Just had to share this. Our local paper carried this story on today's Woods and Waters page. Mr. Jones is 89 and hunts with his nine recurve bows at least 15-20 days a year and nearly always gets his deer. He quit tree stand hunting when he turned 75 and is strictly a ground hunter. He claims he has no desire to try a compound. He believes recurves and longbows are graceful but the compounds "Look like a piece of farm machinery." Way to go Claude! He should be an inspiration to us all.

That's good stuff right there! Heck yea, 89 and out there doing it.
We can hope to be like that when and if we reach his age! :notworthy:
That will be me in 70 years! At least I hope :)
Now THAT is cool!
And up to date too. Looks like he's sportin' a Wensel Woodsman on the tip of that arrow. Nice to see him still with it.
I'd like to be capable at that age.
And it looks like he wearing Winona camo too.
Mr. Jones lives just a few miles from my home town of White Sulphur Springs. What an inspiration!!
Thats a GREAT article! AWESOME!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
What an awesome inspiration. I hope at 89 I will still be pulling a traditional bow.

Thanks for posting this David! Would like to read the story.
A definite 89 years young.... WOW
Looks like a Bear bow
A.S. I think I can say you should tell him the Trad Gangers are impressed.
I for one would love to hear some of his stories.
I noticed a guy like that leaving his truck and heading into the woods one day, as I passed by on my way to work. Gives you a real warm feeling for growing old........ and knowing I could still be doing this in 36 years :-)
wow thats inspiring, makes me want to take better care of myself.
A great picture and story. Here's a link to it. I like what they called his "love affair with bowhunting".

What a great article that makes a person feel pretty darn good.
There is a great interview opportunity for TBM.
Bloody cool!
wow that is amazing...
That is just great, Makes me feel not so old at 78, I hope I have that many more years to bow hunt.
I hope by the grace of God I'll be hunt'n with trad gear at that age.
Great story, thanks for sharing. An old friend of mine once told me "You don't quit hunting because you get old, you get old because you quit hunting." This gentleman is a prime example.

Outstanding.
I just read the article. I actually own one of the recurves built by Pocahantas Archery way back when. It's not in shootable condition now, but it's still a neat piece of local bowhunting history!
Keep the passion and the fire burning. A great atticle, and a poster "boy" for all of us.
Now that's good stuff. Hope I am able to hunt at that age.
I hope I am hunting at that age too. Makes you want to take better care of yourself. What an inspiration.
:campfire:
I sent an email to John McCoy (author of the article) asking him to wish Mr. Jones happy hunting and to let Claude know there are still a few of us around.
Here is a link to Mr. McCoy's email address.

Mr. McCoy
Please pass on my happy hunting wishes to Mr. Claude Jones. Your article "Bow hunting the hard way" has reached the internet community of traditional bowhunters known as Trad Gang. http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=096318;p=1 This internet community of 25000+ is dedicated solely to traditional bow hunters who take great pride in "hunting the hard way." Mr. Jones may like to know, in a world of high tech hunting gadgets; there are still a few of us roaming the woods that share his passion for the beauty and simplicity of the traditional bow. The story of Mr. Jones hunting with traditional gear at the age of 89 has given great inspiration to me and many others. Here's to you Claude...go get'em brother!
