Title: Selling & Trading Remorse
Post by: Bowwild on December 02, 2010, 10:15:00 AM
I just made my first transaction with a Trad Ganger this week.  The fellow was great, communication terrific, and his bow (Checkmate) arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I have zero complaints.

Even though the bow I traded was one I don't think I would have hunted with, because I have others I prefer, I miss it. I bought the bow new (Fox High Sierra)and now it is on someone else's bow rack.

Sheesh!

LOL, Bowwild, I just sent an e-mail yesterday to a friend to whom I sold a bow back in the spring asking if he is using it.....if not, could I please buy it back?  I know the feeling. However I have sold a number of bows over the years and traded several as well, I sometimes find myself thinking "Why in the world did I do that?"  Sometimes they find their way back home...other times not.  Maybe I'm just finished selling bows off my rack.

If it helps maybe the other member is feeling the same way. We all yearn for the things we don't have, and then want what we had when we get it. Why do we do it? Because somewhere inside we just have to know what makes that next one special.

Bowwild,
You know the old saying if you let I go and it comes back.
And when you are down thinking of the trad just pick up the new bow and shoot her a bit I bet your mind will clear and you will feel better.

I've had a couple guys call me back and want their old bow back.  I have felt their pain before so I sold it back to them every time.  Heck, they were so happy they added a little extra boot money, not a bad deal.

Roy,this is the reason I have 90 bows.I don't like to sell them, the few I did where never shot and I still remember them, but if I sell something it is because I have other 3 of the same bowyer. At least.LOL.

You guys are great (except for BWD --I'm kidding BW). My lovely wife simply rolls her eyes at my "plight" --(I realize on a scale of 1-10 on the problems of humankind this one is about a negative 1,000).

If you see the classifieds you'll see I'm attempting to add insult to this injury in search of a LH Sivertip.

Been there, done that!

sniff, sniff....

Then I console myself by thinking of all the wonderful bows that are still out there that I've never gotten to put an arrow through.

But if I'm a good lad and play my cards right, it could happen.

My name is Mudd and yes I am a helpless "Bowaholic"!!!!

God bless,Mudd

I have had a few.The most recent was a bow I built for LBOW.It was the most beautiful cocobollo I have ever had my grubby little hands on.I still regret selling that piece of wood.Although the bow did turn out every bit as gorgous as Mike and I had hoped.I did make it perfectly clear that if he ever decided to sell  that bow I would appreciate the first chance to buy it back.

The best shooting bow and your most favorite bow is often the one you "use to have".
But in reality, it was never that good, that is why you traded or sold it.

Wow, I'm sure setting myself up for a huge pile of "I told you so's!"

If my kids had been this impatient....surely there's an old episode of Andy Griffith that helps with this?

Oh get over it! They're only bows.....haha (what am I saying?)    :saywhat:
What I've found as a cure to this is buying many more bows. That way as you buy and sell them you won't grow too attached to them. Even though I do now have a core of bows that will remain with me for as long as I can shoot them.

I gave my first bow, a Bear Montana at 45# to my neighbors boy when I ordered a Mohawk. Also picked up a Voodoo Whisperstik a few weeks back. Problem is, everytime I shoot the Montana I want it back!

Sooo... I just bought another Montana at 55# to ease my pain!

You haven't gotten the full potential out of your Blacktail. Blacktails love stiff heavy arrows. Shoot a few 12-13 GPP (grains per pound) arrows out of her instead of those light 9.65 GPP (grains per pound) soda straws you're now shooting and you might get a very nice surprise which will convince you to rescind your decision to trade.

The one bow that will never leave to another home until I kick the biscuit is my Osage self bow, put too much work and sweat into that bow to let it go. I have others that have special meaning to me because they were gifts but most of my bows are just bows.

about 5/6  years ago I traded off a 58" Mosshorn that I still regret to this day.  anyway' 2/3 years back I tracked it down and come to find out vermonster ended up with it and sent it to a reservation in northern Canada for the local kids to shoot. knowing I can never have it again I am VERY glad it ended up where it did.
bet those kids shoot it better than I did anyway. LOL

I've got a couple Mosshorns, among some others, that I consider selling once in awhile. Then while inspecting them so I can give a good description of them for the classifieds, I change my mind. It's hard to let any go, and I regret every one I ever sold. It's a sickness for sure. Lol! When I do let one go it's almost always because of a temporary financial need.

I have sold one bow - it was gone for almost ten yrs - and I never knew it was actually in the district I work for and in the hands of a friend I had not seen for yrs - though I knew he lived in the district. I was able to learn of this bow being in his hands and get in touch with him. He sold it back to me!!!!!!!!

Makes me feel good to have it back!

From these posts if I'm weird'n out a little bit it appears I'm in good company.  The bow is history now and has found a more home where it will be used. I have some distractions coming early next week.

You know the odd thing is my wife knows me better than I do.  She always tells me, whether gun or bow, not to sell or trade em. She doesn't give a hoot for any of them but she knows I do. Reckon I should listen to her more often?

I sold a bow and the gentlemen wasnt happy with the condition and we worked out an alternative. I got the bow back, sent it to the bowyer and he made her like new for free, and sent her back to me in no time. Now, I have back my first custom that took my first trad deer. I was feeling bad that I sold her in the first place, now she's home for good.

No, not really,....  The 4 I have now were weeded out of about two dozen that for one reason or another didnt stick. I still try new bows but just dont find any that really shoot better than the ones I've kept. They may be prettier wood but not better shooters......

I have sold two bows people here on Trad Gang. Both of these bows I would never want back. The first bow was a recurve bow which gave me a case of finger pinch and the second bow was a longbow that I could never put the first arrow shot of the day where I was aiming it.

Well, the way I look at it, selling one just gives me the opportunity to buy another that I might like better (for a while at least).

When I was 24 Yrs old,I borrowed a bow (longbow) With arrows and broadheads ,And practice a lot of course ,I went deer hunting for the first time 1974 and got a deer with that bow,But I gave the bow back to the man that borrowed it for to me "Big Red"

I have to say that he is the one that started my hunting adventures ,I regretted I never Purchased that bow from him ,But I just recently talked to his son ,"Big Red" let me use his bow over 36 years ago, He ("Big Red")now has Alzheimer's now he doesn't even know what a bow is or his son's name.
I recently purchased a bow that Chad Holm made, It has red in the riser and limb tips so I named it "Big Red" and told his Son Thanks for having a great Dad I never got to have.

You never know who is going to influence you. "Big Red"  gave me an adventure for a lifetime .

Influence one you can ,It will make a difference in both of you.

Roy, I have devastated myself so many times I cant even count them. I sold several Silvertips that had sentimental meaning....I refinish collectible recurves from the 60's and early 70's and had in my hands some of the most rare recurves on this planet. Sold 'em all. I even had the serial "# 10" Schafer Silvertip  made by Paul Schafer for Paul Brunner. I gave it to Dave Windauer years ago because I knew Paul's death hit him hard. But it worked out incredible. A woman I know ..her husband was dying and they were down to nothing. I put the word out and Dave and Beth auctioned off the bow and gave the cash to my friend!!! Awesome people!
Had many a custom bow made, and they are gone. I've kicked myself for way too long. The world is constantly changing. Great bucks come and go to be replaced by new. Bows, and bow hunters are the same. Don't sweat it, remember them well and keep moving forward.

Never sell or get rid of Bows, Guns, Dogs or Wives.  You'll always have to re-buy and the next one will cost you more.
