Title: Carbonwood Fans Please help ....
Post by: lt-m-grow on December 06, 2010, 07:56:00 PM
Gang, I love my blackhawk carbonwood 4000 arrows, which are no longer available and I am running low.

Which arrow is the best replacement?  I am talking overall quality, not spine etc.

I am hoping some of the carbonwood lovers have found a good replacement as I haven't.

Help...

I also shoot carbonwood 4000's and am looking at Beeman MFX Classics.
But I know nothing about them either.

I have about 7 or 8 Carbonwood 3000s left and will also be looking.

I think smallwood is right.I saw one of the big box places selling them and they said that they were making them.Try Goldtips web site.I think they have a # on there were you can find them.I shoot the Goldtip traditional blems that I buy from Big Jims and am very happy with them and his service has been great.

Gold tip did buy the vapor company. they did make vapors for a little while and decided to do away with that line. I purchased a butt load of camo vapors, but the carbon woods are gone. I do still have some of the camo vapors on hand in a .400 spine, but for the most part, they are the same as the Gold Tip shafts. I personnaly go through a bunch of shafts and sell a huge amount of shafts per year (nearly 3000 dz) and find that the Gold Tip guys are quite loyal. Not for any other reason than they are great shooters and much more affordable than most of the others.

thanks,bigjim

I have yet to find an arrow as durable as the Carbonwoods.

I shoot the 5000`s, and still have eight of the original dozen I started with nine years ago. Back when I learned that they were no longer being produced, I began buying them up at every opportunity. Mostly off of E-***. Some of them off the classifieds here on TG.

I tried the Gold Tips in 75-95, and while they are a very good arrow, they are NOT nearly as tough as the old Carbonwoods.IMHO

I have also tried the Bowhunter ICS, and the Carbon Express "Predator" series.

The Heritage, and the Traditional Only shafts I have yet to try.

I`m sure good arrows will come from them all, but you WILL miss your Carbonwoods.

That is what I feared.  Frankly I have tried some of the shafts mentioned - I didn't want to name names - and I felt the same as Bonebusters comment.

I know that there are good shafts out there.  But from a fit and finish (ie how the components fit) and durability standpoint I haven't found it.

Others?  Other ideas?

I shot the carbonwood vapor 4000 for a long time and still have a dozen or so that I deer hunt with.  I am trying to replace them with the Arrow Dynamics Hammer Head shafts.  I don't have to weigh these shafts to get a 650 grain arrow like i do the CW vapors.  Now I have broke a few of the hammer heads (hogs).  Also like the Black AD Traditional shafts.  But like you said it sure seems like those CW Vapors last and last and last!

Another fan of the carbonwood vapors.  I am pretty much keeping the ones I have left for my elk hunting arrows and have been shooting the CE Heritage for everything else.

I will tell you that in my experience, that while the others are tough, there is none tougher than a CX heritage. They are also typically heavier due to an extra wrap of carbon.

I bought a dozen Vapor carbonwood 2000 shafts from a fella here on Tradgang about a year ago.  They are .500 spine and bareshaft and shoot just like my GT 3555 Trad blems from Big Jim. I wish I could find another dozen or two myself.  I think their woodgrain finish was the best looking of any of the "wood" carbon arrows.

I've got a few dozen 4000's stashed and working. After careful consideration I have determined that they went out of production because of their toughness. It would cut down the number sold because they'd last so long.
   :D
Honest!! One tough ass arrow. I've had a few broken when critters fell on them and a couple that split a little behind the point (I repaired them and they are still in service).

Murphy's law of archery gear... always buy extra (a lot extra) of stuff you just love.

I shot them as well, now I shoot the Heritage(CE) shafts, tough and not too pricey! Shawn

I shoot the GT and like them but thought about trying the CE. I shoot wood and aluminum as well.

I agree the carbonwoods are a tough shaft.  I've been shooting the AD trads now for a couple years, with good results. Though, I took a big doe this year and she fell on the shaft and broke it into about four pieces. I was a little surprised by that.

Shot Carbonwwods for awhile but switched to Beman MFX arrows now for the last couple of years and really like them, got the same weight arrow that spined out of my bow and they shoot very well.

Great input folks, thanks.

One thing though, I did buy some CE heritage on some advice I read on here previously and didn't find them in the same category as the carbonwoods.  Hence the original question.

Just my observation but they break easier and the nock fit  - gives me fits.

I agree with shaw, Heritage are tough, I watch my brother miss a raccon target at 17yds, his Heritage 350 hit a huge rock and came almost back to our feet the insert and knock both popped out but the shaft was perfect, I couldn't believe my eyes
