Most Hang on Stands are put up before the season and taken down after it's over.
Is anyone using it like a climber? I have a Muddy Hang on I rarely use. Mostly because I now hunt public land and prefer not to leave it. I've been thinking about the Muddy climbing sticks. Would this be practical? I'd like to use this stand more often. My concern is I would be spending "too much" time getting set up everytime I go to use it. I like to get to my tree and get up asap in order to avoid leaving too much scent around the tree.

I put it up before season or first day in hunt camp.Take it down when done hunting it.
Most all of my hang on stands are set for the season and taken down when done, especially the heavier ones :D
For my up/down in/out hunts I use a tree saddle. I used to always do the same with a Lone Wolf hang on, fairly light weight and easy to hang... I just wanted something more light weight and went with the Tree Saddle.
It can definately be done, you will just have to know that you need more time to get set up and be proficient in hanging your chosen stand... especially in the dark of morning... and make sure to wear a lineman's belt!
I put mine up right before the season and usually have someone else take them home with them! Someday I'll catch one of them so I can go to their house and get them back!

I take most of mine down at the end of the season. There are a few that I leave up year round on Private property. They are heavy duty chain on home built ones, stong and quiet and yes heavy.
I use a Lone Wolf stand and sticks if I find a hot spot during the season. I don't leave it in a tree overnight very often, to expensive.

how does the knees feel after being in the tree saddle. looks like a lot of pressure on the joints.

I only leave a few hang on stands in trees overnight. I usually hang them in the morning and take them down when i leave.
I can hang my LocOn Windwalker and be ready to hunt alot faster than I can put my climber on a tree and be ready to hunt. I know its because I almost always use a hang on and have become effficient at setting them up. I don't use a clomber much.

On privateland we set and leave hangons using the single pole ladders. On public land I use 4 to 6 ropeon steps with a Locon Windwalker. Been using the Windwalker since the '80s and if I had to choose this would be exclusive! Plus I haven't used a climber since the Baker in '83!!!
Been putting up and taking down hang on stands in the dark before and after daylight all my life hunting in stands.
Finally settled on NonTypical stands..swivel seat, large platform, can be put up on either side with a removable strap...combined with Rapid Rails...excellent.
Ameristep bought license from Wayne to build/market them...changed some things I don't like...but they're swell stands.
It's a chore and makes a fuss in the dark...but I've done it reasonably successful, but only leave em if I'm hunting till dead dark, and am coming back before daylight next day... oh...and that I KNOW nobody saw me. Known folks who were spotted by ONE person and next AM...gone! Stands stolen.

lock ons if i'm leaving all season but i have my summit broadhead for in and out hunts. a good climber is much better than having to set up a lock on every morning.
I generally hang them just for that hunt. On some private land I'll leave them for a couple weeks but that's rare for me. I can hand a stand in under 15 minutes at about 12 feet. I have a climber that's rarely faster than that and it weighs more so it is almost always in my shed at home :)
If legal to use, leaving screw in steps makes it a lot faster to rehang a stand later in the season. You can even leave one to hang the stand on to strap it down. I sometimes do this even just to get the stand up for the season. Good trees for a climber are rare where I hunt, it is a lot more practical to hang a stand where I want it than to be in the wrong spot with a climber. It realy takes very little time to get in a tree if you are efficient in what you are doing. I plan on geting a good set of strap on steps to be even more mobile and I think this will be just as good as a climber with practice.
If you want to see a neat hang on system, check out Chippewa Wedge Loc stands. Watch the video at their site. They don't give them away but their absolutely easy to put up using their climbing sticks. It's patented.

1. Using a dremel tool, I write "Stolen From:_____, along with my telephone number on the sides of the stands.
2. I chain everyone of them to my chosen trees with a padlock.
I haven't had one stolen in years, although occasionally some jerk would come along and steal my screw in steps. Now I just spray paint my extension ladders with dark paint and chain them to the trees too. I silence the extensions ladders with those plastic locking ties and chain it down tight.
Works great.
When I was a young guy I could pack a stand back into an area and get it up pretty quickly using tree steps. Now that I'm not so young, or so inclined anymore, I can't do that. In addition to using the Loc-on stands I also hunt from ladder stands, but I don't care that much for them when I'm using one of my bows. Sure are comfortable though.

I don't hunt public land, we don't have much of it in KY anyway and none closer than an hour from where I live. To far to hunt as much as I do.
I use loc-ons and a vareity of steps, rails, and pole ladders. I have a few ladder stands also. I typically putthe stands up before season but always put a couple new ones up or move some inactive ones to new spots during the season. If I hang stands during the season my favorite time is mid-day during bad weather (wind or rain).
I tend to leave most stands up all year. I check them carefully and replace ratchet systems. I put double ratchets on these stands--top and bottom to make them immobile. I'm going to try to remove all stands this winter and store them so they'll last longer.
I have a climber that I rarely use. If I were hunting public land I suppose I'd go to climber's exclusively to prevent theft.
IN my very early days of hunting (1970's) I hunted private land that was used by several people. I used climbers in those days.
Put it up and take it down every time. Takes less than 7-8 minutes. It keeps me portable and stealthy. Most deer I take is first time on a stand- many of those stands are first time set-ups as I find hot deer sign. I can say that nearly ALL the mature deer I have encountered or harvested have been first time into a particular stand site. I also never want to educate other hunters.
I use a LW older stand and sticks. Its all I have.
I use a turkey vest with everything needed in assigned pockets; pruners, saw, etc.

I hang and take down my lone wolf every time. I have a Simmons Woodpecker drill and have trees tapped everywhere I want to hunt. I just slide the bolts in going up and take them out coming down. Once drilled at the first of the season, holes will stay open for the entire season. It's a little more work sometimes, but you get used to it. On some private land that I hunt I leave screw in steps in place the entire season.
I put my stands up and take them down every day. Two reasons. First, I hunt mostly public land. Taking stands down makes room for other folks to have at least the illusion of a solitary hunting experience. I may be in the minority, but I think that is just good manners. Second issue is that it works better, for a variety of reasons.
I often carry 2 stands in, hang 'em both, then carry them both out at the end of shooting hours, because I hunt with my kids. Even that isn't much hassle with my Lone Wolf Alpha Assault stands.
I hunt private land, lock my Ol' Man hang on stand.
My old Loggy cheapseat and Loc On steely.....eh I don't care. I stay in the thicker stuff, do have some folks sneaking about the spots, but they leave them alone (if they find them).
Bottom steps usually pulled. I know I have all my steps on my Loc On's tree now though.
Maybe it's still there, haven't hunted it for 2 weeks.
You can put fast sticks up and hang a stand with more cover then a climber in the same time.
I appreciate all the replys. A lot of good ideas for me to consider. I think a good set of lightweight climbing sticks might make it feasable to use to use the stand like a climber. I also like the tree saddle concept.

I wear cheap foam knee pads and it is very comfortable. If I forget the knee pads, the knees do get uncomfortable.
lone wlf alpha stand and 4 lw sticks can put up quite and fast and in any kind of tree can place it faster than i can climb with a climber
