Title: A fun morning with a decoy
Post by: centaur on November 10, 2010, 12:10:00 PM
I got a Montana decoy last week and this morning I put it out for the first time on a well used trail. Had a doe come right in to it, which I missed, but she stayed around for another 10 minutes or so, really confused by the whole situation. As soon as she left, a spike came in and literally sniffed the decoy. At one point I would have had a 5 yard broadside shot at him, but I don't want to burn my buck tag. Here are a couple of pics of deer in another spot this morning; still not rutting. They are hanging together in bachelor groups. I'm hoping the change in the weather (as you can see it was snowing like crazy this morning) may get their rutting started. These bucks are going to get a pass this year and I hope to see their daddy soon.

That is really cool.  I have never tried a decoy but may do so now.

What model did you get?  I got one this year with the head up. I wanted the head down feeding one, but Cabelas was out, and I had points to use to get it.  I put mine out twice, but didn't see anything those days so no idea how it will work.  This sounds good.  I may get it out again this week.

Never used 'em on deer, but on an elk hunt this year my montana elk decoy worked great.  I was actually able to walk right up on elk on three different occasions within 25-40 yards in the open.

Good luck to you...hope daddy comes along soon.

Travis
