The nocks on my arrows were definitely too tight, so I filed them down. The problem is, I mightve filed a couple of them down too much. They stay on the string until I lightly tap the string and then they dislodge. Is it possible to damage the bow if they're filed down too much thus making them too loose (by maybe creating a dry-fire-like situation)?
im not sure if it would hurt your bow or not. i myself would spend 12 bucks and get another 100 nocks. it cant hurt having extra
Yes you can overfile your nocks, and yes you can damage your bow (or at the very least scare the crap out of yourself if you have one to explode)!
If they are to loose for you.you can serve a double knock point,or replace those nocks. A dry fire can occur if it falls of the string. The question is do you want to take that chance?
I wouldn't think twice abgout replacing the nocks or replace the serving or the string.
Sounds to me from your description that the fit is perfect.
What you described is exactly how I like mine :dunno:
I mean, as long as they're flyin' off the string and hittin' the target, no damage will be done to the bow right?

X2 I have them so they are just tight enough to hang on the string when the bow is rotated and the arrow faces the turf.
Cheers

Absolutely not

This is exactly what they are.
Thanks very much for the feedback guys. I think I'll use 'em for now, and it's helpful to pick up the tips!
They should hang the arrow but let it fall if you tap the bow.
Next time, instead of filing, warm a cup of water in the microwave and press a string-sized nail into the nock after it has been held in the hot water for a few seconds.
I would put on new knocks. i lost a self bow to a self knock that split down the middle on me. I have shot plastic knocks that were split but unnoticed. the part about scaring the crap out of you is an understatement. i would hate to think of it happening when i was shooting at a critter. I want mine to audably snap on so i am damned sure they are on good.
Better if the nock is too loose than if it's too tight. Too loose won't affect accuracy, too tight will!!!!
Like other have said, hold bow with nocked arrow so arrow head is pointed down. Arrow should stay on the string until you lightly tap string, then it should fall off. If not, nock is too tight.
If you go a little too far in the filing you can heat the nock in HOT water and squeeze it back together a bit. Just be sure not to overheat the glue.
problem with too loose is what happened to me this spring black bear hunting. My best flying arrow was a touch looser then the rest for some reason and I dont file my nocks, dont touch them at all. First show the arrow went straight down. Luckily I didnt destroy a bow in the process!
I wouldnt file your nocks if you can help it. I'd learn to serve and build strings and build it to fit your nocks the way you like them too!
I still have that arrow but replaced the nock with a new one. Dunno if I got bear fever and finger pinched the nock to the point it fell off the string on the draw or really what happened. Either way it'll scare the living crap out of ya to say the least and as in my case likely happen at the most inopportune time. Best case you'll learn from it..worst case you'll have a busted limb up side the face.

I can't say why yours split down the middle, but how tight they grip the serving and that they split are two different issues I think. Not saying this happened to you, but when sanding a nock do not get into the bottom of it with the file/sandpaper or whatever. For sure that would weaken the nock in a spot where it needs to be strongest.

This is why I decided to file them a bit. I think that since filing them, my accuracy has increased a bit too.
I like the hot water idea. Will have to try that!
just curious why not reserve it with the right serving material so it fits?
I too file my nocks for a loose fit. Just be very careful that you don't create a weak spot with a sharp angle at the throat of the nock.
Breaking a nock at full draw can be as bad as having the arrow fall off.
Doubt you;ll hurt the bow unless your nocks break while shooting.
