Who wears plaid insead of modern camo patterns????
i do, half the price and works just as well.
Me!
For me the choice is to not wear any camo of any type any time I am in the field.
BUT to each his own.
Sometimes, just traded a great shirt jac from ADKKEN, Green, gray, and, black plaid really blends in in the hemlocks....
Hi guys :wavey:
I wear camo usually but not always.
My warmer weather (early season) tends to be more camoish and my late season stuff isn't. I've killed deer with and without the camo - don't think it really matters much or at all, to be honest.
Was wearing this (more or less - hood rather than hat and Main Hunting Shoe rather than LaCross but whatever) Friday when I killed a nice big fatty doe. Didn't have a stitch of visible camo.
I do have some camo, but it's not my first choice.
My favorite warm season is a plaid shirt with camo pants (only because I haven't gotten the pants I really, really like in a solid yet!)
When it gets cold, it's back to camo as all the coats are that way.
Plaid cotton shirt for warm weather, and wool solid and plaid for cold weather.
Early season pants are carhartt lt. brown and then wool for late/cold weather.
I hope I have stopped growing side ways so I will not have to do any new wardrobe upgrades.
Looks like I will be giving it a try the rest of the season. Just bought a red/black plaid wool coat yesterday. :saywhat:
I wear plaid many times, but just recently bought an ASAT wool camo outfit. Like to wear the camo pants and plaid though. I get close to deer and they don't seem to mind!! It's when I fire little missles at them that they seem to mind the most!! lol :biglaugh:
I end up mixing and matching both...alot of times plaid tops and camo bottoms.
I totaly gave up carbon clothing, but Im not totaly giving up camo!
Mr. 3Feathers,
Have not worn camo in almost 20 years. Plaids and/or solids are serving us well; be it Moose, Caribou, Grizz or Grouse we are after. Same for Black Bear, Wolf, Coyote and Snowshoe Hare.
Best Wishes
Filson, Pendleton, Woolrich, Main Guide (LLBean) are just a few I prefer over camo.
wear both...don't understand the guys who shun camo... I like the trad plaid look somtimes...sometimes wear a ghillie or camo..what is the stigma...never understood ....
I'm sold to wool and it seems like the top notch quality wool clothing is found in camo only.(Don't know about Asbel an LaClair). But I love the trad plaid,it just fit pefecly with trad bowhunting.
I dont quite get the anti camo thing either. Well maybe...I guess its like someone who chooses a selfbow over a laminated bow...or a recurve over a longbow? Or a baseball cap over a boonie.... Just a personal preference?
I like camo, I don't think it works any better than a good plaid, but I like it.
When its cold I usually have on some type of wool plaid, just because its a lot more available at better prices than wool camo of the same quality.
But if the cost was the same I'd have the wool camo, because I love the look of it.
Those Asbell pullovers are looking pretty darn good though!!!
I personally think that most not all bust most camo makes you look like a black blob at distances past 40 yards or so. Like I said most but not all.

I should add....I'm talking about deer hunting. When turkey hunting I pay close attention to my camoflauge.
When deer hunting I practice good camoflauge techniques, but I'm not concerned about a pattern.
trubltrubl - no stigma against it for me, I just don't get hung up on the hype of it all. I actually got a call once from a guy who was frustrated that he had to stop at the store on the way to his evening sit....it seems he couldn't find his matching camo gloves, he only had a pair of brown jersey gloves......" I sure hope Walmart has the right pattern....." I hung up laughing.
Its not an "Anti-Camo" thing. (though after wearing it daily for 20 yrs the novelty has worn off) Its more for nostalgia and the reason I shoot trad in the first place. That older, simpler ways still work just as well as the new mordern ways. That I like things a little more challenging, its one thing to reach out with your bow and touch a wild deer in a gillie suit and quite another feeling to do so in an Emer Fudd plaid coat and malone bibs. I have both in wool and mix and match all the time.
I like wool. My daughter works at pendelton.
I've got lots of camo. Wear it hunting all the time. But I like wool in the winter, and I'm no more likely to drop $500 on a jacket or $740 on a wool parka from Sleeping Indian than I am to buy a Lamborgini to drive to work. There is certainly cheaper wool; I sure like my Columbia bibs. But how can you beat Teresa Asbell's plaid wool Mackinaw at $76 on top of a polarfleece or $5 thrift store wool shirt liner? And it is two piece so it is easy to layer or adjust for temp.
Plus, you don't look like a Posse Comitatus militia member wearing it into town.
I didn't mean to sound like I'm camo bashing either. I wear it sometimes too. I just love wool and prefer it. It's warmer for ME in the cold. Wool camo and plaid. The plaid I wear is more economical and better quality than the camo I can afford.
Keeping the Faith!

