Went to one of my stands that is about 200yrds from a huge sand wash and found these track with deer tracks running ahead of them.Looks like they were chasing down some deer. What do you think they may weigh. They are from two sets of tracks. I used a 125gr Snuffer as a reference.

Just glad (they) weren't chasing me! :scared:
... mike ...
Are the claws showing? Big puppy? 100 pounds.
It's Ole 3 toes!! Yikes!!!!
Better put two arrows on your string..lol
Seriously what is it a track of in your opinion?
God bless,Mudd
Mudd,It's a coyote and they are in numbers in this area I hunt. From the yelping and howling at night the pack has to be at least 15-20 strong. They say that yotes in South Jersey are 35-40 lb I think he may go way over that mark.
Don't discount a domestic dog. I've followed the tracks of a golden retriever I watched walk through the wood, until it hit a deer track.
Why not dogs?
I would say it's a domestic or feral dog. Too round to be a coyote track. Coyote tracks are 1/3 longer than they are wide and rarely show webbing between the toes.
Big Lab, Swamp Collie or something, I'd say.
OkKeith
It is not that easy to ID from those pics but the tracks look a bit 'round' to be coyote. JMHO
Don't know what it is, but coyotes always sound like a bunch more than whats really there. Not saying you don't have a lot of them but a few can sound like a lot.
Looks like a dog track to me as well.
Thats a dog track...coyotes toes are closer together.
Dog for sure. Round overall print. Wolf/coyote elongated with longer center toes. Oval overall shape.
Joshua
Guys I'm not sure what it is but i can tell you that a coyotes front foot is round and its hind foot is oval and smaller than the front.
I have to agree with the others on dog track!!
lpcjon2, we do have the largest of the coyotes, run 30lbs. to 50 lbs. from what I've heard. My two friends saw what they thought were two big dogs on the property and it turned out they were yotes. We hunted by the race track in Englishtown.
yup dog track..
Nice big track--I shot a Utah coyote that tipped the scale at 34lbs--my biggest so far--usually they are around 25lbs
Looks more like dog tracks than coyote. But your coyotes are not realy real coyotes. Wolf hybrids type things. Go call them in and poke them. Maybe 30-45 lbs. thier paws will spread out in mud or snow. Still big. good pictures.
It may be a dog I don,t know it's running deer pretty hard at night.I go by every morning after a night hunt to check. I will try to get some more pics, can't do a trail camera it would be gone (thieves). Thanks for all the input.Tim
A coyote will leave 2 different sized tracks- their back feet are smaller than their front feet, not a lot, but noticeable.
Looks way too big to me to be a coyote...and I've seen, skinned and mounted some big coyotes....but anything is possible.
As for not having "real coyotes"...we absolutely do have real coyotes! Their called Eastern Coyotes for a reason.
What I ment was yours are larger than ours. :)
Looks like a dog to me.
A dogs hind paws are smaller than the fronts too. Just go over and take a look at your dog thats probably laying on the couch...
I've never seen a round coyote track personally. They all showed the two center toes being longer thus elongating the print. Running or loping. Don't know if I have ever seen a coyote actually walking along. Hunting yes but not strolling like he was taking in the air.
But I have not seen them all.
Joshua
Never seen or heard of a coyote that big, I would say a dog...PR
One thing we know for sure is that it isn't an elephant track.
I added a pic of some scat I found 20 yrd away from the location I found the track.

Glad I already finished lunch...
njloco,
30 # dogs are big, a 40# dog is worthy to tell your family and friends, a 50# you will be written up in Fur,Fish and Game!
Most people think they are much bigger till they put them onthe scale, kind of like a 150# doe!
Just sayin.... Doeboy
I'd say it's a dog track, too. The scat is probably dog, too. My neighbor's dog leaves coyote-looking scat. They don't feed him much and he supplements his diet with anything he can catch.
Looper the scat was full of hair that looked like deer hair to me.
Who says the scat was left by the dog that made the tracks? I am a fed coyote trapper. The scat looks like coyote, and old, by the color. The track is dog.
It is legal here to shoot dogs running wildlife. How about where you are? That dog needs to go.
Shedrock Im not sure what the dog law is in NJ. I did find some fresher stuff also,Could a domestic dog that is wild run with the yotes?
They may run with the coyotes there, but here, the coyotes kill the dogs.
I would reserve judgement on the dog... tracks in the same place don't necessarily suggest one creature was chasing the other, much less that it posed a serious threat.
Not to worry I wont pass any judgment on any K-9 unless it gives me a reason to. This is not a thread about that and I don't want it to be one.
I'm just saying if you see the dog chasing game here, collar or not, you can shoot it.
I just saw a german shepard running the heck out of some deer here, but they were long gone before I could get to them.
Our deer are getting into wintering stages, and don't need some dog wearing them down. Sorry, but I will shoot the dog if possable.
