Title: My 1st Attempt at "Fake-Front" Blind.
Post by: Mudd on November 21, 2010, 10:03:00 AM
I know that this one will be better when I re-work it.

It's easy for me to see the work needed after looking at it on location.

Thanks for looking!

Not bad Mudd, just a bit of brushing in and maybe a dark spot of paint to break it up....I think that will work just fine! A bit of fine tuning and you'll be good to go!!!

That's one of the best replies I've seen on here!!!!

Looks good Mudd. Your colors match pretty good maybe just needs some vertical lines to break it up a little.

The truck is over on the other side of this big pile of dirt that covered with weeds and grass, actually parked on the driveway.

I didn't paint the blind, all you can see is the reflection of what's in front of it.

I can see over the top of it and I have scallops cut between the 4 panels that I can shoot over without any problem.

I guess my head is a little over the top of the blind but I'll have on a face mask and my ghillie head cover.

The blind is solid so unless it's "Superdeer" it shouldn't be able to look thru and see me..lol

God bless,Mudd

What about the head sticking over the top of it. Send a picture with you behind it in camo. That will tell all.

I used some kind of plastic wall board I found at Mennards. It was the cover sheet so I got it for 10 bucks.

I cut my panels then washed them down with soap and water. Once they were dry I camo'd the back side the same way I did my hunting trailer and I painted the front side flat black.(It takes quite a bit of black paint to cover white plastic)...lol

I bought a 15 ft roll of mirrored window covering and the best spray on adhesive I could find.

I cut it in half and then cut the halves not all the way into so they are still attached to each other but can be folded in halves. I had a buddy that works as a agricultural engineer help me figure out the angle I needed to cut the bottom off so when you set them up the top leaned out from you.

I glued on the plastic mirror then drilled some holes for tether lines and a couple in the center so I could zip tie the whole thing together.

I am amazed at the pictures myself. The blind is very hard to see except in one picture I can see the curves across the top.

I think I can do it better but I'm going to need more hands than I have to do it right. Too bad no traditional hunters live near by.

The rest of the folks that hunt around here just ignore the "nut job" that buys a gun tag and never puts his bow down. The guy that's always building something to help his bow hunting without thought of killing deer with a gun. A Real "Wacko" who is ate up with his sticks and strings.

Thanks for the kind words. It feels good to have the things I try to be appreciated whether they work as well as store bought equipment or not.

God bless,Mudd

PS: These type blinds sell commercially for $250 plus shipping, this one is under $70 dollars.
The money I save on equipment I can help support my bow habit.
My name is Mudd and I am a "Bowaholic"!..lol

That's a good lookin' "Casper" blind you've made, Mudd!

I always wondered how picky you had to be about site location as the sun drops down.  Have you found this to be an issue?  Looks great though!

That is the same thing as a ghost blind....but it has a mirror finish on the front to reflect the surroundings.

The bottom has to be smaller than the top in width so the blind leans forward. By doing this, the deers reflection is not seen and the sun does not reflect. I was going to build one last year. I went a far as to buy the best reflective material I could. It  would have to be tied down well and it would had to be set up on a flat spot because of the angle. The size of the panels are critical.
Mudd, how much did you have to experiment to get the right size panel?
Title: Re: My 1st Attempt at "Fake-Front" Blind.
Post by: Mudd on November 22, 2010, 07:03:00 AM
"The Night Stalker" All of my panels are the same width and it works fine.

It's better to be lucky than good because I just guessed at what angle to cut the bottom to make it lean forward when set up.

So far I've used it in the woods and on this open field but both locations are running down hill. It still worked out.

I do tether it forward and back. 4 ties total, 2 on each side, one front and one back.

We've had high winds out of the south for two full days now but the blind is unaffected by them.

It's windy out this morning too and if I can remember to take the camera along I'll take some additional pictures in a new location.

I guess the old saying that "There's more than one way to skin a cat" holds true because none of the "it has to be's" were given any consideration when building mine.

If I don't over think a project it seems to work for me more often than not.

God bless,Mudd

Awesome job Mudd! Can I get a detailed materials list? I have been wanting to try this just to see what happens when near a deer or a herd of squirles, lol.

I took these this morning in a new location. I got some from my side of the blind and took some at different angles from the front.

I put my bad looking decoy in my seat and up as high as I could get her to give some perspective of what you might see if you were a deer coming in or by. In the long shots the white dot is her ear...lol

Those two videos you made for the "Casper" blind ..... are the cat's meow!              How much in materials did it cost you build your Casper Blind?

BTW, I also liked the August and September calendars that were hanging on your wall.      :D
