I was given this compass many years ago. All I know about it is it was made in France, it has a brass case and cover and a locking mechanism for the direction pointer when the cover is put on.
Please help age it and appraise it for me.

I looked on an antique compass website but didn't see anything like it but I'd guess WW1 or before.
Thats pretty cool. Does it still work?
Looks very close to the one my father brought back from WW2. Sorry that's all.

Nice compass. Go to the unmentionable auction site and do a search on 'antique compass' you will find quite a number, some of which look like yours.

Yes, it works very well. I would like to use it in the field but if I lost it I would be REALLY PISSED. I keep it in a curio with all my knives.
I did a search on the auction site that shall not be named, and the completed compass sales I saw (that looked like yours) went from $6 to $12, with most around $10. Not worth a fortune, but definitely worth keeping! I have collected a few old compasses, but haven't come across one like this.

I just found it on another antique site for $125.00.

Ah yes, but what they ask and what they will get may be two different things. Regardless, that is an item to hang on to. It is old, it is cool looking, and it works!
