Title: Where to find wool longjohns
Post by: dan d on November 07, 2010, 06:57:00 PM
Where do you find wool long johns or base layer as the high tech people call it, like Joe keith just gave away ? His were called penmans, 95% wool , I asked twice on that post and recieved 1 answer saying cabbalas, I looked thru my cabalas catalog as well as their online store and all I saw was high tech crap, which was not 95% wool, some merino blend of high tech crap. I googled the name penman and all I found were hats. I guess I'm just thick headed and need pointed in the right direction.
Thanks,
Dan

Ulfrotte is an excellent, super high quality brand. You'll have to look it up online, the guy I used to buy it from retired. Best johns I've EVER had. EVER.  One of the top three pieces of equipment I'd choose if I only had three choices. Others being a bow, and arrows.
I have a set in every weight they offer, including socks. You can layer the merino wool long johns!

Thanks guys ! Now were getting somewhere, welcome to the forum John Henry, I like the looks of That filson stuff. The Ulfrotte stuff says it's 65% wool, filson is 100%, but I am still studying the ulfrotte web site, I might be missing other stuff there, thanks again everyone !

Ulfrotte 65% wool. Yup but 100% is terrynitted and touching your body like a fine wool sock! The other 35% of poly and spandex is just what it is woven on/in to, to give it long lasting durability.
Great low temp, low activity thermal. If your more "active" the 100% poly "brands" might be better for you as they will dry faster if you break a sweat.

I bought two pairs of lightweight Merino wool longjohns that I really like from Campmor.com for a really good price.

I wear one set when it's cool, and both sets when it's cold. One pair is silk lined and was more expensive, but I can't tell the difference. That Merino wool is fine stuff. No itch, and machine washable.

Thanks for explaining that Swampthing,Thanks Don, I'm looking for something for low activity like sitting last night up in a tree in 20 something degree weather. The older I get I see that the fancy trendy stuff still doesn't compete so that's why I want 100% wool. I remembered thinsulate being advertised as the greatest thing, now I see a whole new generation of fancy names out there. I just want good old fashioned wool like grampa used to wear, I'm learning that Grampa new what's best LOL, I would of never dreamed old fashioned wool was still tops until I started reading the whisperings here about it and then found out myself.

I've tried Penmans, but I found them too itchy to wear. Just my opinion, but I recommend you try the Filsons. They are pricey, but worth the money.

Have both filson and smartwool, both great, the filson a bit "puffier"/warmer under 0' the smartwool washes /dries quicker and is cheaper...splitting hairs on both........underarmor and many poly pro needs some activity...sitting only, they kinda suck.

I have both wool and the new stuff with all the bells and whistles. For sitting I use the new stuff, for walking around and some still hunting I use the wool. I have found that depending on your age , and how fit you are the wool is not easy to sit with for long periods of time. I think the new stuff keeps the heat in better, and is more wind resistant for long sits. This is just my opinion.

I just came from a full day (actually the 3rd day) of using mine. I have both Ulfrotte and Minus 33 brand. Both are awesome. The Minus 33 doesn't have quite the loft but is just a soft and warm as the Ulfrotte.

I found the minus 33 on fleabay. It costs quite avbit less.

If it gets windy you will appreciate some kind of windproof lining in a vest, or jacket if it is really freezing, Sleeping Indian make real nice ones, quiet too. If your gonna be hoofin it, though, take it off and tuck it in your pack then put it on after you get to where your gonna sit.

I am goingto be getting a couple sets of the merino wool longjohns, probably not in time for this yr, but next for sure. First Lite stuff gets awesome reviews, although it is expensive.

The advantage to the Merino wool over polypro is smell. The polypro gets pretty ripe, such as the UnderArmor and the military stuff I use. Wools does not do that, and the elk hunters who do a lot of back country trips swear by it.

For wind resistant layering, I have a set of the Cabelas packable rain gear. Its their Dry-plus stuff, very light weight and packs into a little stuff sack the size of a beer can. I wear it as a layer under my outer clothing, as it does a great job not only beating the icy wind, but works well to contain your scent too. Its thin enough that it doesnt bulk you up.
