I'm now shooting my PCH in prep for the late deer season, and TX deer hunt. I've put down the longbows for now. I bought the BW PCH just for deer hunting as I get into some tight trees from time to time and also some pop ups and tight ground blinds.
Anyhow, being a overwhelming majority longbow shooter, I like my bows quiet. I usually put my Hush Puppies at the 1/4 position on longbows, and at the 1/3 position on recurves and use BowHush....well....I was trying a few things with my PCH to try and get it longbow quiet....and I dang near got it there.....by going against the norm for me.
I moved the Hush Puppies from the 1/3rd to the 1/4th position...and there was a big difference in what I now 'wasn't' hearing. I also have removed SIX strands from each Puppy so....now I have a quieter bow and LESS silencer material. I'm going to play a little more and get a measurement from last string contact where its the quietest. BTW, the PCH is 56"s.
I'm just so tickled I just thought I'd share.....
All I need now is a deer to shoot at. This AM was my last longbow hunt for the year.....let that buck walk by me again with this PCH and I'm gonna bloody it pronto. (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/terry/lukbuk2a.jpg)
Sweet. I got to shoot that bow. Those deer are in big trouble.
I also pulled strands from my hush puppies when I installed them.
Good luck buddy go get em.
Thanks for the info Terry..How do I get some of those Hush Puppies. Would like to try them with my BW longbows
Interesting Terry,
Yeah, my 54" PCH was so loud when I first got it I almost sold it right away, even bowhush and puppies did not help it. Decided to try a new string from SBD and that was the ticket, with the puffs and hush it is quiet as a mouse now. By the way, I put my puppies at the 1/4's on all my bows, Most are recurves but one t/d longbow. I have found that for my style of shooting, the 1/4's is the best spots on the string for me.

Look here the pros at bow hush will get you set up.
BOW HUSH (http://www.bowhush.com/)
Your gonna love huntin with a 56"er. I went from a 62" LB last year to hunting with the 56" this year. Im able to pull of shots that I couldnt even think about last year. That 6" made a big difference for me.
Yeah Danny.....i just assumed my normal o'l placement would be the best.....and really didnt think about much. Just had time today to shoot it again and thought I could improve it. Glad I had the time.......
I also put the puppies at 1/4. I also use 1 puppy cut in half per bow. It's been working great on all of my curves so far.
Thanks for the tip Terry. I scored on my best buck ever yesterday with my PCH. Its quite a story i will post pics and details tomorrow. TD.
Look forward to hearing it Tim...I'll be looking for it...hope to get back into the woods on Wed evening....
Terry,
What longbows are you shooting???
ThunderStick Moabs.....Morrison Cougar....Charlie Lamb Sunbear......ACS one piece(haven't bloodied it yet...haven't had it long but really like it...on par with my others.
the bowstring is another factor for noise, or lack thereof. it might take a different fiber, or fewer strands, or even more strands.
for the very most part, dropping down the strand count of my dyneema strings from 12 to 8, and adding well placed hush puppies has made a *huge* silencing difference for all my longbows - and without a noticeable degrading of bow/arrow performance.
Thanks Terry, for the tip.The 1/4 is where I place my silencers as well, but on my Widows the big difference is been the string.
Terry thanks!
Rob I just put a 8 strand SBD string on my Mohawk. Without silencers it was a bit of a higher frequency twang. But 2 well placed silencers made it wisper quite!!!
Hi Terry. Is this the stock string that came with the widow?
Best to you on your adventures!
Yes....I got a new string from Charlie Lamb...and SBD.....all of them work with the silencers placed as such...I though the string might be the problem....but it was the placement.
I just got use to them being place where I wanted to place them.....and pulled a bonehead by not moving them to start with.
I actually moved them 1st on the SBD...then moved to the stock string and got the same results....and then set up Charlie's string the same way. All is well....with me luck in the AM. :campfire:
Terry, one more thing you could try that I have success with. Take the bow down and apply Vaseline to the friction spots where the limbs join the riser. Also lubricate the stud pin holes and use string wax on the limb bolt threads and under the head where it recesses. This has made a difference with my PSA and MA. Good Luck!
Great tip and thanks for sharing.
Those PCH's are quite appealing. I am disappointed that the 56er is recommended for 28" draw max.
Terry, I also put my string silencers at 1/4. I do it on all my bows. Seems to work best for me.
Thank you Terry, for the response!
Good shootin, too ya!
Steve
On my recurves what I have found works best is to split each set of Hush Puppies so I have 4 smaller ones (2 sets half sized) I put one set on the 1/4's and one set on the 1/3'ds. That with some Bowhush has proven to be the best for all of my recurves. Very very quiet
