I settled into my stand Saturday morning and at first light I noticed a redtailed hawk sitting on a branch about 4 foot off the ground 20 yards from me. Kind of odd I thought but I just watched him for the next hour. At one point he jumped down on the ground behind a tree, so I forgot about him as a few deer moved through. An hour later I caught movement and he was walking through some low grass in the woods hunting for field mice....again, pretty odd I thought.
On my way out as I walking along the edge of the alalpha field and this same hawk stood up and spread his wings, mouth open about 10 feet from me. He made no attempt to fly, just stand and fight. I approached him to about 4 feet and noticed his wing was broken. My wife and daughter came over and we took some photos and called a local bird rescue. About 2 hours later a volunteer came and we helped catch him, which was fairly easy as he didn't put up much of a fight....maybe because he had a sheet over his head :( . I was told he seemed very weak and was possibly starving.
The volunteer was fantastic. We were told his wing would be set that afternoon and they'd nurse him back to health over the next several weeks. She said they'd give us a call when he was ready to go and they'd bring him back to the same spot and we could release him. Pretty cool stuff.... :clapper: Hats off to Tri-State Bird rescue in Delaware!

Wow, what a great response from you folks!
I've always enjoyed watching the hawks and occassional eagles around home. This was a big event for the family and we spent 2 1/2 hours waiting for the bird rescue. We were afraid to leave him for fear of foxes or just not being able to find him again. Here's a few more photos. To be honest he was totally relaxed and some of the photos I took I was laying in the alphalfa no more than 2 foot away!

Beautiful bird & I hope he recovers fully.

Just got some bad news folks. I called the bird rescue to check to see how everything was going. Unfortunately the injuries were more severe than just his wing and they had to put him down. I hunt right next to a major highway and often times they get his hit coming down to catch mice in the median.
Sad day...especially breaking the news to my daughter.
-
Neat!
On morning I arrived to a ground blind I had in place well before sunrise. As dawn came I was sitting mostly still and watching the area. Then I noticed a tree about 15 feet from me had eyes. I about filled my drawers! It was a great horned owl about 8 feet off the ground on a low branch and he stayed there half-an-hour, giving me the eye occasionally but otherwise just doing what I was doing. Eventually he flew off without a sound.
Magnificent. A pity the hawk you found came to such an end.

That's very sad to learn. Raptors are amazing and their comeback, due to strong federal legislation, has been a success story that ranks among the best.
You did the right thing by calling the the rescue. The hawk was lost but certainly not the effort or the positive effect of your act upon those on this blog. All life is precious.

So sorry that this one couldn't make it. I hope they will use his parts for education and imping damaged feathers on living hawks. Two good spirits met when you found him and called him in, and you got to meet more good folks when they rescued him. The bird was spared a lingering and horrifying death, so it seems like a good day's work to me.
I hate seeing the critters on the side of the road. I once found two great horned owls within a hundred feet of each other outside of Manassas.
Why is it that we have to go so damn fast?

Good story Tim. Too bad he didn't make it, but you have the satsifaction of knowing you did the right thing by trying to help.
Thanks for sharing the pictures and the story.

Well, you can see that some folks don't read through a thread before running to the end to post  . Tim sorry about the little guy not making it, but your concern for him/her is truly impressive. Many folks have no idea how or why we who hunt can at the same time be so concerned about the welfare of wild animals. Your spirit shows how we do care. Thanks.

Cool Tim
Same thing happened last winter, my friends son came through the front door with a Cream chested hawk, commonly mistaken for red tails. also had a broken wing. and put up no resistance. The local falconer chapter came and said they would try to nurse it back to health. we found this bird next to the NYS thruway.
-
You know what the sad thing is??? Because we hunt and do kill animals, many believe we kill everything we meet. They never see the things we do to help wildlife-Tim's helping a hawk, helping a deer on the ice, moving a turtle out of the road, etc. Just a wee bit frustrating!!!
-
Real nice Tim.
-
Yessir that IS neat!
-
-
You tried to help and that's better than what he would have faced out there. Nature is pretty nasty. I would have intervened as well.
-
Great story and even a greater giving and caring response to this birds impending fate.
-
Good on you, Tim!!!

Great job, hope to see more pics in a few weeks. Thank you from my family and me.

Great job on your part. alot of guys would have ran a shaft through her and left her for the coyots. I love to hunt with Redtails they are a great bird to train and i have alot of fun in the off season and they don't kill as many rabbits as some guys seem to think they do. Again Thanks