I'm 56 and going on 57. I fear plaid would make me look 57 going on 58. My 7-year old, 48" tall grandson already says, as he looks up at me, that he's taller and faster than I am.
Gotta love those little ones! My youngest son LOVES camo. If I'm not wearing it, in his opinion, I'm not doing it right.
That funny YORNOC. My girlfriends 9yr old boy says his favorite color is camo.
Keeping the Faith!

Whatever I can find at the right price..... Hunt with the wind, hold still, wash with no UV brightener detergent and pattrern becomes irrevelent.
I don't bash camo. I wear mismatched camo in the warm weather and mix and match wool plaid coat and camo pants and hat in winter. Nothing, I mean nothing, matches in my outfits. I even wear mismatched gloves for right and left hand, one camo with rubber nubs for bow hand and one brown cotton with shooting fingers cut out on string hand.
Here's my winter outfit.

In my case it IS an anti-camo thing and has absolutely nothing to do with price.
I am not in the military and I don't want to look like something I am not when / if I stop somewhere on the way home.
Lots of different opinions out there and that is mine and I make no apologies.
John, you look nice on your plaid when you have your Bear TD in your hands.LOL:
A little camo but getting rid of it
I envy the quotes of "early season is cotton plaid". In Texas early season can be near 100 degrees. I can't tell you how many sits were in boxers and a t-shirt.
I've worn wool and plaids most of my life,If it isn't broke don't fix it.So warm and quiet.
I really like my Sitka camo clothes, but more for the function of the clothing than the camo pattern. There is a certain romance in the old plaids and I've killed more than a couple deer wearing old school plaid.

This picture is one of my favorites and you can't believe how many comments (most of them negative) it got me from guys who saw it. I just laughed. Notice how while the Advantage pants (actually bibs) match the forest floor pretty well, the coat would be VERY close to the bark on this tree. By the way, it is the same pattern as one of Rob Tiberio's Classic Bowman patterns.
Also, FWIW, right now my local Wal-Mart has tons of shirt-jacs on sale, several of which would be quite functional as bowhunting garb. Faded Glory is one brand. Cheap, warm, soft, quiet...if that's your style, better go check 'em out.
Plaid is camo, so I too have difficultly understanding the question.
I almost exclusivley wear it now, except for my ghillie suit on occasion, i am begining to think that camo is for humans, as i have had a ton of deer ALL OVER me and pay no mind. Most of my stuff is Red too!
I wear plaid wool, it is better at fooling deer than any bought pattern.

