a good sense of humor and was such an asset to this site. He had so much knowledge and always enjoyed sharing it with others. You knew you could trust what he told you about anything.
We will not see his like again anytime soon....
May the Good Lord give Larry, his family and his friends, the strength and grace to survive this time and the future without Chris.
Thank you to all that posted pictures, they are precious to look at. So many of my friends!!!
Tomi

It's hard to believe that someone that put his life in harms way so many times for us in the wars overseas, comes home and is taken in this way.
Just not right!!

Awful to hear! Prayers to his family

He and Larry came to Hog Heaven a couple of times- Chris was a go-getter- quiet, reserved, knew he had nothing to prove to anyone- I was looking forward to his next visit and will miss him of course!!!
Cherish every Day! Prayers to Chris' family. He is in a good place. God bless.
My condolences to the family.
Prayers and condolences from our family to the Surtees family and friends. May you know the peace and grace of God during this very difficult time.
My heart breaks when I hear news like this. It's especially tough when young children lose a parent or parents lose a child at a young age. Words can never ease the pain, but the family can be certain that God has a plan for their future. I am praying that the Surtees family will be comforted by God through this horrible tragedy and will rely on His strength to get them through.
I'm sorry to say that I did not know Chris other than through reading his posts in the past and reading through this thread.
I found an article on a local Columbus, Georgia TV Station's website and discovered that in addition to all he was to everyone here, he was a highly decorated Veteran and a true American Hero. I wish I would have gotten to shake Chris' hand.
Here's the article:

Terrible news...I had the pleasure of dealing with Chris on many occasions...he will be greatly missed in the Trad Community...
I would like to add that Chris' last post on TradGang was a topic he started in the Solana forum.
Yet again, he was offering help through a hunting tip for those that had never been.

Hi, this is Laurie from Gray Wolf Woolens sharing Bill's computer.
Chris was always challenging my sewing skills with his ideas. He was very creative and always made my job easy with alot of details.
I also like the way he would get a new camo jacket or vest, let Larry try it on, and have to order another one because he let Larry keep it. What a giving person.
I enjoyed working with him and will miss him very much.
I'm deeply sorry Surtees family.
Ernie
Prayers sent and may God lead the way through these difficult times.
My prayers go out to the Surtees family. One time I sent Chris a PM inquiring about some hog hunting. A few days later he mailed me a large map with areas highlighted and notes on where to hunt and where not to hunt. You can't find a finer gentleman than that. Chris will be missed.

How terrible. I just bought a bow from him last week. I have the bow.... I am feeling I should put that bow up for donations for his family. Someone PM me with how to do that.

Our prayers are with the Surtees Family. It's not supposed to happen like this. Great to see the Tradgang step up. No other community like this one.
Man I've been so busy lately and today was one of the first days I've been able to just chill . . . and then I see this . . .

Been watching the threads about Chris' passing and haven't really figured out what to say, until now.
First, I want to send my sincere condolences to Chris' family. May he rest in peace and his family find the strength to go on.
Second, the outpouring of generosity of the TradGang family in support of the Surtees family is amazing, my hat is off to you all.

Most sincere condolences to Chris's family, Wish you God's peace and God's speed in your time of trouble.
Prayers and condolences for Chris an his family!
I just returned from Chris' house and I want to thank everyone for their comments. Chris' Mom and Dad have read every post, as well as his military comrades.
The condolences have reached farther and deeper than you know.
Thank you all.
I certaintly did not want to see the news when I logged on, you see I havent had much time to be on here lately, and I am truly saddened by his passing, not for him but for the sadness and emptyness that is left with his family and dearest friends! For him I cant help but be happy for Chris, he is indeed in a a place that is far better than ours, he is with the Lord and has thousands of acres to roam and hunt and await his loved ones! A place that is not messed up with "trophies" and "leases" and everything else that is wrong with the world in which we live. Chris I am awaiting to share the great camp with you when it is my time, please keep the fire high partner!!!
Oh man, this is terrible news, God Bless him and his Family!!!
Prayers for Chris's family
Rest in peace our Tradgang Brother
I have not been on Pow Wow for some time. I am saddened to hear of Chris' passing. My prayers go out to the family and all of his friends.
I don't believe it is not how long we live, but how well we live that counts most. It is not hard to see that Chris lived well and had a great impact on many. My prayers go out for all his family and friends.
Regretfully I just became aware of this tragedy. Chris lived in a way that he is honored and respected by many - as his life touched many. I will continue in the long line of heartfelt condolences and prayers left here. God's peace and blessings to all the grieved.
Danny
Deepest sympathies! Will keep Chris and his loved ones in prayer!
My prayers are with his family. May we all look up and try to be the man he was. You are an insperation brother.
