I had the great pleasure to hunt with my dad on my cousins land in the TX Hill Country this weekend.

The evenings were filled with the scent and beauty of crackling cedar wood fires

and the aromas of fine grub on the pit.

During my first evening sit, a Small Game Hunt broke out during my Big Game Hunt when I was caught unaware by Mr. Cottontail.

The following day was uneventful with no game sighted as a cold front had the winds whipping. I moved locations to another natural ground blind I had cut into the cedar thickets. Here is a view from inside looking out.

At 7:00 am a lone doe appeared at 18yds and fed head on for a few minutes. There is a concept held by Native American Indians that the animal offers itself to the hunter, and what she did next was as good an example of that as I have ever seen. As if upon command of me wishing her to give me a shot, she turned broadside and looked the other way and held that pose. After I released I saw the arrow strike just up the front leg but only penetrate to about 1/2 of the shaft. She ran low and fast away and I saw her break off my arrow as she passed a cedar about 15yds away. My plan was to wait for 30 minutes and take up the trail but 15 was all I could muster and snuck up to take a look at my arrow. Here is what I found on my way there.

I realized that I had never appreciated the beauty of the Hill Country rocks till I saw how they accentuated a bloodtrail.

Seventy yards down the trail things got even prettier.

Penetration was limited by the Snuffer burying in the opposite shoulder after taking out both lungs and the aorta. It was a great trip and best of all I got to share it with my dad who just celebrated his 76th Birthday!

Nice! I don't know what looks better, the doe or the food on the grill
What a great experience. Congrats and thank you for sharing a special moment in great story and pics.
The Hill Country is a truly magical place. That limestone can be a bugger but then whats under the surface is what holds all the water for San Antonio and south.
I would have loved to have seen it befor all the cedar, goats and sheep, when it was live oaks, Spanish oaks and grass.
I am very familure with the Boerne, Sisterdale, Comfort area.
Great deer and great story... You and your Dad have a real experience to share