I just resurected my heavy Red and Black Woolich jacket, I also have the matching pant! I am 54 years old and had had this coat since 1977 we sold these in our family store! I only wish I would have gotten he Green and Black plaid one too!
Michigan deer have learned to watch out for people wearing camo.
Non camo clothing might be considered an unfair advantage. :D
I've been searching several years now for a drabby plaid/greens and tans mixed with browns mid winter jacket with wool and a liner in it....Two weeks ago I found one on a non sponser site that listed for $169.00 and It was my size 2XL and the price dropped to $99.95 and if my order was over $100.00 they would take an additional 20% off that price...I checked the site and found a pack of them instant hand/boot warmers for .75 cents and that made the $100.00 mark...I got the coat for $79.96 and had to pay shipping etc.Total cost with that $91.66...The coat was a Woolrich Stag Jacket with liner and I tried it on and looks great...Can't wear it till after Christmas is the only problem...Sometimes it pays to be patient and search for a good price...The reason I bought new was in our area of Maryland the thrift stores and second hand shops hardly ever have wool and is they do it's gone before they tag it...Oh and by the way this company only had this one olive drab jacket ..Here lately I just prefer the Plaid over camo and like to hunt late season and the Wool will keep me in the woods longer :D
Usually when my instinct tells me to keep my yap shut I do... just not this time.
:D
The original question was who wears plaid not which is best.
I notice a couple of response from guys who don't kill much of anything touting plaid.... hmmmm!
Also notice that none of the camophobes are using white clothes in early season or black on snow.
Now here's an opinion for all of you. Camo is a technique not a product.
If you change out of your plaids at the end of the hunt then you must have bought them for camo purposes. I guess that makes them camo. Hmmmmm!
I have a brown/rust and gray wool plaid jacket, and wouldn't trade it for the best jacket on the market today. It goes on all my hunts in cold weather, and on nicer days, I have the same color pattern in shirts. Salvation Army stores are a huge hit for these types of clothes. That is if you are, as I call it, "Money Concious". My buddies say I'm cheaper than American money.
I just use whatever I can find the cheapest. That is usually goodwill wool and army surplus camo. HA! Jason
So just wondering if jcar315 has an opinion on this issue?
:biglaugh:
Camo is all technique. I love it. My mother is an awesome seamstress and all my "new" stuff is plaid. So much cooler IMO. Now friends really think I'm a freak. A Longbow and plaid, geez.......
Odd, for yrs my preference has been for camo clothing and non camo bows (even wheelies).
Liked the old Hoyt Safari colored compounds (bronze riser w black limbs).
My current bow has black limbs, but they had some shine to them.Rather than scratch them up a bit to dull them I just blasted them with some spraypaint. Only did fwd facing slide, left the other black.
Got a PSe Coyote, hated that camo, did an el cheapo spay bomb camo job in grey on it.
My new limbs for my ILF will be black, dunno how long they'll stay that way.
Clothing? I hope to afford some good wool, in camo :)
I don't wear commercial camo at all ... except on my Cat quiver and Arrowmaster. I don't begrudge any one wearing it and I don't think its a fashion statement either one way or the other . Here in Australia hunting has become relatively uncommon and if on crown land there is chance of meeting other people / non hunters I'd prefer that I did so in what would be considered neutral clothing ... ditto landowners whilst on private property. They usually think I'm odd for running round like Robin Hood anyway.
But as Charlie suggested camo is a technique rather than a piece of equipment . I must stress however that I dress in accordance with my surrounds ... neutral muted tones that will blend and break with the country I'm hunting. so in effect I "camo" myself just not in a commercial way.
Thank you Charlie :notworthy:
Charlie,
You pointed out something that makes a lot of sence...We all still try to blend in our surroundings so yes it is considered camo somehow...I was personally just trying to find something with wool and the colors in that jacket that I got has those colors that blended well with my modern camo clothing...Looking back to my responce on the subject and wondered why I went so far in detail about the jacket I found...Sorry guys I was just excited about it...Now I can wear my camo bibbs with the plaid top..Now I'm a mixed breed so call me a Mutt! :D
I'd love to be fashionable and get some of the hottest new plaid patterns and colors, but I'll have to stick with this old ASAT leafy suit to break up my outline! :D
I'll use whatever keeps me warm and breaks up my outline the best.
My biggest complaint with some(most of the camo out on the market) is the patterns are too small.
I look enough like a blob as it is and don't need to spend big bucks to enhance that look.
There are a couple of commercial products I'd like to try but they tend to be a bit pricey for my budget.
God bless,Mudd
Light weight camo earlier, but can't wait for late season so I can bring out my Filson, Johnson Woolen Mills and the wool top I got from Theresa Asbell.
Dave
I'm certainly not against plaids or any other "camo" type clothing. I've worn my share and it works fine.
These days I wear what conditions warrant and I have plenty of "commercial camo" in my closet and it's what I go to most often.
Here's a couple of old pics.
I even stalked and shot a nice black bear wearing jeans and a tan work shirt.
I've even been working on my own design camo which seems to work great.

