After taking his free-ranging bison last winter on the Lakota Sioux Reservation in South Dakota with his longbow and stone point, Mark Mitten ("Carcass") has done it again. This weekend he tagged an honest B&C 6x5 whitetail with his Great Northern longbow using a stone point on an 800 grain arrow. Complete pass through liver hit. I can't say as I've ever heard of a B&C class buck taken in modern times with a stone arrowhead. Gross 181", net 172". We're putting the finishing touches on the sequel to our Primal Dreams DVD. We'll try to squeeze it in there. I have to say something. Mark's bison hunt that will be a part of our new DVD is, in my opinion, the finest bowhunting footage I have ever seen. It is absolutely breath-taking. That eight minute segment alone is "worth the price of admission"! Someone else might have to post photos. I'm going hunting!
way cool Gene. congrats mark :clapper:
Congrats Mark. What an accomplishment. Thanks for letting us in Gene
Way to go Mark! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

Wow - that is something - looking forward to pics. Congrats Mark! Thanks Gene.
Also looking forward to the pictures, quite an accomplishment Mark.
Congrats Mark!
It's good to see someone doing what a lot of us would like to do. I have primitive arrows that I made up to use as well as a primitive bow. Just can't seem to get out there this year. Age seems to be creeping up on me.
Way to go Mark! Thanks Gene for reporting it. Inspiration for all of us. :archer2:
Man you guys rule!!!! :notworthy: :notworthy:

:notworthy: :clapper:
Somewhere I saw pics of that Bison hunt... I simply cannot wait to watch the footage..!
He posted yesterday, unless he spent the night in the treestand, shouldn't we have pics by now?
Carcass never posts. He does not use a computer. He has to use rocks to kill stuff. I think I need to give him a new nickname.... how about "Fred Flintstone" ! He has had a tough day and is at work, but my brother David "Whitey" will get the pics from him tonight and we can get them on here for you guys who are not in the stone-age. Ha! Mike
Mike that is funny  Hope his day improves and tell him congrats! Mike
Pictures :p :p :p
Great to hear! Congrats to Mark.
Congratulations. Look forward to the photos. :clapper:
squeeze it in the dvd and i will buy one, really i will get it anyways!big congrats to mark.

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: awsome!
ya-ba-daba-do!!!
Just to make you guys feel a little better neither Gene nor I have seen the buck/pictures yet either... and he is our "brother". We must have patience. I just got off the phone with him (Flintstone). Apparently his still camera broke too. He threw it away and bought a new one today. They are presently putting the digital pics on a disk where Whitey will download them and hopefully be able to get them posted ASAP... that is if Whitey doesn't have to babysit or do laundry, dishes or something along those lines tonight. ha. BW
What-do-ya mean disk??? Tell him to use a media card and be done with it. Haven't I taught you guys anything? Talk about stoneage:^) What would you guys do without poor Whitey? Gimmee a break . . .
I spoke with "Fred Flintstone" today... the story behind the deer is very cool. I just spent 5 days with big brother Mike in Utah...Those Mitten boys are hardcore...But according to Mike, Mark, aka...Carcass, Dobler, and now Fred, is very computer limited. Lets hope lil brother "Whitey" can get us some pics...By the conversation I had with Mark, its a beautiful buck!
Have patience trad bowhunters.... here they are and the broken arrow after pass-through 5th rib from rear hitting one lung and liver.

