anyone still use a straight ended longbow?
with all the choices these days, why?
justin
Justin,
Define Straight Ended for me? Are you talking "Hill Style"? If so, I love mine.
There is nothing like the hand shock and slow speed of the classic D shape.
Matt
Started with one as a kid and will go out with one of my Miller, Schulz or one I built. I think there are a fair number of shooters that still carry the traditional style longbow, they aren't about to go out.
I love 'em... shot a whole bunch of them then started building them. I like that they're easy to tiller and to get a very smooth draw from. Also light and quiet. What's not to like?
Yes sir, still shooting them!
don't really shoot anything else...Millers, Hills and Belchers... I have had prety much every style and make going over the years . I am more accurate with my straight sticks and just enjoy shooting them more than anything other style of bow .
Durable , easy to carry point and very forgiving...
If you mean a Hill style bow then yes. Why? Why not? I like my Hill Halfbreed and enjoy hunting with it.
Why do you shoot whatever you shoot?
I feel like I can hear a noise difference between a moderately R/D longbow and a aggresively R/D longbow. With my Fox Longbow it looks like it has no R/D when braced, but it has a little. I like it alot. More R/D may be faster, but I'm not a speed freak, I'm a quiet freak.
Hill "Half Breed"
Well, as someone once said, "If I have to explain it you wouldn't understand." Pretty well sums it up for me. There's nothing like a simple longbow for dependability, easy pointing, and forgiveness. Isn't trad archery supposed to be about simplicity? One of life's simple pleasures for me.
I shoot Hill longbows and have for years. I was just curious about what others are shooting. Not about to switch either.

Well, I like lots of different bows, and although it's been a few months since I shot a D, I still do from time-to-time, and occasionally hunt with them (Redman or Wesley Special).
My Hills are just the most fun to shoot.
Yes I still enjoy shooting my HH Half Breed, they are great shooting bows and love the classis D-shape.
I have a Jerry Hill Stalker Deluxe, Never heard a good thing about them..........I really like mine!! It's 68" 50# @ 28" and is silent when shot!
Yep, I love Hills. There are faster bows, there are bows with less hand shock, but none of the bows - for this shooter - are as fun to shoot or feel as good. That Traditional Feel is just so good.
I have a Howard Hill Badger that is highly RD. It feels smooth and shoots great. But, whenever I go out and practise I still take a D Shape Hill along to shoot as well.
This are my Hill bows.
Howard Hill Half Breed 66" 85# at 28"
Howard Hill Wesley Special 66" 80# at 28"
Howard Hill Black Badger 62" 66# at 28"
I've thought about getting a Hill bow, but most guys who hunt with them seem to have fairly heavy bows, like Raging Water. With my short draw and low weight, I'm thinking that I could shoot a Hill and then run to the target by the time the arrow gets there. It still might be fun for 3D and stump shooting. Pup
Why do some guys use bamboo fly rods when there is fiberglass, graphite, boron, titanium available?
In all honesty, my Hills are a little slower that other bows but they cast a mean arrow.
Don't let that D Shape slower speed keep you from enjoying a Hill. Buy a one used, cheap, and you will be a convert.

Hill style long bow for me. Forever.
Frank San Marco and yew longbow by Ed Blankinship.
Speed has been debated for ever, when you shoot 12-20 yards how fast does it have be. My "D" shaped longbow is fast enough. If you shot a heavy arrow speed becomes a non factor. Hill or Hill style are great fun and nothing looks cooler than a back quiver full of woodies and a straight longbow.
I shoot an Apex Predator "Cumberland" ("D" shaped) longbow and an osage selfbow (which, of course, is "D" shaped as well).
"Why - with all the other choices...?", you ask? For the same reasons all of us here aren't shooting compound bows! :archer:

Very true statement!
I'm down to 4 bows and 3 of them are Hills. I have a Maddog recurve being built but, I am thinking of going primarily to using my Hills for hunting after this season. Just had to show 2 of them:

I`m shooting a Mohawk now and love it but I really like them Hill bows too.I see no disadvantage to shooting one and they are a pleasure to shoot. I have to admit I like the Mohawk...better.RC
There is NOTHING WRONG with straight end longbows. I have a hill style from a local bowyer that I've kept for 18 yrs now. Shoots quiet as a mouse and not all that slow depending on what arrow I use.
As for the 'speed' ... I have taken a bunch of critters with my straight end bows . The bows are silent and accurate ...that is all I need. Also i don't use 'heavy bows ' ... I pull about 50-52# at my 27" and still prefer the longer bows of 66" - 68 ". Compared to most ny bows are probably slow But I have no intention of changing. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Archery is a very personal thing and as Dave said " if you have to ask you wouldn't understand...
1. Super quiet--no need to put junk on your string
2. Super light
3. Quick to point, quick to target (for me, anyway)
I really appreciate how quiet they are. They shoot better for me than the other designs. Quiet fast enough for me and shoot where I look.
