Title: Special needs youngster needs a little help
Post by: Flatshooter on November 01, 2010, 11:59:00 AM
I just posted this with the Florida guys but  thought I'd give it a little more exposure here. A buddy of mine here in TN has a nephew in Lakeworth, Florida who is a 13 year old special needs youngster. He is about to receive his first recurve bow and needs someone to spend a little time with him to get him started. Can anyone in the Lakeworth area spare a little time to get him on the right track? Carl Hammons, the boy's uncle can be contacted at 931-993-4821 or 931-364-7503. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just got off the phone with Carl and got the details.  Will be calling the family tonight or tomorrow and see where things go from there.

Turns out the bow that was sent for the 13 year old is 46@28.

Does anyone have a lighter bow 25-35 lb they would be willing to loan for a while.

If my brothers rehab is ok I might be able to get a 25 but I am looking for options.

Thanks
Les

Tim I have not.  Decided to meet the young man first and get an idea of physical size and strength.  Turns out he is left handed.

I will keep everyone in the loop and appreciate all the offers.

Got to spend 1 1/2 hours with Kyle and his grandpa this afternoon.  We spent time going over basics, equipment and  exercises for the rhomboid.

Though Kyle was way over bowed, my 42 and his cousins 48 he was able to let some arrows fly and hit the target every time.    :goldtooth:

Turns out Kyle is   left handed  but right eye dominant  and he really wants to shot his cousins RH bow. We decided to start off right handed.

Was able to get a light weight bow tonight after leaving and will be seeing him again tomorrow.

Thought I would give an update. Kyle has shown some real improvement.   He has built up his muscle strength, his form and is shooting very nice groups within the 10 yard limit I set for him.
He was a little startled when I took away the first bow I provided (PSE recurve 20lb) after a set of drills telling him it would not do anymore. Walked him over to my truck and presented a 35# Samick Sage and some arrows I had fletched up for him.

Wasn't sure how he would handle the 15# increase.  This young man showed me.  turns out he had been using the form master on his uncles 45# bow and working out regularly while shooting the 20 for form.

I am having a great time working and shooting with Kyle.

Bill I know you really want to make those arrows.  I just cant tell you what to make due to the progress Kyle is making.  At 35# he is at the minimum florida draw weight for hunting.

Merry Christmas to all.

PS. if anyone has a need for gently used PSE 25# youth recurve please post here. If more then one person responds in the next week I will have a drawing on New Years eve.

Les,  i have a perfect person in mind that could use the recurve,  His name is Adonis and is 7 years old , he knew nothing about hunting until he met me and is fascinated by my bow and arrows and the deer i have killed.   He is being raised by his cousin because his father is not around and his mother don't want him. it's sad and his cousin does not have extra money for a bow.  He shows interest in shooting.   It would be a blessing for him, and make him happy.   thanks.

If you haven't found someone send me a PM.  I can contact the National Archery in the Schools Program coordinator for Florida's Wildlfife Agency, who probably has an instructor near this youngster.  The Eleven Steps to Archery Succss taught in the NASP are identical whether one shoots traditional or not.

The bow that started this is on it's way to to the Great North. GREATBROWNKNOCKEMDOWN's story fit the ticket and it is on the way.

Just finished a FF flemish string for Kyles 35# and hope to get out there this week.
