I have a brand new Mohawk, 53# at 28 or roughly 50# at my draw length of 27+/-. Bowyer recommends 8 gr per pound of draw weight so I should be shooting a 400 grain arrow, minimum.
I have some 31" long ICS Bowhunter 500's which weigh 7.3 gpi and the local archery store told they didn't need to be cut. I shoot a 120-125 Elk Mountain Phanton which is the same BH as the Muzzy Phantom. I don't know the weight of the insert, but it's not heavy, probably some standard insert for targets. So my 31" arrows weigh 226.3 gr and the Phantom adds 125 max for a total weight of 351 grains +/-. These arrows shoot really well from my 50# Kodiak Hunter, but now so well from my Mohawk.
I'd love to be shooting a heavy arrow and I'm not accustomed to such long arrows and I'm not at all partial to carbon. So I'm curious to know what length and what arrow I should be shooting from this Mohawk?
The current reply here will include a note to download the spine cal thingie...
I shoot Arrow Dynamics Nitro lites with some weight. (145 gr point eithe steel or alu BH insert and alu. in shaft insert. I use 3 5.5" feathers) AD's also come in a "trad lite" which has more weight but maintains spine. (both have a 350 deflection) The Stinger yellow lettering is 6.7 gr/inch, the trad Lites are 9.3 gr/inch
I do not do all the calc stuff as I find these arrows shoot well for me in my poundage and draw area of 45-50# at a 29" arrow.
As an ate up wood arrow guy, I'm going to suggest wood, probably douglas fir. I believe the 8 gpp is his recommended minimum and you could go to 10 gpp without any issues and your bow will push them just fine. A 28" arrow will be great with your 27" draw. I really like heavier points, 160+ gr, and believe they shoot and perform better than lighter points. What spine you need will depend mostly on how deep the shelf is cut; the deeper it is cut the stiffer the needed spine.
Why not cut off a lot of that extra shaft then weight your front up either with a heavy insert or a heavy broadhead.
Good Shooting,
Craig
