As dawn broke this morning I was in a ladder stand I'd set up for Dad just a short distance from my parents house.
It's rifle season here, so by Mom and Dads house is one of only two places I feel "safe" hunting. Some here know my backround with bowhunting during gun season. Not good :scared: As a matter of fact, last fall was the very first time I'd gone out during gun season since 2003.
Before it was even light enough to see, I could hear deer in the distance...sounding like they were coming closer...but also some running. So I thought perhaps a buck was around.
Then finally, when it was barely light enough to see...behind me, about 50 yds. away I saw two does trot by and disappear to the south of me. I could hear other deer, but never did see them.
About 15 minutes or so later, just after a text to Terry Receveur...I heard something behind me again, but this time over my right shoulder.
I turned and saw a doe, about 40 yds. away, but walking closer. Then another and another....
There were at least 4, and more were coming as the lead doe was walking by at about 25-30yds.
Now normally, I wouldn't think twice about shooting this doe, but just as she was right where I could have shot her....I looked back and saw a buck. Not a big one, but it was a buck!
For the last four years, I've only shot does, passing up too many small bucks to remember....waiting for the "big guys".
Heck I've even shot does right out from in front of bucks that were hot on their trail. It's been a long time since I even considered shooting a buck this size.
But as soon as I saw him, for whatever reason, I just "knew"...today it was time to kill a buck.
The lead doe looked right at me, I thought for a minute the jig was up. But holding as still as humanly possible, I passed her test after about 30 seconds.
I really don't know haw many does and fawns there was....probably 6-7. The buck was hanging back about 20yds. behind the last doe, so as she passed my last opportunity to shoot her, I hoped I hadn't made a mistake holding out for this buck. But he was following the exact way these does had come in....oh boy!
This was not going to be what has come to be my average shot of about 5-15yds....this was a bit of a "poke"...
I normally don't like to stop deer if they're real close, but he wasn't. So as he worked his way thru the brial thicket and into the only spot I could shoot, I mouth grunted...nothing, then a little louder as he took a couple more steps and quartered slightly away...still nothing...
Then I just about yelled at him as I started to draw ...he locked up and the arrow was gone...
Like I said earlier, my shots are usually very close....but this one was different....I actually remember seeing it arch, seemingly in slow motion...and as best as I could tell dissappeared right where I was looking!
He turned away and crashed up the hill away from me heading for an old overgrown orchard...after about 30yds he was swallowed up by the brush and it sounded like he stopped just after going out of sight.
I stood as still as possible and just listened....

Great experience. Congratulations

Awesome! Thank you for texting me the picture and sharing the story with me...The guys on "TG" are gonna love it
Love ya brother,

Curt, you are a master story teller. Thank you very much for sharing it with us. I know the outcome, but can't wait for the rest of the story.
It takes a lot of courage for you to be out bowhunting during gun season. My hat is off to you my friend.
-
Awesome. Hope you have pics.
Then again I think you will.
Congratulations Curt! :readit:

This is going to be a good one!! :bigsmyl:

....After about 5-10 seconds of silence....I heard what sounded like crashing....Or at least that's what I hoped I'd heard...But since I couldn't see anything...well.... you know how, even though everything looks and sounds like everything was perfect...when you don't actually see an animal go down, there's always some doubt....
But I was almost 100% positve he was down, just out of sight up the hill from me in the old orchard...
Then it hit me....it was 7 years to the day that I'd had that reckless hunters bullet rip though my leg....and it hit me hard, for whatever reason, very hard...I'll leave it at that...
This would also be the first deer I'd ever killed while bowhunting during our rifle season.
Dad was the first I called...then I called home. I wanted Cade to track this one. It had been 4 yrs. since he had the opportunity to track one of my deer(usually I'm not so close to home).

After a half hour or so, I got down. I was only going to check the arrow, then get out and get Cade and return with him and Dad. The arrow had zipped tight thru and was stuck in the ground....It looked real good...

Sorry for the delay, photobucket doesn't seem to want to let me copy my vids, so to upload to you tube. I have another I'll upload now...
Here's the first of two. This was not an easy track job, briars, weeds, dirt...hardly any leaves to "display" the blood...

Come on Curt, I can't wait to hear and see this one!

This is a special one!! Can't wait to hear the rest. Curt, very happy for you and your family. Congrats Joe
-
I think this is great that you're documenting all this on tape for the family and the future. Good job buddy! BW
-
Thanx guys...PB usually is fine for me....
Any way here's the other video...
The end of this one pretty much sums this morning up for me...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pl1SKz9TMY
Cade did a great job under tuff tracking conditions...
The shot was in fact just as I saw it, and right where it needed to be. When I showed dad where the deer was standing when I shot I asked him how far he thought the shot was...
I had figured about 25yds....he thought more like 30...because of the brush and briars, I never paced it off. All I know is that it was much further than what I usually shoot, but I never, ever think distance when I shoot....I just know...

