I was just curious as to how far ya'll drive to get to your hunting area? I was spoiled when I was a kid had a few hundred acres behind my house to rome around in, now I have to drive to hunt and it somtimes takes the fun out of it for me. Some of you guy's probably drive alot farther than I do, so maybe this will make me feel a little better! Jason
-
I can walk 50 yards from my backdoor, but sometimes drive 4 hours to get to some awesome public land hunting. When I drive that far i usually hunt for a week, thats whats best about it.
-
If I hunt in the afternoon after work, I can drive about 3 miles to a small wood lot I have permission to hunt. Or I can drive about 5 miles south to a lousy wood lot that my Mom owns! On week-ends I head for the Adirondack Mts, about a 2-1/2 hour drive. I used to walk across the street to a nice thick river bottom, but the beavers have it flooded. I will canoe across it next year.
-
When I was growing up we lived on a large, commercial farm. Hunting was just a matter of walking a short distance to the woods, it was a great place to grow up.
Now I live in town but I'm fortunate to have three Mo Conservation Dept. areas all within about 10 minutes of my house that are well populated with deer and turkey.
Sorry, that probably didn't make you feel any better :(
-
drive about 35-40mins.
Walk another 15mins
-
walk about 1 mile from my house to get to where i hunt. (not old enogh to drive yet so i have to walk)
-
Walk out the back door (private)or drive 15 minutes to either a 275 Ac (private) or 380 Ac (private) or drive 20-25 minutes to either 58,000 ac (public)or 30-35 minutes to 62,000 acres (public)

Attaboy, $bowhunter$!! That is the kind of stuff I often did as a teen hunting fanatic, and it was SO worthwhile. Congratulations on your initiative and willingness to do what it takes. I predict good things and a lot of satisfaction (and success) in your hunting career! Keep after 'em...
-
yea its very rewarding. i got my 1st buck last year and ended up having to drag a 200 pound deer nearly half a mile bak before my neighbor picked us up on his tractor.one of the most fun but tireing walks home. ( the tractor helped alot, saved me from having to walk up the huge hill we live on)
-
Usually just a few miles out to where I grew up. Family has a couple hundred acres and endless public land.
This year has been so screwed up I havent even gotten out of the yard.
Eric

