google codet wool pants
I got the LL Bean Wool Parka and it is warm when the wind is not blowing but it don't have the tight weave that i think you really need for when the wind blows 15 mph +
I also don't want to spend that kind of cash for the type of hunting I do, but I am certain the stuff is great.
I have a pair of the cheaper (relatively) Columbia wool pants and with 1 layer (2 tops when it's really cold) of polypro and I have to say I never have gotten cold. I only wear them once temps get down to freezing or below or if it's cold and rainy. I think they are in the $70-$80 price range. On top I have a Cabelas wool shirt (fleece on the inside) and it literally becomes my jacket. That was about $70 also, but I don't think they sell that one anymore. I layer with polypro accoring to temps and use a Berber vest as well in combination. Nice wool is great stuff I'm sure, probably more durable, etc., but this stuff has done a nice job for me and is in the price range I am willing to spend. I do want to try the Asbell and/or Longhunter wool from Ron LaClair at some point.
Asbell and LaClair
Grey Wolf Woolens here in Wisconsin, just had mine on today, love'em! They have a Predator pattern.

Jeff is great to work with!

La Clair longhunter shirt is the bomb!
I've got two of Teresa Asbell's pull overs. They are well made, warm and I haven't spent used up $100 bill including shipping for them both.
Cabelas Windshear Wool sweater (for layering) $59 on sale.
what size pants do you need i have a pair for sale codet size 38- 40 31 inseam they are listed here under clothes 25.oo
Tim, keep your eyes on the classifieds, There is a wool jacket and matching pants now for $110. I think it would fit you! I may buy it myself.
I've got some great deals in the classifieds
If you wear a medium, I'll deal on my KOM shirt/jacket that's on the classified board.
I bet it will keep you warm in some pretty darn cold temps.
God bless,Mudd
PS: I am set on upper body but am having a tough time finding 2X stuff for the lower body.
Columbia Gallatin Rnage. 85 bucks for pants and 85 bucks for coat. I have abused mine for 5-6 years. Great stuff for little cash. Put UA underneath and your good to go in just about any weather.
Depends on if you are stand hunting or spot and stalk..... Cabelas has some great stuff reasonably priced. The KOM and Sleeping Indian is much better but heavy to wear if you are moving and not just sitting in a tree.
The old saying goes: "Cry once or cry often": Spend the money and you'll never have to worry again. Buy inferior stuff(not referring to anything that has been mentioned above) and you may regret it later. My opinion at least. You can find KOM used at a reasonable price. I've used alot of wool products and will never purchase just because of a cheaper price again.
Classic Bowman. Beautiful stuff.
Woolrich and will last you a life time.
Just got Cabelas Outfitter Wool coat with wind/rain breathable liner. well made and will definetly hold up for many years, and warm.
Woolrich stuff is always good, for the price it is probably the best out there. I have a ten year old, at least green plaid coat of theirs with a lining of thinsulate and it has been used hard over the years, it looks like new, and it is very warm mid weight coat, I got the Cabelas for when it gets colder.
All that has been mentioned are very good. I think I owned just about all over the years but the darn things keep getting smaller.
Hard to beat the quality and price of Teresa Asbel's line. Got a new set on order. Had the last set since 1991 and again over the last 9 years outgrew them. Past all my wool though on down to the son.
one word ! goodwill, you can find all kinds of wool there.
Woolwrich, Codet, LL Bean when the price is right and any heavy sweater you can find at good will or garage sales!
I gotta agree with leatherneck. I'm a wool fanatic. Spend the money and buy some of the good stuff. I'm a big fan of both grey wolf and sleeping indian. Never Tried KOM, but have heard alot of good things about it. By far the most usefull pieces of wool I own, are the smartwool long underwear. I wear it nearly everyday from October through March for both hunting and for work. Get both weights. Layer accordingly, and you will be warm. I have a pair of excellent bibs from Grey wolf, but to be honest, since getting the smartwool long underwear, I have not even put them on in the last 2 seasons. This stuff solves the wind blocking problems that others have experienced with wool.
Also, never put cotton on underneath wool. The two fibers fight each other, and you will be cold. Wear quality wool long underwear underneath and you will be glad you did.
For the money it's hard to beat Columbia Gallint series. Go to Cabela's home page and type in Columbia wool in the search field. Thanks, Bob
I just bought a pair of Columbia wool pants at gander mountain $74.95 I like them they just need hemmed they have a 34" inseam
Check army surplus stuff. I have used surplus pants for years with no problems. I do have trouble finding decent sweaters though. Lighweight wool pants $10, heavyweight wool pants $25-30. Can be tough to get long inseam pants however.
I have used numerous less expensive wool garments in the past. Then a hunting buddy of mine told me to bite the bullet and spend the money. I went with Sleeping Indian wool, he has KoM. It does hurt buyng it, but will have it forever. My buddy has been using his bibs and jacket for 15 yrs. I have had my shirt/jac and bibs for 9 years.
I am using the same KOM shirt for 15 years elk hunting all around the Rockies,20 days a season in the early warm days or in the snow blizzard of the late season,it still looks like new.If you don't want to buy a new one look for a used one.

