Title: Need bow refinishing reccommendations
Post by: Mudd on November 18, 2010, 05:25:00 AM
I am getting a bow I would like to have refinished and some weight taken off.

If you have had a good experience with someone and would like to give them credit and a recommendation I'd sure love to read about them and your experience.

Thanks in advance!!

God bless,Mudd

PS: I'm sure they will appreciate the compliment and I'll appreciate the chance to use them.

Mudd, Rich Lopez ( Droptine 59 ) has refinidhed a couple of Bear Archery bows for me. I've seen bows refinished by BowDoc and Whip all looked good as new.

I sent all 3 an e-mail with pictures of my bow along with the details of what I'd like to get done and asking for an estimate of costs.

I'll be excited to hear back from them.

Thank you!!

God bless,Mudd

PS: Dang I wish I had thought to ask about maybe just dipping it ASAT. Is dipping an alternative to refinishing?

Two Tracks refinished a bow for me I was well pleased.
You will get your bow back in weeks not months.

I hope this isn't too redundant but I was afraid the question I asked earlier would get missed.

Is dipping an alternative to refinishing? and can it be used when weight has been taken off the bow in lieu of finish?

God bless,Mudd

I'm just finishing up doing one on my own.  I can tell you if you pay less than $120 for a refinishing you got a deal. I don't know about the weight reduction.  That involves retillering and likely an epoxy coat of the limbs.

MAN!  It is near impossible to get a dripless, smooth and even finish with all the curves and edges of a riser.  I used to work professionally for a cabinetmaker as the sander/finisher and have done several gunstocks.  A urethane finish is difficult (so thick) compared to an oil finish, and the matte finish I am using even more so!  I thought it would be easier than a gloss.  Not so!

On the other hand, I have not spent a cent on materials - just using what I had around - and it is finally looking suitable.  I took great care to leave the original markings and blend in around them.  I sanded down my first two coats back to bare wood (except in the marked area).  At least that filled the wood pores well.  Worst case if you screw up the finish trying it yourself THEN you can send it to a pro.  Same price.

I think I would recommend a spray finish.  I see in the current Traditional Bowhunter there is an article and his came out pretty good.

You could dip, but how much finish would it take to fill a container that the  bow could be dipped into?  Gallons?

Mudd,

I would give Big Jim a call on the dip. I know he roughs up the finish a bit prior to dipping. He told me its as durable as any wood finish. Looks real nice too. Good luck.

Mudd- After we camo dip, we spray two coats of protective finnish on the bow. Works well and is tougher than most bow finishes on the market.

thanks,bigjim
