Title: New to traditional archery
Post by: JamesJamison on November 20, 2010, 07:52:00 PM
Hello everyone, just got on this site and I am enjoying all the good reading.

Though I've hunted with compound bows for the past 25 years, and racked up a big number of whitetails, I had grown bored of knocking deer out about anytime I wanted.  I actually put my bow up for the past 2 seasons.  No challenge.

I've spoken with Dean Torges several times, mainly due to both of us hunting small game with Mountain Curs, and he recommended I get in touch with Jim Reynolds at Thunderstick Archery, so somewhere around March, I'll have a new Thunderstick 3 longbow, and all summer to practice up for deer season.

I am enjoying this site.

Hey James while you are waiting on the bow. Build yourself a bow rack. Your gon-A need it. For some unknown reason ya can not just have one, or two, or three.

James,
Welcome.  I switched to traditional a few years ago and my hunting and outdoor enjoyment is so much greater.  You'll learn alot from this site.

You are gonna have a blast with this "trad stuff". Best part is the learning curve ahead of you. Try to read as much as ya can about shooting trad. Get hold of some dvd's or video tapes also. The best is to go to a few trad shoots and learn from others.

Best Of Luck & Welcome Aboard!

Welcome...a word of advice.  Stay away from the classified section.  If anyone posts about a new bow, don't click on that thread!   :campfire:

Hawk4570, I am in Henry Co. Ky.

I look forward to getting the new bow, hoped to shoot it all winter, then through next summer, so I would be shooting decently by deer season but I won't be getting it until March.  If I could find some sort of cheap long bow to practice with until then, I would do that but I don't want to spend another 200 or so just as a temporary fix.

I still have to find a quiver, tab, arm gaurd, and figure out what type arrows to get.

Good to have you James. I'm in Lawrenceburg, KY. I switched from compounds this year after having shot compounds since 1975. I'm still a fan of compounds with all the bells and whistles, but don't think I'll hunt with them in KY again. I love the recurves!  There are a lot of KY folks perusing this site.

Welcome James, I have a farm in Henry County. Good to have you here. I as you are doing made the switch quit a few years ago for the exact same reasons. You will now thoroughly enjoy your time afield.

I'm looking forward to getting into it.

KentukcyTJ, maybe we can get together this coming year and shoot some.  I'm sure I'll be able to use any and all tips on instinctive shooting.  And by the way, if you like to squirrel or coon hunt, you can give me a shout soon as deer gun season goes out, I have a couple of fine Mt. Cur squirrel/coon dogs, and you're welcome to make a round with me.
