Title: Short Recurves?
Post by: DXH on November 12, 2010, 07:08:00 PM
What is the shortest practical recurve you can get and who makes it?
Looking for a bow for treestand hunting

Little Suckling makes two versions of a 44" recurve.  Bear makes a 48" bow.  Two Tracks makes a 50" bow.  Lots of choices out there.  How short do you want to go?  You'll hear mixed reviews from the guys on ease of shooting shorter bows.

I personally haven't had any issues with my 56" bow Lee out of an ameristep blind or a climbing treestand.

Super Mag 48 is a great bow.  If you are going to a shorty, drop about 5 pounds from what you shoot now.  Bill

Don't know if I'd go shorter than my 54" Saluki Turk.

Dan Toelke from montanabows makes a very quiet 52" recurve that is comfotable to shoot even at 29" draw. I have one for blind hunting.

I also just picked up a 1974 Bear Kodiak Magnum 52" for bow fishing as it has a bushing in the riser already.

TWO TRACKS makes a 50" Ambush Bow. I just got one recently and can vouch that it's an excellent bow.

Depends on your draw length, finger diameter and how much finger pinch you can tolerate.

Gene Sanders in Dallas GA makes a very nice bow - the longest one he makes is 60 inches and just a few days ago he told me he couldn't keep up with the demand for his 52 inche bows. Can't find a negative word about 'em. Another couple of guys are building bows and getting help from Gene. You can look at a picture of some of his bows at appalachianbows.com (far right pic is Gene's bows).

I have a Bear Super Magnum. 48" 85# at 28". It shoots real well. I love it for shorter range shots (15-18 yards)

I have a 52" 52 pound Ben Pearson, at my 27" pistol grip draw it is smooth and accurate and faster than my Hill longbow of the same poundage.  I am going to sell it, because my brain does not like pistol grips.  I have to think to much about what I am doing, fine for targets, but unpredictable as to what flinch I will invent with buck fever brewing when hunting.  I thought I wanted a 48" bow, but for me it was slower and touchy.

My 54" Treadway Black
Forest is my go to short bow and shoots pretty much as nice for me as my longer bows. My 1965 Kodiak Magnum is a shooter for me also. But I have a short 27" draw. The guys with longer draws, as mentioned above, might find things quite abit different I have heard.

I haven't seen one of the little sucklings, but I have an original KT44 and it's a great bow.  it is TINY.   I'd be happy with it on deer size game to 20 yards...big pig maybe a bit closer.

I live about 10 minutes from Gene Sanders. He just finished a 52" 3 piece takedown for a shop bow. Absolutely beautiful and will flat out fling an arrow. I want it but need to wait until after the first of the year before I can get the funds. I own 2 of Gene's bows, a 56" and a 54" and couldn't be happier.  A good guy to deal with as well.

Sheep Eater Recurves @ 50" and Shrew Lil' Favorites @ 54" would be an excellent considersation for a short tree stand recurve.  I have a 54" Lil' Favorite and love it!  It is easy to shoot, shoots a wide range of arrow weights and spines and is very accurate in my hands.

Good luck -

Kris

Rodney Wright makes a beautiful and sweet shooting 46" stalker recurve.  Great for blinds or stalking in tight cover.
Stacks at 28" draw. Probably best under 20 yds.
