This is my 2010 buck (we only get one in Montana). He was chasing a doe and came by my stand at fifteen yards, I missed shooting over his back. Two minutes later he came back following the same doe at ten yards and I double lunged him. It was an easy recovery, he went a total fifty yards after being hit, out thirty and then came back twenty, falling twenty yards from my stand. He was a fighter. On the left side: the G-2 was completely busted off, was missing an inch on the G-3, and half inch on the G-4. On the right side the G-4 was missing a couple of inches. He had been skewered behind the right eye, behind the right jaw, and on both sides of the neck.
I used Max, my 58# osage selfbow, 29 1/2" AD Trad Lites, and 220 grain four blade Muzzy Phantoms.

Beautiful buck, Walt. I guess your story is proof that a miss doesn't necessarily mean the end of the encounter! Congratulations on following through, and on a fine selfbow trophy!!

No kidding, I was hunting in 65 degrees yesterday and was trying to keep out of the sun while on stand!
Congrats Walt, great buck, story, and pics! Seems like the best hunts always have a bit of drama to them.
Too cool! Excellent job on a nice buck with a primitive bow. :notworthy:

Relly nice buck Walt! Thanks for posting.
great buck and pics walt - nice going
Hunting and taking a deer in the snow has always been a great experience.
Great job and thanks for including me on the hunt.
Great deer Walt! Way to buckle down on the second chance.
Usually I can stay kind of in control until I take a shot. But then my body falls apart and I turn into a quivering mess. I would have probably been shaking so bad I don't know if I could get a second arrow on the string.
Congratulations!
Nice buck Walt! I love the first picture. Congrats to ya.
Nice buck Walt......love seeing your kills with selfbows.
David

 OUTSTANDING !!!!!
Hi Walt, way to stick with it. Did you make the bow? That is very cool to have done it with a selfbow. Have you used that on any cats?
Congrats on a fine Buck!
WAY TO GO :campfire:
Great buck indeed! And great self bow trophy!
Thanks for the compliments. He will gross around 125 and is my biggest with a selfbow. We finally got snow this past week and it seems to have kicked in the rut, the bucks are just starting to cruise my hunting areas. This buck had given me several opportunities before I missed him with the first arrow and I really did not intend to take him until he gave me the fifth or sixth opportunity. Having passed on three larger bucks in the past week (one at twelve yards 30 minutes earlier) and a five-day hunt on the Milk River scheduled for next week, I keep wondering why I took him. Something in my head said this is the one and I listened for a change....I still don't know why. ;)
Good buck! :clapper: :clapper:
Congrats, love the color of the rack.

Congrats! That's a good looking buck. It looks like it might be a tad colder out there than it is in Jersey right now.

Congrats Walt
Nice Buck :clapper: :clapper:
Congrats! I am glad someone is getting some hunting done. We bought a house and moved so all I have accomplished is unpacking but now we have a place we can shoot in the yard again. Joseph
Good deer Walt!
Mike
That's my kind of hunting, sir!
Osage bow, snow, and one fine looking deer!
Great hunt Walt!
Way to go Walt. Great deer with a great bow.
Wish we had some of that white stuff here, I would even settle for something less than 50 degrees. 65-70 the last 3 days has pretty much stopped any daytime deer movement after 9:00 a.m. That's my experience in Ohio this week.
Excellent all the way 'round.Congrats!
Nice buck Walt! You got more patience than I do if you passed on one bigger. I can let the smaller ones go but if it's a 125 class or bigger I'm lettin her fly.
Congrats!
Stiks
Nice buck, snow hunting already. Cool in more way than one.
Good Stuff Walt! CONGRATS on a really nice deer!
Congrats Walt, that is a very nice buck!
Travis
Great buck Walt. All that snow makes me jealous. There is just something special about a hunt in the snow. Congratulations.
You should have warned us about the snow...I ain`t ready for that yet.
I love a good fight, so I can relate to the buck...he is awesome!!!
The picture is fantastic. The only way to get that kind of lighting is with snow.
Happy day Walt...many happy returns!
Thats awesome!fine looking buck,Thanks for sharing.
Tim - "Snow already? My thoughts are; It's abut time we got some snow, it came late this year.
Snag - No kitties with this bow, just 6-8 eight deer and a bison.
Everybody, thanks again for the complements. I do love hunting in the snow, it absorbs many of the sounds and makes for a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing hunt. Also, it can make a bad photographer like myself look decent.
I received few of questions regarding how the back of the bow was camo-ed, so here is how it was done: Finished the bow with eight-ten coasts of tru-oil, hunted with it for a couple of years and decided it was to shinny after spooking a couple of critters (at times I'm a slow learner). I spray painted the back with the cheapest (99 cents) flat black paint I could find, then five minutes later took 220 grit sand paper to the newly applied paint until it looked good and I thought would work. Note, though I did rough up the tru-oil, I did not sand trough the finish.