Unit 33 in NM, where I drew out this year, starts about 25 miles away (to the SE corner). I can't get more than about 90 miles away and stay within its boundaries.
When I lived in Coeur d' Alene, ID, I usually drove about 20 minutes to hunt...and some of the locals laughed at me for going 'way out there' just to hunt.
-
I go crazy when this topic comes up, because I know so many people " walk" or drive a mile.. And I want to Hunt Sooooooo Badly.
So I'll say... Minimum 2 hours drive plus hour walk. 5 hours to my spot this year and If I hunt deer in nebraska.. another 5 hours....It really does take the enjoyment out of it..
-
hey matty if you want to get more enjoyment in hunting without the drive set up some bird and squirrel feeders in your back yard. youll have a good many targets without the drive
-
Yep - for years I could hunt a bunch of different places all within walking distance or a short 5-10 minute drive from my house. Now I hunt one area that is 15-30 minutes depending on which end I hunt or my other area is a good hour and a half away to the boat dock and then another 30 minutes to unload the boat and get to the hunting area. Its an adventure but its also a chore - especially when it gets daylight at 5:45 in the morning.
I didn't know how good I had it when I could hunt out my door!
-
About 50 yards from the kitchen door of our log cabin. If the wife rattles pans I hear her.
-
Depends on what I'm hunting. Can hunt deer out the back door sometimes.
Elk,whitetail and antelope when I can get a tag is all within a half hour.
-
Right now, the shortest drive is min to the bro-in-law's farm but the outlook is bleak there. Too many "nuisance permits" (read as poaching liscence) and coyote's allowed to run unchecked. I have pretty much written them off as good hunting land. 30 min away there is a small farm with quite a few deer and turkeys. I will concentrate on it but I wish I didn't have to drive the 30 min to get there. I also have an invitation open to a hunting club in the Adirondack mtns. That i can go to for deer and bear. I hope to go next year for a bear. They are about 2-1/2 hrs from me.
-
Before I was married I asked a redhead that question and got a slap for it!
I live and work in the Peoples Republic of NYC. So many times I drive 127 miles, one way to my log home in The Northern Catskills to hunt. This year I did some hunting in Westchester County only 40 miles from home. Felt like a dream......
... mike ...
-
Our primary public spot is about 30 minutes away and our emergency backup public spot is more like 45. Not too bad.
-
Just depends can be 10 minute's or 15 Hours...
-
I can hunt on the creek bank in my backyard. The biggest live deer I've ever seen in KY was 92 yards from my deck. However, I hunt about 1/2 mile from my property on an adjacent farm or on 16 acres my son owns adjacent to my property.
When I hunt with my friend in IN, 2-3 times per year I travel 243 miles one-way.
The best place I ever had to hunt was 50 miles, each way from North Liberty, IN to Elkhart, IN. I would average ab out 60 trips a year to that spot in Elkhart in those days -- too many and too far.
-
Drove 22 hours one way to hunt bear last spring. It was L-O-N-G ways, and I decided not to shoot a badly rubbed bear... but it was worth it!
-
Only 5500 miles to arrive in Colorado and then some more 5 hours to my camp, then 3 hours from the trailhead. It takes me almost 5 days since I leave my home. Then a little bit more coming back.
-
Some hunts...15 min./ others 1 hour 10 min. about 1 1/2 hours is the farthest. If I do go farther its for more time like 3-4 days.
-
Live a mile off the road. Just walk to a stand or blind. I am so blessed, and spoiled to.
-
I got the following.
38 acres 1 mile
33 acres 2 miles
52 acres 17 miles
160 acres 22 miles
20 acres 24 miles
Lots of public hunting about 5 miles. Depends where you want to hunt on it.
-
I envy some and feel sorry for others. I guess ya just gotta love it! Jason
-
My elk mountain is close, I can see it from my deck. I drive 400 miles to hunt whitetails...
-
I get on a plane and fly for almost 24 hours.
-
i made sure that i would live and raise my family in the country so that it wasen't that far for hunting, fishing and any other outdoor activity. i hunt out my backdoor most of the time, and can drive no more than a 1/2 hour to several public hunting grounds around me. we all make choices in life, i prefer the country life. i even had one treestand that i named '' the mailbox stand'' and it was about 20 yds. from my mailbox.
-
Bledsoe National Forrest is 1/10th of a mile from my driveway. It's several thousand acres and I can't tell you how great that is!
-
I have killed Mule deer, Whitetail and Black bear on my property. For Moose my favorite spot is a half hour drive or boat ride. And I am surrounded by literally millions of acres of public land full of game. But if I want to hunt Turkey it is 12 hours driving at least!! I am blessed. Bob
-
I am a bit spoiled I guess, I can literaly slip out the back door and be on private land within 50 yards! There is a nice woods back there owned by a neighbor who tells me to treat it like it was mine.
There are 3 other public land areas within a 3o minute drive.
I can drive or walk a mile down the road and be on a great public fish and wildlife area as well. That property was the main selling point when I bought the new house. Perfect access!
And to top it off I can be in Indiana on private land with less than a 20 minute drive! Even better I bought a lifetime license for Indiana way back when I lived there so the tags are free!
With all those places close to home i still drive a couple hours a few times a year to hunt with freinds and family.
-
I drove a 1000 miles one way this year. That was only half way across our state. I hope that makes you feel better. :bigsmyl:
-
Grew up on 140 ac in NE Jersey back in the day when ya could hunt... Could walk out door and hunt.
Went to school and ended up here in Southern Illinois. Can walk out door or go 5 min down the road to my other property or neighbors places. Shawnee NF is all around me interspaced by crop farms. Its a hunters dream.
I am spoiled
-
20 minute drive.....15-20 minute walk in
-
it varys I have 8 stand they range from 50yards to 3-5 miles away
-
22 miles to public land or 44 miles round trip, 11,000 acers. 3 routes to get there but all are within 1 mile of each other.
-
Just a fifty yard walk out my back door and I am in prime whitetail country.I am also lucky enough to have permission to hunt about a half mile to the east. Life is good.
-
Drove an hour for several years. Have been fortunate the last 2 and only drive about 3 miles.
-
Farthest this season was 5 hours in state, but shot my buck in the late season 2 miles from home.
-
I'm lucky I just have to walk a few yards out my front door. However, the deer numbers have been small these past few years(but picking up).....Phil
-
I have stands right behind the house and live in the middle of lots of public land, but also drive up to 2 hours to hunt other places.
-
My two best private spots are 1.5 to 2 hours away. I have public land within 30 minutes but so does the rest of Indy and the hunting quality shows it.
-
Now that I have moved, I have a 4 hour drive to my lease. I don't go as often as i did when it was only 30 min away, but I stay and hunt more days in a row. I guess it evens out for hours in the woods I guess.
OkKeith
-
I like to drive and keep it under 1200 miles.
-
I probably have over 30 peices of private property to hunt, people ask me too hunt. Having a good reputation as an ethicall and legal bowhunter can really get around, If your ever in the mountains of NC i would be more than happy to help someone out.
-
Growing up, I had access to my family's 40 acres plus about another 70 acres of neighboring land and I thought that being restricted to that tiny little parsle was no way for an aspiring mountain man to live... Now, the closest public land is 40 minutes away and my folks are an hour away and we are pretty much restricted to their 40 these days.
Didn't know when I had it so good.
-
I'm lucky to have a WMA bordering my property so all I have to do is walk across the road if I choose. But, there is some better hunting up the river here so I'll drive 15-30 minutes if I feel like it.
-
i have 300 acres of private land, 15 min. away, just inside the city limits that's bowhunting only with some of the best hunting in the area. i have 70 acres on my farm, 30 mins. away, surrounded by 200,000+ acres of wma land. guess i'm lucky.
-
It takes me 20-25 minutes to drive to my hunting area.
-
I hunt 10 mins to 2 hours away depending on the tags and the time of season
-
I have good deer and squirrel hunting a flight shot and a half from my house. Or I drive 15min to a friends private property, he's got deer, turkey, and too many bears.
-
I'm very blessed, I just moved to a 575 Acre ranch.........
-
The only hunt I plan on for sure every year is in Nebraska and I'm currently living in Idaho so about 16 hours with good weather. Hunted northern CA this year which was about 9 hours. Colorado antelope I flew so that doesn't really count...
-
15 min to 9 or so hours depending what I'm after in CO. Out of state hunts lol as far as my bank will let me!
-
Coyotes 25 minutes half of that is trying to get out of town. black tails 30 minutes to two and a half hours. I drive all day calling coyotes.
-
I have a place with in 5 minutes drive but my favorite and most hunted place is 45 minutes drive.
-
Growing up I'd hunt right from the house. Now I live about an hours drive from the same area and prefer to drive back rather then hunt private land around town. Every year I go a few places that might be 4-6 hours drive just to see something new.