WOW! Congratulations! What a deer!
Congrats
Decent buck... but I bet my buck would have whupped his buck in a fair fight even with one hoof tied behind his back. They'd lock up and Flintstone's (aka Carcass') buck would be having tines snapped off left and right while screaming Uncle. UB
What a beast! Congrats!
UB, there aint no way an Iowa buck could whip an Illinois buck, and Barry please don't cut your fingers on your bucks sharp teeth. Ha! Just kidding guys, I would love to just see any one of your two bucks in the woods. Good deal guys.
Mike
A job well done on a fine animal... Thank you for sharing with us...
Congrats
Nice! congrats and thanks.
Great job Carcass!
congrats ! what a monster !
WOW!! What a DANDY!!! Congrats!
beautiful deer. congrats!
Congrats Mark, I'd get you in a head lock and give you a noggie but I don't think I can get my arms around your neck.LOL :notworthy:
Mark...Congratulations on a great accomplishment. I'm anxious for PDII.
I saw one bigger than that behind my stand a few weeks ago but I ain't saying where. It could have kicked Barry's buck's butt for sure and most likely Mark's as well:^) The problem is that he's still roaming the woods and the other two bucks are in the freezer. "Anticipation often exceeds realization." - Fred Bear
Nice, really super buck with a stone point. Amazing that it didn't break, hitting a rib. Congratulations
Good for Mark! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
Congrats, that's a beautiful buck, even if uncle Barry's could of kicked the crap out of it.
WOW!....congrats!
ATA-BOY
What an impressive buck...and I don't care who the winner of the fight would be,I'd just want to watch it from ringside. Congrats, Mark.
Well, now that our sweet tooth, errrr, I mean pic tooth has been satisfied...... how bout a story on this beast ? We will of course need to hear about the bow, head, arrows, etc, etc. The story can be as long as you want fellas !
That is one heck of a buck, and sticking that stone head in him, that is just AWESOME!!!!
I'd like to hear the details of the shot and recovery -- plus the bow, arrow and head spec's, when you guys get a chance.
Beautiful deer, congratulations!
Very cool, congratulations Mark!!!
save this post for the "stone head, naysayers" - speaking of that, I guess "flintstone" is a better nickname than "stonehead" :)
Great buck no matter how is was taken. Congratulations for sure
Bob Urban
Really nice buck!! Congrats!!
God Bless,
Nathan
Great job Mark.
Jack
Way to go!!!
Awesome Deer! Mike...and Uncle B...no Iowa deer or Illinois deer would stand a chance against a Big Utah Muley! Imagine 300 lbs...big wide rack...deep forks...heavy massive bases...and that graceful mule deer stride...yup, whitetails are ok...but they just dont have what a big muley has...
...PI
Very nice buck, congrats!
Whoo! Congratulations that was worth wait, and I only got to look at the picture. Can't imagine making the shot or putting my hands on that big boy.
The Highest of Deer hunting accomplishments. Congrats!!!
Man that is a thing of beauty!!!
Very nice!
Mark said he used the Great Northern Bush Bow he got at Compton's. It was an early '90 model that draws 75#. He had many archery notable sign it for good luck. He made his arrows out of laminated birch with 4 wild turkey feathers and a self nock. The head was Kentucky flint knapped by Don Gilson (Mich) that was about 1 1/8 inch wide and weighed 125 gr. He tied it on with deer sinew and used a little glue to smooth out the transition between head and shaft. The finished arrow weighed 800 gr.
He was in a tree stand positioned in a thicket that he could see out into an oak grove. He saw a doe with a fawn feeding on acorns or fallen leaves fro near by bushes. He did not think she was in heat any more due to the closeness of the fawn. The fawn started running around and playing, like they do, when Mark saw the huge 11-point buck come into where they were. Mark grunted 2 times and the buck immediately left the doe and walked straight at him. Since he was in the thicket, he did not have a wide shooting area, only a small lane from that direction. The buck stood straight on in his lane at 16 yards. Mark held at ready, but could only wait for the buck to make the next move. Shortly the fawn began running around again causing the buck to look in its direction. As the leaves and brush rustled from the fawn's play, the big buck needed to get a better look, so it turned sideways, giving Mark the broadside shot he was wishing for. He sent the stone tipped arrow on its way and saw it pass completely through the buck and strike something hard in the ground on the other side.
After waiting a while, Mark got down to pick up his arrow. It was then he noticed that the shaft was broke at the notch where the flint was secured. It hit a stone so hard after passing through the deer that it cracked the shaft end. The shaft was blood soaked and it was exciting to follow the trail for the first 70 or 80 yards, but then it gave out. It took a while to find the deer, and the big buck made over 400 yards before it was found dead. The shaft passed between the 5th rib from the diaphragm at an angle that clipped one lung and the liver. Mark does not recommend taking anything other than a broadside shot and is seriously thinking about only shooting from the ground with these type heads in the future. The buck had 13 inch back tines and was over 20 inches wide inside spread. He filmed this same deer in a previous year, but had not seen it again until this final time. MIke
What an accomplishment! Congrat's Mark
I would love to try the same thing in the future.
Great story!
Thanks for sharing!
chris <><
Wow that's really sumthin'!! I can't think of any booners killed with a rock either.
As a side note, I haven't been around much lately and noticed in the first post about how you guys are putting on the finishing touches to the Primal Dreams sequel.
What's it gonna be called and when will it be out? Is there a list yet??? I'd like to be on it if there is.
Thanks Dave. Yes the title of our new feature is "Essential Encounters", and it will be a family oriented hunting film, so I think your girls will like it. We have had so many set back with it trying for perfection that I really don't want to give a launch date, but I think Gene will start a list as soon as we have the finall version mastered and we go to duplicating. My brother David has not been able to hunt much this year since he started editing. I know I certainly appreciate his talent. Its a lot more that just bushing buttons. He has the vision! Ha! I'm sure we will be using tradgang as well as brothersofthebow.com to keep everyone updated as we near the finishline with this massive project. Mike
Writing a book is an enormous accomplishment but putting your story in a visual form with little speaking involved and coming out with a high quality product as you and the guys have done is a work of art.
Very cool!! Congrats!!!!
Great story and super accomplishment. Thanks for sharing!
Mike, did you say "Kentucky flint"???:^)
That is one handsome buck..Congrats..Those Wensel don't have anything on those Mitten boys..WOW..Can't wait to see that on the big screen..
Cool!
Great buck.
This is how some of his semi-primitive arrows look before Mark hunts. MIke

