Need a recommendation for a good hiking boot
Irish Setter Elk boots, Danner Pronghorns are my second choice.
meindl perfekt hikers
2 for meindl... mine are the 10" ones. Walked about 150 miles in Colorado last September in them. Comfortable, waterproof and warm.
I wear merrel when the weather is good to me. Danners when the weather is not.
You cannot go wrong with the meindl line either. Those are awesome boots.
I have tried lots. My fav is Asolo TP 535-all leather and non Gore Tex. They are pretty water proof and breathe very well.
Most important thing is that they FIT! Try lots, find the one that fits best and break it in well before hunting. Some guys hunt in Converse Chuck Taylors, some in custom high dollar handmade boots. Your best choice will depend on what kind of hunting you're planning as well, you'll likely choose a different boot for a hike in, live out of your backpack hunt, than a drive in, sleep in a cabin or RV or horseback hunt. I'd suggest that if you are planning on carrying the meat out on your back, get a boot with plenty of ankle support and good traction, such as the Meindl's, Lowa Sheephunter or Tibet, Asolo Sassalong, or Han Wag's. If someone else or a horse is carrying the load, a light day hiker would suit well, something like a Merrell, Vasque, or Lowa, the Danner Pronghorn has a good following as well.
Ive been having good luck with Georgia loggers w/200 gram thinsulate. They seem to fit me the best and have been holding up very well or as well as Danners that I have had that cost me $100 more. Those Meindls are awesome though and you could wear a pair of those things forever.Spendy, but elk hunting you must have something that you can climb in as well as go down hill steep, and that are comfortable, day after day.Hard to beat a good ol pair of Red Wings too.Good Luck
White's Smoke Jumper boots.
I have worn the Cabela's Outfitters for several trips to hunt in Colorado. They are not the lightest boot out there, but they are very well built and provide great ankle support. I have the 12" and the 9" and have worn both elk hunting. Whatever boot you decide on make sure to get quality socks, for me a high percentage marino wool. A great boot is nothing without good socks. I like the Danner Elk Hunters from Cabelas.
It depends on where your going to hunt and when. Some guys hunt in sneakers and others like me hunt in high top elk hunter boots.
The best I've ever had are the Cabela's Elk hunter 10" with insulation and GoreTex. Great for all conditions and very good in steep country with a load on your back.

Thanks for the responses guys
Vasque makes some very good/long lasting boots. I've used them for several years now.
I would encourage you to find a store that carries Asolo and see how they fit for you. I have always struggled to find good fitting boots but the Asolo 520 fit me like a glove.
I bought a pair of Danner pronghorn 400grams for my trip last fall. Very comfortable right out of the box.
i go to big5 and buy the police/swat issue black boots, light and very durable.have had the pricey boots but i prefer the black ones at big5.i get the ones that have the zipper on the side as well as laces.
