i have a hunt coming up at ray hammonds next weekend and i was wondering at scent control. i have'nt done much hog hunting. when i'm deer hunting i try to use the scent free soap and deoderant and sometimes a cover scent. do you guys that hunt hogs a lot use any of these or do you just play the wind.
thanks benji
I'm sure Ray would fill you in on this. I just use the same process on all hunting. Wash clothes in scent free soap, baking soda and step in cow pies. Other than that hogs will smell ya' at least as well as deer do, so pay attention to the wind. And don't forget your camera-you are going to have fun!
Benji. You can try all that stuff. What i have found is if you have an opportunity take it . DO NOT waste time. The wind will switch and you will be sol.
Have some type of wind indicator(feather puffer bottle etc) Use it and pay attention to it.
Have fun the hogs are thick here and you are coming on a good weekend as far as the Moon goes.
Michael
I agree with Michael, forget about scent control and hunt the wind. I was down Ray's in May, he told me how good pigs can smell. I shot a sow at about 18 yards in the river cane. She ran off and there was still pigs in the cane. I watched another walk out in the same spot that I shot the sow. Instead of shooting, I got my puffer bottle out and watched the powder go towards her. As soon as she caught my wind, they were all out of there. She made some kind of noise and everyone ran. I wanted to know just how they would pick me off. Impressive. I could of shot more that afternoon by stalking and watching the wind.
Bbedebedeee- that's all folks!!!!
Five times better noses than deer. You are NOT fooling them!
Well, I guess that says it all, I think Ray ought to know!!!!!
Benji, bring you a couple of puffer bottles. you can do all you usually do for deer hunting but if they are down wind and you BREATH they will smell you !
hey ray. how important are the binoculars. mine new ones just got backorded from cabelas. they were suppose to be here tomorow. i suppose that i can borrow some from one my buddies.
benji
When I'm on the ground stalking I don't worry about my scent, but do hunt the wind. When deer hunting from a stand I'm concerned about leaving ground scent.
Benji,
I have a extra pair of bino's you can use.
Benjy
All right Benjy
You need binocs. Not expensive ones but something
I would do the same as I always do--try to stay clean and play the wind!
I've been hunting hogs for over 40 years, doesn't matter if your clean or not, if they get downwind, games over. Poor eyesight, you can practically stand still in the open and they will walk up to you, but the nose will get you every time. Keep that puff bottle in your hand while stalking and use it regular. RW
I've heard of a crazy scent control suggestion for hogs. It was to use a spray bottle of diesel as a masking/attractant scent. NOT on your body but just on the vegetation that you walk through.
I know they like creosote and stuff for getting rid of insects and parasites on there skin so I could buy that they might like the diesel as well.
Again I'm not sure if this is just an old wisetale or not so take it for what it's worth which may not be much.
but the ecological damage? Its true- they love creosote posts, posts with rags tied around them slathered in used motor oil etc....but I don't want MY land or the land I'm hunting on having deisel fuel or used motor oil put out on it.
Amen Ray!
Hogs have a great sniffer. I have gotten away with more while deer hunting than hog hunting. They catch a whiff and it is over.
If I could I'd invent a continual puff puff bottle with the way the wind can switch every 10 secs in the low lands...humm might be an idea
of course you smokers have it covered.
The nose knows. You can get away with a little movement and get away with a little noise but you will never get away with them smelling you.
