Title: Newfoundland/Labrador Caribou hunts no more...
Post by: Slasher on November 16, 2010, 08:01:00 AM
Hey hunters, been researching and checking into a hunt and went back to the 3rivers lodge website and saw this.....

"The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador has suspended the outfitter's caribou hunt in
their Province indefinitely.  Non-resident hunters will no longer be allowed to purchase
license and tags.  Please check in with our "Recent News"  blog for updates as
they become available to us.  Thank you.  Three Rivers Lodge"

News of St George Caribou conservation plan (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2010/11/11/caribou-hunt-outfitters-111.html)

What happened???

This is very sad,I hope this will be able to restore the caribou number.I don't know the reasons for this decline but we as hunters must protect the games when endangered.

That sucks! I was planning on going with them in a few years since I've only heard good things from them. I went to Quebec twice and won't go there again.

Sad indeed, one of my dream hunts. It was the only place in the world with a hunt able population of woodland caribou. I hope they recover their numbers

We had a great hunt up there a few years back, I'm sorry to hear this, I was considering a return trip.

Always wanted to go, like the idea of spot and stalk instead of the tundra type hunt with mass migration. Maybe it will come back!

That will teach me to put things off.  I have wanted to do this for about 10 years, and look where thinking about it got me.

That is sad. What beautiful country and people.

But my thoughts were the population dropped 90% in the last 17 years. I hope thats a misprint. So at some point during that time the folks overseeing the George River heard should have regconized a problem and implemented a smaller and steady cut back on the hunting of the heard in stead of slamming the door shut.

Of course being in the dark I can only assume (yea I know I am) without viewing the data tables and second guessing the management practices.

Hope it turns around quickly for all concerned.

when I was there in 2005 and we didnt see any animal in Lab they thought the migration had just taken a left turn somewhere. They had to fly us way up in Quebec to find some. when i was in NF in 2004 i saw ONE caribou in a full weeks hunt.

Wow 90% if that is correct, I don't see how they will save the herd.

Does this include the Woodland Bou in Newfoundland?  I heard that herd was in trouble too.

thats what they get for overhunting it..just like every other species of game or fish.mismanagement...wake up people and keep track of things...wonder if the wolf population might all of a sudden take a 90% dive.  :bigsmyl:

Unfortunately this happens easily when governments realize animals are worth money. Then it becomes more about tags being worth money and suddenly the only numbers that matter are the green ones and not the living ones.

There should always be a good balance!  Unfortunately when as a hunter you assume a population is healthy you have no reason to stop hunting an animal.  Hunters however, when educated about a population have the responsibility to allow populations to recover.