About an 1 1/2 to get to my public hunting spot and I feel lucky to have it living on long island.
-
About a 45 min drive to public land.
-
We drive about 4 hours and haul horses. When we get to our general area we pack in about 7 miles using the horses and then hunt on foot about a 3 mile radius from camp. Sometimes we will move the camp after a few days to another drainage and set up again. We do use the horses to pack out our game. We will usually archery elk hunt this way for 7-10 days. I also have a spot about 7 miles from home where I take my boat across the river and hunt a rocky canyon for deer. This year I had a mountain lion in there that kept things pretty stirred up. The lion was in season and I would have been glad to put an arrow in him, but never got a shot. Maybe next year.
-
Usually a 30 minute drive and a hour walk in, LOL! :goldtooth:
-
From 1 to 80 miles and everywhere in between.
-
I have about 100 acres to hunt a mile from home and also a member of a hunt club that is about 75 miles away. But there is a cabin with a wood stove, running water and a satellite dish!
-
30 acres private- 20 miles
140 acres private- 40 miles
several public lands within 2 hours or so but dont hunt them much
-
For our Idaho elk hunt I drive 26 hours.
Mike
-
I walk to my hunting areas. Got about a 200 acre soybean or corn field 50yds behind me that boarders Shawnee National Forest, Il. and probably 800 acres or more of private land across the road I can hunt any way I want. It's mostly pasture with strips of woods through out and boarders Shawnee also. I haven't hunted it yet, but did look it over last summer and it's loaded with turkey and I'm going to hunt it spring gobbler season. Lots of turkey and deer behind me also.
In the 4yrs I've hunted this area I've never seen another hunter during archery season and only once saw another hunter during gun season.
-
Whitetails and turkeys are about a 5 minute drive. To where I can hunt elk, about 30 minutes, but the elk always seem to know I'm coming, so they leave the country. :banghead:
-
A lot of lucky guys here... I have to travel to hunt... No bowhunting as yet in Norway, my last trip was over 24 hours to South africa....
-
I can walk out my door and hunt within 50 yards, but I also drive to Idaho, Il, and Canada to hunt.
-
I drive about 45 min to 150 acres where a trapper friend lets me hunt on his property.
Public land is within 45 minutes the other way, but I've never tried hunting there... too many horror stories... but I don't know if they're true!
-
I can start hunting in my backyard and for miles in surrounding farm and ranch country! But have been known to drive a 1000 miles-20+ hours for a good hog hunting fix !!! LOL

