How many times have I heard and read that????
Friday nite I was covered up in deer. Saw 3 shooter bucks in the distant wetlands (jungle), finally the biggest came in to 30 yds east of me,off my left side,I videoed him with a new flipvid thingy my wife gave me for early birthday.I'll post vid when I learn how.... :knothead:
He was a really super 8 for MO Clean, wide, thick pretty tall. My guess(not that it matters) was 145-150 P&Y .
Then he took a run at a little buck to the north, then with 20 min of lite left,he sauntered along beside me to my left still. He passed at 20 yds.
Here lies the trouble, I had a halfdozen does eating acorns 4-15 yds south or in front of my stand. They had been giving me the eye for 15 min. trying to catch me moving. A BIG lump like that just don't look right there....
So I let the buck walk right thru that lane at 20 yds(is 10 feet wide a lane?)hoping he would smell around the does and distract them, plus I'd have all the deer where I could see them.
He lacked about 12-15", thats right ,inches, clearing the last tree at 10 yds. Then he turned strait away and walked right outta my life!
Moral of the story- I shoulda had my bow turned to the side and extended, then damn the does, full speed ahead!
Oh yeah, after the deer all mosied off, I shot a leaf in near dark at the 20 yd trail.........

If there is any consolation, it sounds like you had a super afternoon in the stand and made some good memories! :)

The title says it all!! Maybe next time bud
-
There won't be any doubt about it the next time!

I'd be happy seein' a deer. Shoot one for me.

but... waiting for the high % shot does make good sense.....too. :dunno:

Once your quarry is w/i your effective range, then I would always recommend taking the shot. The odds for obtainig a chip shot is in favor of the house.
Turkeys,in my experience, seem to be an even poorer gamble on getting a better shot opportunity.

At least you have the memory.Crap happens good on you for keeping your composure!

I know the feeling Kenny, Had a real nice 8pt. behide a sapling last week in Pa. needed one more step and a guy stops on a road 150 yards below and hollars hey get out of here to deer standing in the road and spooks my buck off! Just my luck! Hoot

Had an Illinois "brute" (this deer is 4.5 and about 160") at about 16 yds this evening. Does around like you. I guess I could have pulled the shot off but I want this deer hit right and down. I tucked my head and watched him leave looking under my hat brim. Next time, next time.
-
You did the right thing, with a halfdozen does eating acorns 4-15 yds in front of your stand. They would have busted you the minute you started moving and all those deer would be looking in that tree for you from now on! That is from my experiance.

You had a great day, and saved your spot. I think you did ok. Too many eyes have ruined me in the past.
-
don't pass up something on the 1st day that you would shoot on the last
-
Agreed, take the first good shot that's offered!
I've pulled off shots at bucks before when I had several does under me.. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Don't be afraid to succeed !

I had a "good" shot opportunity at a really nice 10 last year. 8 yards broadside, walking slowly. But I let him pass me so I could stop him and then get a "perfect" shot. Of course he never did what he was supposed to do to give me the "perfect" shot. He still lives as far as I know. I'll kill him this year. That's what keeps us going isn't it?

I made it work last week. Three large, smart does behind me and the buck in front. I'm in a tree saddle so the does are at my back and I'm trying to keep the tree between the buck and I. When he moved off to the left, I swung, drew and released in one motion. The does stayed right where they were until the buck crashed off. When you gotta go, you gotta go.
-
Just another good reason to shoot every doe you legally can.
-
It's risky to take a shot you are not 100% sure you can make. I let a monster (160") walk this AM because all he gave me was a straight away shot. I know 95% of guys would take it because he was a "monster", but to me that's the best reason not too. I might see him again, if I made a poor hit I wouldn't.

Awesome story Kenny. That type of experience drives ya nuts but then I always cant stop smiling on the ride home with that feeling like you have been snookered. Unless its the end of the season and then you are just pissed!!

I am saddened to learn a gunner took him out, no more longbow huntin him.
He had a 19.5 spread and 8" bases, that is all I've learned so far. May we have a moment of silence.....
:(

I've taken some shots I wished I hadn't, didn't take some shots I wished I had.
After hunting a long time with wheels, then a few years with recurves/longbows, back to wheels, back and forth again .... take the shots you think you can make - head on, quarter to, straight underneath you .... if you 100% think you can make it, TAKE IT
I'd bet 2/3 the animals shot and lost are broadside - aka the perfect shot. funny huh ?
