I can't get the search function to work so I figured I would just ask. Pros and cons? I will be using aluminum arrows to start out with and would like to move on to wood. Thanks.
Feathers. Vanes are stiff and can cause a lot of tuning problems shooting off of a shelf.
Traddict is right. Unless your useing an elevated rest you don't want vanes. Even then I still prefer feathers. Just more traditional to me. Good luck!

i've set up and shot vanes (spin wings and kurly vanes) off a longbow shelf with no serious problems. it can be done. just not as forgiving and efficient as feathers, imho.
Off an elevated rest vanes can't be beat, I love them. So much better in bad weather that feathers.
some recurves will allow shooting vames off the shelf but most require an elevated rest. You can't beat vanes- they are faster, quieter, heavier and add weight to the rear of your arrow which stiffens your shaft, are more durable and of course are water proof.......but they are not considered traditional so there you go...
I mostly shoot vanes off my ILF rigs love them
I've shot vanes off recurves for years. I use a bear weather rest and cut it down some. Then cover the side and rest with moleskin. They fly great and are quieter when stalking. You dont get that feather crunch when you brush up against something. They're cheaper than feathers also.

i shoot woodies and feathers.i shoot instinctive off the shelf.i have heard that you need an elevated rest to shoot vanes.i think feathers are the way to go.that is just my opinion.just shoot what ever you like, that is the beauty of it.good luck, steve
For shooting off the shelf, it's feathers for me.
I will be shooting off of the shelf so feathers seem like the logical choice. Thanks for all the feedback, each time I ask a question I get a ton of responses that I hadn't considered. I love this forum...
Never owned an arrow with vanes, part 2 wont.My goose feathers on my hunting arrows have never gave me any problems or laid down no matter how bad a downpour I have been in.
