Title: Looking for feedback on feather wear, Help!
Post by: ABBIBOY on November 20, 2010, 04:21:00 PM
I am getting a lot of wear on the down feather on my arrows. Both other feathers hold up fine but as you can see in the photo the down feather takes a beating quickly. I know that this feather is the one that rubs against the shelf the most but my other buddies don't have this problem. I'm shooting a Schafer 50# FF with trueflite feathers 5.5 high backs and what I beleive they call a Bear rug rest with plate.

Any ideas????????

Maybe brace height is to low? Shelf material my be to high for that high back feather or maybe the feather is to high for that shelf material. Arrow may be weak and flexing quiet a bit before leaving the string. When I use a calf hair rest or leather rest I don't see this. I have not used bear rug rest. I had a velcro type rest that did this to my arrows.

May try raising nock point a smidge. Others with more knowledge will chime in after a bit. Good luck!

Slo-mo vids of RW Helicals off RH bow shelfs convinced me to switch all my fletched arrows to RW I make myself. Conclusion; RW helicals contact less of the shelf than LW or straight. Even shot w/cock feather in. Possibly no discernable flight difference; however, contact means friction IMO. Try it & see what happens. E-mail for addt'l options. Good ideas above also.

Raising the nock point will probably get the most votes.  That's what I would do.

Straitera,  do you have a link to that vid?

Excessive fletching wear like that is possibly an indication of too stiff a spine shaft.

To stiff or brace check brace first and if it continues guess what its the spine.

If everything is right, the feather will not touch at all as it passes by the shelf. It is a spine issue. Too low a nock point will show a kick in flight. Feather wear, but good flight can be an indication of a tad stiff.

Try a heavier head.

Pretty arrows!

check all three, my guess is you are about 1/8" low on your knock point.

I had the exact same thing, I changed from velcro rest to  a light felt material and rotated my feathers clockwise by turning my nock, so far so good but that was with LW feathers.  I am going to try RW feathers I had never heard those are better for a right handed set up, hope this helps....DB
