At the beginning of the month, I once again had the privilage of spending a week chasing whitetails in northern Wisconsin with Schlaggerman, which we've done together for almost thirty years. He's generous enough to host this hunt every year, so I thought I'd share some of the pics taken during my time there.
This is the cabin that he had built on his forty a number of years ago. It's got a generator for electricity and a really efficient wood stove for heat. Refrigeration is Coleman coolers kept outside on the north side of the cabin. It's "roughing it" in a good kind of way.

Looks like a great place. I'd love to have something like that someday.
Let's grab an armful of wood for the stove and head inside...
The view from the front door is a warm, welcome sight. That's Dale's old rosewood Staghorn XP60 that's taken up residency on the wall. With the dry heat from the woodstove I'd be afraid to string it up anymore, but it looks great hanging there. Sorry about the dark photo.

very nice
Wow. What a nice place.
Someday I hope to find a nice little spot to go.
Public is getting me burnt out.
A different look at the inside. Many of the world's problems have been solved here...at least solved to OUR satisfaction.

As you well know, once an animal feels a little pressured, it tends to go nocturnal with it's movements, such as feeding,rutting,bowel,etc...
This photo was taken with the aid of a trail camera set up inside the cabin. The nocturnal feeding Schlaggerman was caught redhanded raiding the doughnut supply.

Home Sweat Home
Lots of oaks and white pines. I'll se if I can find more pics.

Here's a look of me on watch at one of my favorite stands along a creek bottom. It's a nice place to watch a sunrise, listen to the coyotes, and once and awhile, educate a whitetail. That's my bow,"Coyote Ugly", standing guard with me.

It was November and the bucks were laying down a little sign to taunt us. I had a close encounter of the arrow-flinging kind on the third morning, but couldn't close the deal. The nice eight-point lived to chase another doe. Schlaggerman was getting close, but shot opportunities weren't falling into place for him...just yet.

When you want to hunt the swamps up there, it helps to have a little bit of packhorse in you. On this trek, I was using my Lone Wolf treestand as the packframe, while the pack contained treesteps, food&water, and lots of warm clothing. Plus the large insulated boots strapped to the outside. Notice the hip-boots needed to get through the knee-deep water to the high ground? It's all worth it though...

This frosty morning was one of my favorites. As I looked to the east, the rising sun lit up the frost-covered brush like it was made of crystal. Every water droplet sparkled as the light filtered through the trees. It was one of those "close to God" moments that we're bestowed every once and awhile. This picture doesn't do that memory any justice. It was impressive.

Most mornings were below the freezing mark, while the daytime highs were in the upper thirties. Perfect! As this pic shows, the majority of the puddles remained frozen throughout the day. Schlaggerman states that the shaded parts of his driveway thus fall under that oft-talked about location..."where the sun don't shine".

Amazing!

NICE place. A coworker was from Wisconsin and often reminisced of his days hunting on his granddads farm and spending time in the Dells. Been wanting to see it ever since....Phil
As always, the week went by too fast. I had another week of vacation, but I planned on using it in other parts of the state. So, after hunting Friday morning and getting a farewell visit from a fast-moving forky, I loaded up my gear and headed out.
The next night,as I prepared to hunt on the other side of the state, I received a call from a very happy Schlaggerman. One of those close encounters he'd been having finally came to fruition. This buck followed a doe past his stand an hour and a half before dark on November sixth, and paid the price. The bad news is that I wasn't there to help him drag the brute out of the woods. Or is that the good news? Either way, "thanks" again Schlaggerman, and thanks to everyone else here for tagging along. I hope your season was as enjoyable as mine.

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Very nice deer. Great pictures and story sir!
:notworthy: Very nice..PM sent
That's a great buck Dale! Proof once again that deer are in serious trouble when they get too close to you.
Thanks for the story a,d puics Knbobby. Northern WI is a special kind of place. Not always a lot of deer, but that just means every one taken is well earned. And a few do get a chance to grow up!

Great pix Knobby  KY :archer: Wow awsome buck, I didn't go to page 2 before commenting, congrats!!!
Thanks for the compliments. That IS a Black Widow in Dale's hand. He's got a bunch of them and they've been very good to him. Honestly, he was hunting with his DAS because he's got a camera attachment for it. Toward the end of my week there, I told Dale it was time to haul his Widow back out and get serious...it's worked for him in the past. Kind of eerie the way it happens for him
Awesome pics and story Gary. Great buck Dale. That cabin is awesome. I returned your PM Gary.
cool pics and Gary congrats on the deer Dale!
Looks like those donuts paid off in aces.. Thanks for letting us tag along...
nice
Congrates on the beautiful buck, Dale. Nice pics and story Knobby. But where are the pics of your buck?
Double O, scroll down the page to "final weekend whitetail buck". The pic is on that thread.
Great job on the pictorial story Gary. I just knew that donut picture was going to come back to haunt me. Well if the whole truth would be known... Gary found out I was going to be hunting with the Widow on Saturday and he jumped ship sometime during the middle of the night so he wouldn't have to drag the bugger out. I don't dare help him with the dragging duties, you know, with my bad back and all! As usual we had a great time in the rutting woods. After spending more than 60 hours in a treestand over the course of the week it takes a while to get healed up from "bleacher butt". The saddest time of the year is closing up deer camp for another year. However, we're both starting to pack for Wyoming next September. Geez, that's a long way off.
Congrats Dale. Good story knobby.
Very cool. Great story and nice buck.
Very good buck Dale. GOOD FOR YOU. I couldn't be happier! Mike
I'll bet it is quiet at the cabin.. Beautiful!

Pretty cool and congrats!
Great looking camp and nice buck.
Thanks for sharing!
I grew up in Delafield (SE Wisconsin). I remember going up north somewhere when I was a kid and bowhunting w/ a friend and his dad. I want to say it was BlackRiver Falls? Anyhow, it's pretty up there and I would love to get back some day. Thanks for sharing.
So, Schlagger, how'd you end up getting it out of the woods without him there to help? Is that a new part of the Mayor's duties?
nice
Thanks for posting Gary. Congrats on a very nice buck Dale.
Very nice, can I ask you were you purchased the hat and face mask?
Niiice!Thanks for sharing.
Nice pics looks like you have a wonderful place.
Stone Knife, the cap and face mask were made and sold by Winona Mills in Minnesota, which is no longer in business. Every once and a while some of their camo shows up in the classifieds.
Really enjoyed your story and pictures...It's sometimes hard to get in the hunting mode without a good supply of doughnuts. As a fellow hunter with a cabin in the Wisconsin woods, I can really relate to your fun!
