Title: Awesome head!
Post by: 2Blade on May 26, 2007, 12:59:00 AM
Today I wanted to change my heads on my wood shafts so I broke out the torch and went to town removing nocks and field tips from my broken arrows to use on my good ones and to have some back up accessories. Well I put on the Magnus 2 broadhead on my shaft and went to my target. This 160gr 2 blade head fly's great out of my bow and they are huge I cant imagine the hole they will put on a deer. Is anyone else trying these heads this year? If your in the market for a new head give these heads a serious look they are well worth it cant wait to try them out on a deer.

Proly oughtta change the title to awesome broadhead.     :biglaugh:

Magnus heads are pretty much all I shoot besides the occasional woodsman. I shoot the 2 blade vented 125's with a 125 gr. insert on my carbonwoods.
Tough, time tested, priced right. Sharpen easily too.

Last year I made up some "Frankenstein" heads. These heads were 100 grain vented Magnus head with a 100 grain steel screw in insert.I was amazed how they flew and the damage they did on a deer I spine shot. It seems  a vented head always flies better for me.Very catchy thread title by the way.

I've used the 125 vented Magnus heads. Never shot anything but foam with them, but I was very impressed with how well they flew, and even the 125's are big! I'm going to use either them or 3 blade WWs this year. I'm shooting a different bow than last year, so it will be whichever flies better.

I have some Magnus 160 BHs tricked up with a heavy insert to 260 grains.  They have slain both deer and hogs and yes, they make quite an impression when they hit their mark!

I hope they're reeeeaaaaalll patient. A good bit near sighted and stuffed up with allergies would help too! I'll make it there one of these days.

Check out Charlie Lamb's last hunt out west in the Memorable Hunts section. I remember he used the 4-blade version of the Magnus 160 (same main blade diameter). Couldn't believe the trail he got on a mulie...

Some guys let the large size of the Magnus I scare them off... even as a two blade. I've run them through lots of stuff while using the bleeders and this is pretty typical penetration.

Charlie, that's some nice artwork. that red really shows on the white snow back ground.

question on the weight difference. if you were switch and put the 160's in place of some 125's how much weaker would that make the spine?  would i be able to shave a 1/8 - 1/4 inch from my shafts to get them back where they are or would i need to do anything?

That's why I use 4 blades!

And the best part is, most time you don't even need the blood trail......they go down in site.

Gotta love them pics Charlie!   :jumper:    :jumper:    :jumper:    :jumper:

Rob... I'd say if you are borderline weak in spine, the extra 35 grains isn't gonna help things. Other than that I guess you could tweek it if you had to... might not make a bit of difference.

Remember the two blade Magnus I comes in two sizes... 160 gr. like we've been talking about and 135 gr.

I've used the 160's since they came out, I pretty much had to, since I asked Mike Sohm to come out with them and told them how I thought they should be. I've shot quite a few animals with them(wouldn't recommend them for water buffalo!), but I had excellent performance from them on lots of African animals up to the size of blue wildebeest and on a large mainland muskox. I haven't bought any lately, but when they first came out with the 160's I weighed them all and they averaged about 152-153 grains, Mike said thats as high as they could get them with out expensive retooling.

I'm a 2 blade shooter and have seen numerous posts about how a 2 blade "slit" will just close up and stop the blood trail. If only they saw those pics of Charlie's. WOW!

Take note of the pic with the arrow laying on the ground. That is where the deer was standing when the arrow hit.

How often do you all have that much blood on the ground at the site of the hit.

Not trying to start an argument, just food for thought.

Those pics are truly amazing! I think I've settled on what I'm shooting this year. Assuming I draw a tag of course.
