I've always hunted on the ground and been successful (got my first compound bowkill from a treestand though). But I gotta say, once I reached fifty my knees started screaming. I can't stand still and I can't kneel for long so I tried a small folding beachchair for a seat. It puts me too low. Anyone here use a Tree Seat?(the kind 3Rivers sells)It looks exactly what I need. Phil
I have a strap on style tree seat thats not bad at all, just dont strap it to a huge tree. You still need the draw room with your string arm.And get some pruning sheers for those low limbs.I also use a tripod style seat that fold up and I love that.
I saw the neatest tree seat while at the Ohio trad hunt. It was a pole with duck feet, top and bottom. The bottom so it wouldn't sink into the ground and the top so it would cradle the tree. It leaned on the tree at a angle and the seat was at an angle too so it would be level when sitting on it. Comfortable and stable. I wish'd I had taken a picture of it.
Never thought of a folding tripod seat. That'd work. Thanks
VTer, was it the hunters seat? Here is a link

I was using a Tree Seat like the one from 3 Rivers yesterday.

It's got my endorsement!!!
Phil
Okie, that's it! I was trying to find it on-line, thanks.
Cant beat the price on this one!

The tree seat that is on Torges web site is cheap and works well. You can make it as big or as small as you like. I made one thats folds so it would fit in a pack. You can add a pad or modify it to your needs. Cost......a few dollars at most!
I forgot, you can also google the Hunters Smart Seat..........it works well also and it's made in Vermont!
I have one based on Torge's version. I changed the knot system. It's a great hunting tool.

What are the dimensions of your seat? Did you use plywood?
Thanks.
Try and Google marsh seats. I use to make these when I was a duck hunter they are a T style seat that is easy to make and pretty comfortable.I can walk you through how to make one if you want.
Oops! I guess I didn't scroll down far enough. :knothead:
It looks to me like the Torge's system would have the seat fold forward and down on you as you put weight on it. Thats wh I havent attempted it before, obviously not huh? Is it because the rope is tied toward the center of the seat? Phil
Mine is 1/2" outdoor ply. In use I toss the line around a tree while holding the seet up against the trunk with my knee. I pull the line on the back of the tree up a foot or so above where I want the seat level to be. If you tension it so it is at about a 30° up angle with you off it it will be about level with you on it. The attachment angle of the line leverages it tight as the seat angles down. I got fancy and added split high-pressure steam line as added grip and to protect the wood.
And, as a tip, set it high enough so your knees are not above your hips. If they are you have to lean forward to stand up (too much movement).
DO NOT use it as an elevated seat. If it slips or you didn't get it tight it will tip you off. And if you stood on it and put your weight at or behind the rope pivot it would collapse.
please, no references to firearms.

I use the Torge seat.and nothing else. I missed around with it for about a week and made me 2 of them... they are perfect for me in every way.
Another vote here for the Torges seat. Super light, super quiet, super simple and cheap too. I glued a thin foam seat pad on mine for a little additional comfort.
I've got plywood, rope and the tools so it looks like I'll start making a Torges seat tonight! Thanks everyone for the photos, diagrams and advice. Ya'll just saved me $50- Phil
The good thing about make'n your own is you can modify or change it to your needs. Wider, lighter, camo, padded, folding or what ever you can come up with. I made one ,then another, next thing I was giving them away and improving the design and then giving them away. I think you will be pleased!
I have a Torges seat that I made that is slick, but I've been looking at this one http://www.hunterseat.com/ no rope to go around the tree, looks fast and easy!
how far are the holes on the seat from the tree end?
Mine are 9-10", I checked 2 seats and that's what I have. But you can fool around and see what works for you. But that's a starting point!
Stunpkiller's post with the picture has the scales next to the seat so you can get an idea what size it is.

A fine new friend sent me this and I used it last weekend.
In a couple words- ITS AWESOME!
Nothing in the way of your bow limb....easy as pie to use, no set up no fuss, no muss...just slip it off yoru shoulder and lean it against a tree....need to move? Real easy, real quiet.
A fine product!!

Ray,
Do you think it would be an aggravation if one was mainly still hunting but just wanted to have a good seat handy if that special spot was just stumbled upon? I really like the way the Niff-T-Seat looks and the ease of carry as it snaps onto your belt. The HunterSeat looks great but the length of it making it sort of not compact would probably end up annoying me but I could be wrong.
thanks ron
if you want to sit absolutly still and be comfortable this is what you need, very portable and light weight.

I have one.. Even padded it with some high density foam that was used to ship my laptop in for repairs... covered in some max 4 cloth and a staple gun.... It works great for short hunts
(early bow season evening hunts 45-1.5 hrs max!!!) ..... But I shift about after 45 minutes and that's not god at eye level!!!
So....

I bought the same seat online and used a better shoulder strap system off an old climber... cats meow for ground hunting!!! But as said earlier set it so you can stand up easily....not too low!!! Had a nice doe bust me yesterday for just that reason!!!
Being comfortable makes for a better hunt.. If not (if you're like me..) you fidget!!! ANd being still
(I take lil fighter naps..like cat naps if you will) and find that when I am in that state, I do better, especially in the oak bottoms where you can here 'em before you see em!!!
YMMV
Happy trails, short bloody ones!!
In my old age I need a really comfortable tree seat. I use a Summit tree seat which is like sitting in an arm chair. It's little more to carry around but the best when you get set up.
I have a bunch of big loc-ons put up where I hunt and sometimes will remove the small flip-up seat from the loc-on and strap my Summit on for long sits where I need the comfort. You need a stand with a 30" long base to use the Summit or your feet will be hanging out in space because the tree seat holds you away from the tree a little.

That's the advantage of the Torge's style tree-seat. It's only 12" x 14" or so and you can use the tree rope as a sling to carry it over your shoulder. I sit for hours and then sling it and still-hunt.
I added some padding to mine as my butt is getting bonier with age.

The days I am on the ground I use a Torges seat. A pair of those stadium foam seat pads make it plenty comfy for my 2hr sits.
Wish I could find decent rope that wasn't white, though. From this thread, it looks like I'm not the only one with that problem.
I got camo rope at Home Depot, it's 7/16 or 1/2 in dia. and kind'a soft so it's not noisy. It wasn't to pricey, enough for 3-4 seats 3 seats and a drag rope...lol!
Hey Stumpkiller, I used your design and it works great. The 3 holes clinching the rope is clever and simple. It took longer getting my tools out and finding the materials laying around than the actual build of the seat. And 14"x12" is just right for my rear. Once I got the rope length right it stayed put. I spooked a young buck and then a doe and missed another squirrel but I was comfortable doing it! Still gotta paint it and put a protective edge on the back and some padding and maybe then I'll put a picture up(along with hopefully my first longbow kill). Thanks again, I love this place! Phil
I'll bet you make more than one....lol!
