weight of bow use for big game hunting
I use anything between 39-50lbs
All my bows are 50-53lbs.
So if you shoot a 50# bow is that 45/50 or 50/55?
I shoot mostly 50# bows...but the one I have on order will be 65-70#. I suspect it'll take me several months to a year to get good with it.
I went from 55 to 66 to 85 to 96 to 79 to 64 and 64 for a long time, then to 57.5 to 53 to 51 and 51, but today I am going out with that oh so sweet 57.5 yew and bamboo job.
Occasionally hunt with 55# but normally 65#-80#.
Presently working on building strength, stamina, and conditioning to hunt gators with my 102# longbow.
Just cause I want to and it's fun. :archer:
I hunt mostly elk and sometimes mule deer and all my bows(5) range from 55-62#. I would prefer to shoot more but this is where I am most comfortable.....Shawn
Kind of a vague question. Is it what I feel is a minimum for hunting or what I personally use? I voted my personal use but I have and sometimes hunt with bows from 40# and up.
48#
I have two bows, one, my first longbow, 72#@30 1/2( but I actualy draw 29 with longbows...) and my second bow, a hybrid 60#@29, I seem to reach for my 60# more... I want a recurve and I'm thinking 55 or 60 but don't know yet. I hunt moose and caribou.
I shoot 46 to 56, depending upon why I'm shooting, what I'm shooting at, how much I've been shooting and how cold it is. Any of those draw weights will kill a white tail if that little problem called an arrow goes where it's supposed to. I never fee underbowed with those moderate draw weights.
My two primarily bows are a 51# longbow and a 48# recurve. However, I'm giving serious consideration to ordering a new 53# longbow.
At my T-Rex draw of 26" most of my bows are 47-51#'s.
... mike ...
lightest marked 42# @28, heaviest marked 58#@26
I'm in the 60# + catagory.
-Mack
41# - 48# @ 28"
I draw 29.5"
At age 57, shoot 70# longbows most of the time but drop to low 50's in extreme cold here in N.H.
my 57# rose oak will kill anything I would ever want to hunt
I use 57-60# bows.
For elk and wild boar anything from 60 to 66#.For other games 55 t0 60#.Special hunt in my future Australia and Alaska 70-75# I am practicing with 73# right now.
After shoulder and elbow surgery can't support much more than 45# now. Big game consists of deer very close.
I cast my vote. This should be a very interesting poll.
46# to 53# for me.
Both of my hunting bows are marked 54# @ 28".
Both of my recurve bows are marked at 62 pounds. As a right-handed shooter I am contemplating buying a 50 something longbow due to severe tendonitis in the left elbow...
I shot a Hoyt Gold Medalist for several years at 87#. They were the heaviest set of limbs that Hoyt ever made for the GM. They wouldn't guarantee them. After about 4-5 years they warped. Sent them back to Hoyt and Earl steamed them back to straight. But it took them down to 67#. I have been stuck in the 63 to 70 pound range for 15 years or so. Fianlly old age and a bad back have forced me down to 57#. The higher poundage cleans up a poor release and the extra arrow speed will get you through some lower windows. Is poundage over 45# needed? Not really. But if you can handle it well, then use it.
I suspect that we will all agree that shooting the poundage that you shoot best is the most ethical poundage.
my bows run from 47 lb to 56 lb now used to beale to shot 89 lb BW all day be this age thing is killing me now
56 to 60 pounds.
my R/D is 67# at 26"
55 to 60 pounds for me.
Mine is 47.5#
My current inventory of bows range from 55# to 60#. My favorite weight for some reason seems to be 57 lbs on a 62" bow.
55-60 here also.
recurve 60
longbow 63
45#s unless the state demands more then 50#s
51# to 58# @ 32"
47 lbs works good for me
43-47#
50/55 just depends on what limbs I feel like shooting (only shoot ILF rigs now)
ttt
I have been hunting with a 65# Grizzly this year. The heavier weight seems to simplify the release process for me. It just pulls itself off my fingers, no concious effort needed.
I'm editing my post to just say vote cast at 60# and up. I don't want any conclusions drawn of me for my choice in bow weight :)
48# for me to be my best.
