Managed to take this Bull on Sunday. I was sitting a stand that is in a narrow strip of brush between two oat fields. The crop was planted late and was cut two weeks ago. There is a 20 foot elevation difference between the east field and west at the brush strip. I'm at eye level with critters on the east side but have installed some cut spruce boughs behind me to break up my outline. I can hunt this stand on any north wind. We have had a lot of south winds this fall and weather has been mild so far. There is a trail that critters use to travel from one field to the other about 15 yds. from my set-up. I can also shoot to the edge of the east field at the same range. I can see a lot of the west field and only a small portion of the east. There is a finger of the field that goes to the NE of my location and the deer like to bed in just off the finger. I got in stand a little later than I wanted. The time change threw me off a bit. I sat for a half hour and did a rattle sequence hoping to draw in a Buck. After about 20 mins I heard some brush breaking about half way down the finger on the east side. I stood and got ready for some action. I wasn't expecting the cow to step out even though there is a good Moose population in the county where I hunt. She looked back over her shoulder and I knew there was something else with her. She came towards me and stopped again at the head of the trail. I was thinking of filling my freezer before the Whitetail Rut gets heavy. As I get ready for a shot she ran down the trail way too fast and was in the west field. She looked back again and soon I heard some more brush breaking and out stepped a Bull from the same spot. He grunted and came along her scent trail. He stopped at the head of the trail and grunted again. Then trotted down the trail towards the cow. I grunted loudly and he stopped in my shooting lane. Shot was good angling forward. He chased the cow out into the field but slowed to a walk after about 50 yds. He then stopped and his head hung down. He stood there for about a minute and I thought he would tip over right there. But he turned and walked slowly back to the brush edge and disappeared. I waited about 15 min. and sneaked out. Later my wife and I found him about 20 feet into the brush. He went about 150 yds. and I'm sure was down before I got out of my stand. The spread is just over 35".
I used a 52# Kempf "Little Grizzly" longbow and Woodsman broadhead.

Congradulations! Great bull story and that will fill the freezer nicely!
That is a great end to a hunt.
If he doesn't fill your freezer I would be greatly amazed.
How much meat will you get off of a critter that size?

Good thing you guys don't need freezers up there. You would have to have one the size of the short yellow school bus I used to ride. Awesome critter, congrats.

Good job on the bull. :clapper:
Very nice, here in Nova scotia the 2nd rut is also on. I seen 2 big bulls fighting yesterday. But the season for moose is over out here. Just curious how u made out with penetration with 52# longbow and what was your aprox arrow weight. The reason I'm asking is that I also hunt with a 52# longbow but I wasn't to sure about going after moose with it.
Congrats! That is a great bull!

To answer some questions:
Roy, about 300 lbs. boned out on this one.
Marc, Curt, I think they are about 580 gr. total. I've been using this arrow combo a few years and can't remember what the numbers were when I put everything together. As long as it flies good I don't care. I draw 29". They have about 330 up front. I use 4-4" feathers, fletched 75-105. Arrow went in to the fletch. (Enough-dead is dead) Arrow went in mid body thru last few ribs and stopped at a rib behind opposite leg. I've had to drop down to this bow because of arthritis in my shoulders bugging me. Plus I figure come snow and cold it won't be such a strain. Hey I used to shoot 75# for everything back in my prime.
This is the first time I have left an arrow in a Moose. The five pounds I dropped may have been the difference but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one again.
We had a guy in our trad club kill a P&Y Bull a few years back with a 41# Recurve and the arrow was sticking out the other side.
And yeah its always fun when you see a Moose close from a deer stand which can be any time around here.
Tim, You would be hanging out quite a bit. Its all about camera angle. ;) Thats only 35" spread.
Troy, 60". I don't know why it looks so long. Our Moose aren't that big.
Phil, its a Moose not an Elk. :D