2009 late elk season.Bowhunters trust KOM.
Waiting on my pullover from Teresa Asbell to show up in mailbox this week.Best bang for the buck that I have found
I have had my KOM outfits for over 15 years now,and love it,if it ever wears out I will buy another no question about it. Save your pennies buy quality you won't regret it.
The saying "Buy Cheap and you'll buy twice" applies to wool for sure. That doesn't mean you have to give up shopping for value. I have found great deals on Filson, Pendelton and other brands. My next purchase will be a LaClair Longhunter.
You can get some very good deals right hear on TG if you looking for the good stuff. I've got some KOM and Gray Wolf Woolens for much less than new price and in VERY good condition.

G. FRED ASBEL!!! the woolies he offers are killer!!!
X2 on Sleeping Indian and KOM, with a slight lean in favor of SID for it's camo pattern. Been using both the last two seasons and will not go back to synthetics. Careful though, wool is very addictive:)
I have Gray Wolf, Woolrich, Asbell and Columbia. They all have their place with me but when it's cold and wet I grab the Grey Wolf first they are just a heavier material with a tight weave.

I like the looks of the Campaign hat being worn by the gentleman on the left. Next to a choice of wool clothing, finding a decent, sturdy wool/felt hat is almost as difficult, if not more. I've pondered the Campaign hat but dont' know anyone who uses one. Would it not get in the way of the string? Very Canadian looking.

Agreed. If you have a good thrift store. Some areas the place gets picked over fast. Other areas the surrounding population has nothing of value to give due to economic conditions.
If you research wool types you will find wool produced in Oregon and Washington is considered the best available in America. Pendelton and Filson use these super quality wools.
If you see these products in the thrifts and they have not been sent through a dryer, buy them.
They are, when placed side by side other products, clearly superior.

I'm a hat nut, I've got a hat for every day of the month. This is my Campaign hat, the brim is bent down in front instead of the traditional flat brim and it doesn't hinder shooting my bow.

Ron is that a scent stick in your lips?lol! Just kidding!
I got the wool packer from 3rivers. I love it. Soft the brim will bend with the string.
Keeping the Faith!

Every time I wear that Campaign hat I feel the urge to get out my Model 97 Winchester Riot gun and climb on a horse.. :goldtooth:
I do the mix and match thing,,Goodwill often has very nice wool sweaters,,army/navy surplus wool is inexpensive and the stuff is good quality,,,LaClairs pullover longhunters with the cape/hood are my favorites,,none of these are "camo" but they are earth tones and that's all you need.
LOL, love the stogie. Cigars and Pipes are always better in the outdoors. Think I am going to have to hunt out a campaign hat. Any suggestions on brands to look at or stay away from? Do they lose their shape in the rain?
I am very happy with my Columbia stuff and it seems comparably affordable. The classified adds on here has some excellant deals on slightly used ,you just have to be quick.
The Columbia stuff is very warm and comfortable. I have a pair of the gallatin range pants and though they are comfy I have found that snow piles up and sticks on quite quick. Must be the way the fabric is felted. With my swiss military surplus and SID pants I have never had the snow stick or pile on. If you wear gators it is not an issue; it's just something i've noticed. Like my swiss surplus pants the Columbia stuff is priced right.