We got the deer tagged and hung in Dads barn, then went inside to share it all with my Mom who had breakfast started for us.
Like the title says...tuff to put into words what this one means to me...what this day signifies, and who I shared it with...I'm at a loss....

Thank you fellas...still feeling very "satisfied" about yesterday. In fact I'm not even hunting this morning, choosing to instead catch up on some things around the house I need to do.
For those that know me, with my limited hunting time, me giving up a morning hunt doesn't happen too often...
A little about the arrow I shot the buck with....it was once again "arrow #4"...#3 for #4 The same arrow I shot a doe with on Halloween, then another doe on the 13th...now this buck....
Check out those frosty leaves, it was about 20 degrees yesterday morning...
It is a CX 60-75 with the graphix stripped off, has a "Onestringer" wrap, a regular insert, and 3 five inch feathers burned to a custom shape. It's tipped with a big 160 Snuffer that's mounted on a 125 gr. steel adapter. All total it weighs right about 630 grs....if I remember right...
It has been thru all three deer, first doe it barely hung up by the fletch but fell to the ground after 5yds. or so. The second doe, and this buck required me to pull it out of the ground to get it back in my quiver.
First two does both only went about 30yds, and this buck made it a little further....maybe 50yds.
It has been responsible for putting more blood on the ground than any arrow I've ever used. I've never had an arrow used more than twice...
This arrow has some serious "mojo"...
It's cleaned up, sharpened up, and ready to go, but I'm not sure I'll get a chance to use it again.
I have Miss Faith scheduled to arrive soon for the month of Dec., and I'll be taking my other lighter KS to Texas at the end of Dec. to hunt Solana again with a bunch of TGer's over New Years.
So maybe it's time for retirement....
-
Great Story Curt!
My opinion....don't retire the arrow. I have one that's been through two turkeys and one deer. It's in the quiver ready to go.

Way to go Curt! You're right, they don't always have to be big to be special. Very cool story and I like the way you get the family involved. I do the same thing when I or one of my kids harvest a deer close to home. I go home and get everyone and bring them out to the woods and tell them the story and then go to the deer and take pictures before we field dress the animal. It always makes for good memories that way.
Congrats!
-
Good stuff Curt, well done.
-
awesome story curt! i understand your apprehension to not take any deer during gun season, and i must say an outstanding ending to confronting your fear  much respect to you sir. ruddy
-
I kinda read between the lines Curt... You ARE a human being and loved by family and friends... The "trophy" here is Gods grace and a bunch of venison cutlets. Wonderful Day Afield! You found the words just fine.

Congrats on a "satisfying" hunt and thanks for sharing the story! I can empathize with the lack of hunting time due to work schedule... sometimes I just have to live vicariously through these hunting stories! You are blessed to have those good relationships with dad and son - I didn't have it with my dad but I'm trying to make up for it with my son.
-
Full circle Curt.......as I said yesterday good things happen to good people....
I loved watching Cade..."I feel like we're within 20 yards of that deer".....you've done well with him my friend, a testament to both you and your dad.

Nice job Curt, loved the video! What a great way to spend holiday weekend!

Curt:
That is the most amazing display of Family I have seen in some time.
I appreciate your apprehension on this hunt as I experienced similar feelings after "the stabbing". I shivered hard every time I took a broad head tipped arrow out of the quiver and when I killed the first deer after that I shook so bad I could not stand up. It passes and this passage was about the best there could have been.
You are the man…. Fathers, and sons!
-
Congratulations Curt. I am happy for you to be able to share it with your family. I hope to have the same satisfaction some day.
Thank you for taking us along also. :)

some great memories for all of you! congrats!
-
That was awesome Curt. The pictures and videos will be great treasures for the rest of your life.
I use to take my boys bow hunting with me when they were about Cades age. They're 49 and 51 years old now and they still talk about those early years hunting with dad.
One hunt in particular I had put the boys in two separate ground blinds away from me but still within sight. A big doe came by me and I put a big Pearson Deadhead through her. She ran right towards my 8 year sons blind and piled up 10 yards from him. He popped up out of his blind and his eyes were as big a tea cups. He came running towards me yelling, "you got him Dad!"
They didn't have video cameras back then in the 60's, what I wouldn't give to have that on DVD today... :archer:
-
Congrats! Thanks for taking us along.

Great family story Curt. Congrats!!
