Title: Anyone Hunt Turkey in Nebraska
Post by: Bowwild on November 25, 2010, 01:16:00 PM
I'm planning to go to Nebraska in early April to bowhunt turkey.

Anyone out there hunt an area referred to as the "Pines"? I think it is in the NW part of NE?   Any chance a fellow (and best friend) can get bow shots at multiple birds in 3-4 days?

I"m going to do this right before or after the 50th Anniversary of the Pope & Young Club.

Bowwild,

I've been out to NE the last few springs.  The first year I was out there, 2007, was the best.  Those birds were so vocal.  I hunt the SW part of NE.  My grandfather/mother are from Maywood and Curtis.  It's about a 1/2 South from North Platte. Not so sure about the "pines" area but I know NE has quite the population of birds.  In the spring you can carry up to three permits at once and they're over the counter.  In the fall one permit is good for two birds.  Check out Nebraska Game and Parks Commission web site.  Has all the information you'll need and a distribution map.  You may also try posting this question in the "Nebraska" forum towards the bottom of the home page.  Good luck, I got my first turkey out there with my recurve and no blind.  They also start their bow only season the last week in March.  Maybe get a jump on the gun hunters...

You are probably thinking about Pine Ridge area.. Far NW Nebraska, tons of public ground and has always been one of the premier areas for turkey. You can rent cabins at Chadron State Park or Ft Robinson, and hunt almost out of your back door if you desire.. Only area of the state where there are still a few pure strain Merriam's.
Check Nebraska Game and Parks web site or google up Ft Robinson
