Title: Ever have a noisy day
Post by: lpcjon2 on November 11, 2010, 06:30:00 AM
Ever had one of those days when no matter what you do you make noise when in the woods? Yesterday I spent the late morning in the woods, with the same gear as I always do and for some reason(probably my attention span)No matter how I walked or moved I made noise. quiver would jiggle and the arrows would tap together or the feathers would rub and make that zipper sound.pine needles on the ground would make a loud raking sound.branches would rub my coat and sound like a window screen ripping.Just sitting in the stand if I turned I would hit something and my bow would bounce the arrow on the limb or hit a branch with dried leaves on it. I hate days like that. Thanks for letting me share

Yes, too many

Too many of those days. Many days like that when I find myself trying too hard and not moving naturally. Cooler dry weather, less foilage and higher levels of anticipation exascerbate the issue.

Some days I must sound like an elephant. Even elephant's can take deer from a stand, they just look strange at that height with the tree bowed.

Yep - it happens.  Here's a snippet from my 20-Nov-09 hunting journal...

Second, this morning I discovered I have a rare and mysterious ability. Modesty prevents me from calling it a 'super power' but only barely. Apparently, I've been gifted with the ability to step on and break every stick in the woods between my car and my hiding spot. This *could* be a basis for a great business. This is how it would work: you tell me where you plan to hunt and where you plan to park, and for a modest fee I'll walk in (in the dark, even) and pre-break every stick in your area, thus making the footing quieter for you. After an application of this service, you should be able to wear moon boots and still move as quietly as a delicate kitten tiptoeing across a fleece comforter on a goose down bed.

I yeah, that's the days I call myself "Fumbelina" and that's usually when I just sit still and don't touch anything unless I have to.

Consider yourself lucky to have pine needles to walk on, try stalking around through ankle deep dry leaves when there's been no rain for almost 2 months! It's like walking on tin foil and peanut brittle. Impossible to sneak up on a deer so you just have to pick a spot, stay put, and hope for the best.
We are at least 3" below normal already for the months of September, October, and now going into November. Usually by this time of year it's a muddy mess during deer season, but not this year...it's a dust bowl.

GK- That's funny right there, you write very well. Keep it up.

I sure do. Sometimes I'm just not on my game. Thats usually the day I bump into a good buck.

I break sticks get my foot caught in the only vine for miles stumble and some occasions even trip. On some occasions in the dark I seem to attract Honey Locust thorns (the 2 to 3 inch type) to different parts of my body. I  try to cover up my scream by making it sound like a coyote howling though.

Those days have taught me SO much about my hunting set up. I learned that a bow quiver is the only way to go, like it or not. I learned that wool outside is the only way to go, like it or not.  I learned to travel very light, like it or not. These are just my findings and are what I think I need to use. Not saying its right for all! Dont get me wrong, I still have a few noisey days still! Just not quite as many as I used to.

When I know I'm being noisy...  I sit down. Relax, get back up and slow things down.
I always tell myself if I'm noisy I'm going too fast.