Charlie if you market that put me down for a set :archer:
James... will do. Have been having trouble getting it to market. I know that stuff is in the house somewhere... I just can't find it right now.
:D
Charlie,
I like the plaid top in that first pic...Can you remember that farrr back what make that was? :p
I wear camo bibs (cuz it gets cold) with a brown/black plaid shirt (Merino wool long johns). If it's warmer, I wear grey or olive colored pants. I do wear a camo face cover on the ground though.
Keefer... not sure of the brand. I got that from the old Kittredge Bow Hut. They sold it as their "Bowhunter Camo Jacket". I think it may be Woolrich.
That jacket still lives... Terry Green has it. I outgrew it years ago.
It was a great jacket with pockets under the yoke and low on the sides.
I too enjoy plaids when they match where I am hunting. I will also wear camo if it gives me the advantage...Ryan
I read somwhere that wool doesnt' reflect light it absorbs it. That in itself is enough to sell me. I love wool, I'm fascinated by it and after all the man made commercial stuff, God still makes the best camo out there. Although if Charlie ever markets his camo (after he finds it) I'd probably buy some! HA! Jason
(http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx73/buckeyebowhunter/PIC_0500-1.jpg)
Here is me in October, I wore this because it is a little lighter than my cabelas outfitter jacket, I dont mind the plaid but I like my cabelas outfitter pattern, and my wool camo patterns a little better, in this picture i have a sleeping indian hat on i would like to have a full set of this but its so expensive!
I mix and match, some camo some not. I'm liking my vintage wool plaids more all the time and when my camo stuff is gone it's gone. The Pendleton wool jacket in the pic's is older than me. It kept me warm today and I think the plaid stuff blends in as well as camo most times.
My wife snapped this pic as I was heading out today.
when I come home from a hunt my wife says "I hear you but I can't see you" so what ever I'm wearin must work
Charlie,
I'm suprized it isn't in an antique shop somewhere...Sure like the looks of that one and the one I got looks a lot like it with a double yoke(thought that was only in eggs)and nice low pockets as well... :biglaugh:
I want to be free to choose whatever I like that day,it can be camo, usually ASAT,Predator or KOM,or plaid or solid earth tones.Ron La Clair is right when he says never seen a plaid tree but lot of grey yes.
I have lots of both and wear lots of both as the seasons and temperture change.I find myself wearing more wool as it makes me feel more apart of nature rather than an intruder.I really like all the qualitys and the afordability it offers.
RLA I think that picture taken by your wife speaks volumes. I'd say she has the hots for you!...lol I bet she was thinking of how good her hubby looked.
Good wife!!
When I was a youngster(back a couple of years ago) I hated to wear anything wool. I didn't like to have to use the wool blanket on our bed.
But the older I get the more I love the stuff.
Charlie I was wondering?? so what does it mean when I wear my plaids to the woods but don't change out of them when I get home?
Something I do have to admit to is I don't like it when folks(anybody) can tell I'm going to or coming from hunting. Why? I have been followed and I don't like it.
Another reason is the non-hunting public in general. I'm always a little turned off myself when I run into someone fully camo'ed out in Wally world.(maybe it's just me being quirky)
BTW I loved plaids, they show off just how in shape I am(round is still a shape right?)...lol
God bless,Mudd
My Buddy Felix says it all,if you don't like what I'm wearing to heck with ya!LOL.I love it!
I like wool plaid, and I like camo, depending on what I am doing.
I don't recall my uncles or grandpa using camo at all.
Deer don't know the difference, if you practice sound hunting practices, and don't smell bad.
I love wool, solids and plaids. It just feels right.
I like the plaids and I have camo. It depends on the temperature and whatever strikes me that day. My hunting buddies call this my "60's Field & Stream" look.
I had some really good stuff but some young Brittish kid with round glasses took it. I tried to get it back but he keeps wearing it and I can't find him.

Then it would be black or invisible. We see things as a certain color because they have absorbed the other wavelengths of visible light. Black is the color of things that do not emit or reflect any lightwave of visible spectrum. White means it doesn't absorb any or emits them all.
And that's today's lesson, kiddies!
D&DH had an article on what Deer saw as in the spectrum of colors , I believe based on the way their eyes were made up . The conclusion was that Deer could only see shades of blues and yellows and everything else was similar to black and white contrasts .
stumpkiller, i believe covey is correct....not visible light spectrum but the reflectivety of the fabric....ie. camo colored aluminum foil clothing would reflect where wool fabric "absorbs" rather than reflects because of the many fibers....just like hair of deer etc.
I wear both! Usually a plaid shirt with a camo vest over it and camo pants!

Sounds better the way you put it  . I think it was G. Fred Asbell that had an artical in TBM about wool. Fred's been wearing wool longer than I've been alive, if it works for him it works for me! Jason
You mean it's dull and not shiney. ;-)
