Title: need help with a string/brace height issue
Post by: $bowhunter$ on November 26, 2010, 07:34:00 PM
hey guys i was looking up some info on my recurve and it says it came with a factory brace height of about 9 inches. its a 68" recurve with a 64" string the problem is there is only about a 5-6" brace height. i just found the factory sting from 1966 and it is about 60" long.
im completely confused on this can someone tell me whats goin on?
thanks,
steven

First ? what size string did you order. Did you twist the string when you attatched it to bow?. Then can you twist the new string up any more?.Sounds like you ordered the wrong string or you measured the bow wrong.

Your string should be 65" or at least I would think.  Your string will stretch after it has been shot and you will have to adjust your brace.  If it calls for a 9" brace, remember that is just a good starting point.  Unstring it and twist your string tighter then re-string and measure.  Keep repeting this until you get around 9".  Then shoot it and play with you brace height, raise and lower, until you find what your bow likes for your shooting style.  Remember nort all bows or shooting forms are the same.  The right brace for you may be more or less than 9" but if the recommended height is 9" I would think 5-6 is definitly too low.

You may want to contact a stringmaker like Oliver Stacey and tell them what kind of bow you have, you may need a 60" string but that sounds really short for a 68" bow.

With dacron, a 64" string would be where I would have started for a 68" bow (rule of thumb is a string that is 3" shorter than the bow length, but dacron stretches more so they are typically another inch shorter to compensate for the stretch).

Having said that, if the bow calls for a 9" brace height, then that changes everything.  Most "AMO" length strings will yield a brace height in the mid 7" range.

If I were to guess, I would think that a dacron string with an actual length of around 62" would get you to that brace height.  But, there are so many variables involved, the biggest being the fact that not all bows are measured the same.

Put the 60" (actual length) string on the bow and let us know what brace height it has.

Your 68" Palomino should take a 64" unstretched (measured from the ends of each loop) dacron endless loop string.  After shooting in it should give you the correct brace height with a few twists if necessary.  Unless that particular Palomino was a fluke.  Good luck...Van