I live pretty close to you that is a sweet set up!
A lot of lucky people here!
I have 2 choices.
1) Drive 20 to 25 minutes to hunt state land surrounded by suburbs that has as many hunters as deer.
2) Drive 80 minutes 65 miles to hunt a lease, and walk a half a mile.
#2 is what I do most for safety for me and my kid when he goes with me.
-
When I'm hunting here in Iowa I drive about 15 miles. When I'm hunting at our property in Wisconsin I can be in the woods in 10 yds. I'm really spoiled by that!
-
Just a little past the barn. Maybe 60 yards. In 2005 I had knee surgery just before bow season and for the first time in 15 years I put up a treestand. Thought ahead and put it up a month before the surgery. I arrowed a deer 85 yards from my back door.
Usually I walk in a quarter mile or more. And more often than not I find tracks just off the mowed spots around the gardens near the house.
Two weeks ago there were deer tracks going across the foot bridge between our house and barn. Walked within 12 feet of our bedroom. God, I love whitetail.
32 ft long and 4 ft wide over an 8 ft drop into a creek. I could not believe a deer would cross it.

Hunting areas are between a 10 minute drive to a 40 minute drive. Both areas are public land, bow only. Season runs from Oct 15 to Dec 31. Walk in is about 20 minutes from the car. Both spots clear out in Nov when gun season opens. Southey zone NY.

Up till 3yrs ago use to walk out the door or drive 30 min to my uncles 100ac farm. Had to sell my farm but I still hunt at my uncles. Some nice big bucks have taken at his place.
-
I am currently hunting 3/4 of a mile down the road. I hope to get a bicycle to ride next year so I can get there quickly and not leave a vehicle on the spot.
-
I am very fortunate. i moved to a farm 5 years ago and now walk out my door to hunt. I found a shed Monday behind my little old piggy barn, it is 75 yards from the back door.
-
hey stump killer i have sort of the same thing on my driveway with a bridge just big enougth to get a car over, deer use it almost every day
-
I grew up with access to several thousand acres of prime hunting land in WV and it was just outside my front door. I didn't realize how spoiled I was until I joined the military and tried to find places to hunt. I drove about and hour and 15min to hunt in WA, I hunted on base in CA but the drive was anywhere from 15 to 30min. Now I'm in NC and haven't tracked down a place here yet but I drive back to my family's land in WV to hunt and it's 5 hours one way.
-
It can be from 5 mins to 5 hours depending on what part of the state I'm hunting.
-
I hunt right around the house and have become spoiled since the wife and I purchased the farm (200ac) almost 13 years ago. I do have another 600 ac that I hunt about 13 miles up the road...but that 's about as far as I travel anymore...
-
Bought the farm I live on 12 years ago this July.Have a few deer around to hunt & lots of turkey...I do drive to some other WMA's to hunt some but the majority is close to home....
-
My closest is 5 miles and the farthest is 75 miles.

I can hunt a short walk out the back door or 2 areas within 2 miles of home. I feel blessed to have the convenience to hunt (and scout) so close to home.
Ted
-
It's normally a 3 to 4 hour drive to the places I've been hunting the last 12 or so years. Plan on hunting public land next season so Im not sure how thats gonna work out yet.
-
My drive ranges from hopping on the ATV from the house for 15 minutes (muleys and elk) to 1250 miles for whitetails. And many distances in between.
-
OVER 7000 MILES BY AIR AND THEN SEVERAL HOURS DRIVING FROM HOUSTON.
-
2 miles
Kris
-
It all depends on what the hunting is. Deer I can be all set in the tree or blind within 20 minutes. Moose I go 17 hours, that's the problem with Ontario it's so damn big. In reality I could drive less than 3 hours to be in moose hunting but just not the big woods north country I've grown to love and miss when I can't make it.
-
Wednesday we are going to head to Texas for pigs. Looking at 950 miles of windshield time. Both my sons will be with me,first time for my older son. Should be a good time. At least I will get to spend some quality time with them. And who knows maybe they will convert to trad, they both shoot wheels now.
-
35-40 minutes. Private and public. My own private land is but a dream.