Way to go Mike, now that's impressive.

Thanks Herdbull for that detailed story. What a awesome trophy ! Congrats bud !!!
Congratulations Mark on an awesome buck!
Mike - "Barry please don't cut your fingers on your bucks sharp teeth"...great friends right there! Laughed out loud!
Bryan
Congrats!!
What an accomplishment. Big bison and now a big buck. Way to go again Mark.
Congratulations!! That is one fine buck!!! And bagged with a stone head!!!  :notworthy:
The only thing better than killing a buck like that yourself, would be if someone you loved was able to take it.
Add the fact that it was stones vs bones...simply amazing.
I saw a buck like that once...then I woke up.
:campfire:
The stone age strikes again. really nice to see some one using stone and reporting on it. makes $15 broadheads seem rather silly.
Congrats to Mark! That is a real beauty.
What a deer!!! :clapper:
Congrats on a fine animal! :clapper:
I have some stone points made up with rivercane that I have yet to get a shot with. I was kind of leary about the effectiveness of stone... NOT NOW!!
Awesome, congrats Mark!
Way to go Mark... I recognized the head as one of Dons even before Mike told us it was a Gilson point. I've taken a few deer with Dons flint heads, they're precision made and tough as nails... :banghead:
Thats correct Ron. The heads are very strong and have just the right abount of material left down the center. Mark has one that he practices with. He only takes close shots at deer. Ron, I also see your signature on his bow. That must have been the extra mojo he needed. Ha!
NICE!!!
Mike, I don't think he needs any mojo from me to be successful... :D
Like everyone else I'm really looking forward to the new DVD. You "Brothers" are doing a great job :notworthy: :notworthy:
Congratulations to Mark and Mike can you tell him to look a little more "CaveManIshi" for these pics since he's using stone heads? Let the hair standout on his face a week and his hair look like a string Puff like yours did a few years ago in one of your pics....You might be able to photoshop something on your brother...Good buck and looks like it could really kick Uncle DingleBerry's buck! :p
Keefer-
Like this?
Or Do You mean look like he just crawled out of a hollow log? I will be sure to tell him. Ha! Ha!
That's the one Mike... :scared: Makes it look like ya been hunting for weeks and not like ya just stepped out out of Floyds Barber shop on Andy Griffith ... :D Better you tell him then me cause I had 5 brothers and I know if I got smart with the older ones look out...Just tell him Barry started the whole thing... :clapper: Keefer's <")))><
Mark Awesome!! Congratulations!! And round of Applause! :smileystooges:
very nice!
Thats funny Matty!!!!!
Good work Boys, can't wait to see the new dvd myself...keep up the good work!
Matty: That is really funny. What he means is David will need to work it into the feature so everything "flows". I think the guy has only hunted three days this season trying to get it finished but still perfect. We're already too late for the Christmas present orders so any other additions/changes will just set us back more in getting it out. But this is just too good not to include. It's been five years since we brought out Primal Dreams. If we don't use this now it may be years down the road and we absolutely don't want to wait on this. You have to realize there's five of us "brothers" filming for five years/seasons since PD. We have hundreds of hours of great footage we need to sort through in order to offer the very best. Think about that. If you watch the raw footage for twelve hours a day it'd take over two weeks to just review it. Then we need to break it down to the best, then the best of the best, then lay it out in a format that makes some sense and is meaningful. Have patience my friends. It will be worth it in the end. Happy Thanksgiving to all. BW
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is just too awesome.
wow thats pretty cool, take a big buck, with a stone.
I would like to hear more about Keefer and the white muley horns looks like alpine country
HornHunter-
Yes that rack was from a dead buck I found in the rocks. I was hunting mule deer at over 12000 on a 2 week solo hunt in Co. I came very close, as a matter of fact nocked arrows every day on big bucks, but they all bested me. Ha! Have a great Thanksgiving. Mike
Mike
big alpine muleys are my favorite subject, I think there the toughest animal in North America
email me sometime if you want to talk mule deer
