I usually shoot 2 to 3 times a week at the local archery range.
Generally I shoot at distances of 20 to 50 yards.
Recently I made up a dozen of each Douglas Fir Surewoods and Hildebrand Sitka Spruce arrows.
Today I learned how impact resistant those woodies can be.
My shooting was off key today and I missed the 40 and 50 yard target bales a total of 6 times.
Every miss was one of the woodies and every arrow survived.
The range has a backstop called granite.
The arrows got a bit scuffed up, but no shafts broke or were permanently damaged.
The field points were visibly deformed and also lost a couple of nocks by direct impact on granite.
If the woodies had been POC I am sure I would have broken at least 4 or 5 of them.
I really recommend the fir and spruce shafts after this experience.
Charles.
I just made up my first half dozen of the Doug Fir shafts, and they have awesome grain, good weight (heavier than POC), and are amazingly straight. I haven't shot them yet, but everyting is pointing to a great shaft.
I have had the same experience. It makes it so you don't need all those arrows you used to make. Now the fletching wears out. Gary
I can't wait to get mine(surewood) to try out!!
Thank you for sharing.
I really like my Hildebrands. That spruce is tough stuff.
