Guys I have been reading a lot about wool on this forum, I have been slowly buying wool hunting gear based on the gangs recommendations. Anyways I was sitting in my favorite rocking chair with my iPad reading tradgang posts and learning as usual. Anyways it is in single digits for temp and strong winds in my corner of Michigan tonight. I found my feet were cold, turned the temp up to 68 from 66. After a hour or so my feet were still cold, I remembered the wool socks I bought for hunting this year, went and dug them out, that was 2 hours ago and my feet are nice and toasty ! Before I was wearing cotton athletic socks close to the same thickness. Guys try this little at home experiment if your still wondering if wool works !
Dan
Great. You're set for living room hunting.
But, in truth, I have wool socks inside my Chinese-copy-of-Crocs with a Woolrich shirt on at the moment. ;-)
Wool socks on in the living room here in Mississippi too.
Here in Illinois also....
And I thought wool was just for hunting ! I guess I'm slow to learn your little secret, my feet are still nice & warm ! Need to get more wool socks !
Dan
I don't care where I am. If my feet are cold, the wool goes on.
Can't beat it.
Barefoot and temp set at 69 degrees. Sitting here in just a pair of shorts. My wife on the other hand is in flannel pajamas, thick socks, covered up with a fleece blanket and drinking hot tea, and still complaining she's cold.
I have found that wool is the warmest clothing available. I have found some very soft wool at thrift stores lately, and now have a new supply to keep warm in the woods.
Grapes, it's not just for use in the woods anymore ! Works nice in the living room too ! Hmmm...... A nice woolrich shirt sounds nice and warm too, I could turn the thermostat back down ! :biglaugh:
Yes, I have a wool set of Pajamas (made by wife), go ahead and laugh.
My mother-in-law lives with us and she wears her wool also.
We keep the temp at 68, but we have a wood stove in the basement that heats up the house.
I have said it before....Wool is your friend!!
I wear wool socks every winter day...in the house!
I save money on heating too!
I wear wool socks year round. They are more comfortable in the summer too.
Come on fellows....turn that heat down a little more.... I'm sitting here in my coveralls and it's 62 in my house. It's time for the wool socks though ....my feet are cold in these cotton socks. Speaking of cold feet anyone have any recommendations for good boots to go along with wool socks? Something for when the temps are below 30 but seldom below 0.
I'm not wondering...I too wear wool socks year around! Smart Wool are my favorite and worth every penny!
As aside - Just got out of my stand tonight here in Wisconsin where it is -1 degrees w/o wind chill. I was dresssed head to toe in wool including Smart Wool Merino undewear and socks. It is the only way to dress for cold weather bowhunting IMO. Warm, dry, quiet, breathable, durable, cozy and a renewable natural resource...love it, gotta have it!

Sitting here at the appartment, 22 outside, 66 inside, have two wool throws(small blankets) on that were my grandmothers(so they are prob 50 yrs old or better) and very toasty.....wool just works!
Wool socks here too sitting around building extra flemish strings for all my bows and kids bows.
That's the best way to find out,try yourself!I love wool two.
Its hard to beet that wool
"Discovered", wool a few years back after trying all the synthetics. Always knew about it and thought it was old fashioned. Boy were we wrong ! I say that as I sit here in my $2 a pair 80% merino wool socks from the local discount store. Awful comfy ! Technology can be a good thing but most times it is awful hard to improve or beat what God made. JMHO.
Wool socks here too. Have a couple pair of the 'Smart Wool' socks that Kris mentioned - really liking them.
I gotta agree...wool socks make for great house shoes also. :D
i wear wool socks all year long.great in the summer too.no athletis feet here
When I'm at home and my feet get cold I just put them on my wife. "Shade in the summer, heat in the winter"!
you gota love wool.
Wool socks, wool longunderwear, woolrich wool shirt and 54" of snow and it's still coming down outside. It's just the middle of December!
gotta luv wool
Grapes - thats so true! I could be sitting on the couch wearing my jeans and shirt. My wife looks as though she is starring in the sequel to Nannook of the Artic! Darn chilly outside but toasty inside at 68. I paid some cash for King of the M
up here in Wisconsin we are used to the cold. But I love my wool thong ! :bigsmyl:

Yea there warm but the problem is when they get too warm and your feet sweat and then your feet freeze off.
My partner and I turned the canoe over in a lake in northern Canada just before the ice came. It took approx. one hour to get back to camp and we were surprised we were not as cold as we thought we should be. ps. Many wool layers is not good swimming gear.
The Army still uses woll socks because they are functional (Keep feet warm and minimize foot fungus issues)
At the first sign of cold feet, out come the Smart Wool socks.
