Recently I purchased an old book by an Australian author named Col Allison from an online second-hand book shop. The name of the book is "The Trophy Hunters", and I received a very pleasant surprise to see that it included a chapter about and by Bob Swinehart and his Angolan rhino, taken with a Howard Hill longbow, of course (a 90lb job). It really is an interesting story, and written in a different style to the account in "Sagittarius". The photos are really nice, too. The book cost me about $7 plus shipping. I just thought some of you blokes'd be interested in tracking down a copy for yourselves. Cheers!
Mate thats the book that started it all for me many years ago . I sit at my computer and can see my signed copy from Col in the book shelf . I re read that story a million times and the photo's still resonate to this day ...
"Arrows for a Battlewagon" ... couldn't be more apt eh !
Thanks for posting this up ...
Nice find Ben,
Ben and Ben,
Is the book all about bowhunting, or is it about both rifle and bow hunting?
Thanks for the recommendation. I just ordered a copy listed as 'like new' for $9. Looking forward to reading it.
Quid pro quo, I'd recommend "The Heart of the Hunter" by Edison Marshall (big game hunting, but not with bow) ... and anything by Gordon MacQuarrie if you like stories of duck hunting and fly fishing.
Best.
Rik, it is a rifleman's book, really, aside from that one story about / by Bob. I got quite a surprise to see it in there. It's published in 1979.
Thanks I just got a copy for $9 too.
This is so wierd but my neighbor and I were talking about bowhunting and he tells me he was friends with a guy that also shot a longbow, Bob Swinehart. He says this guy shot Rhinos and Lions and all kinds of exotic animals. He is going to find some books he wrote for me. So this two times in one day I hear this name. Look forward to reading about him.
