Title: Skinny strings
Post by: goldflinger on October 25, 2010, 09:32:00 PM
How many strands of fast flight are used in a skinny string? Is an 8 strand string "skinny". How about 10 strand? How do you define "skinny string"?

Leslie,

I have an 8 strand on a high performance R/D. I consider it pretty skinny. A buddy made the bow for me and the string as well. I'm not all that fond of it (the string) but it sure does sling an arrow fast. I also have a FF 12 strand on two of my recurves. They shoot real good for me, but I have to double serve them to get a good release. They both came with them.

I have tried other types of materials and "skinny string technology". I think it makes some difference.

I think 8-10 strands would be considered skinny Leslie.12 would be more medium.Originally most these strings were made with 14-18 strands when FF strings  became popular years ago.

I have strings with 6-8-10.For most FF type materials or low stretch type string materials I find 8 to be a good all around size for me and they shoot well for me.

Just pad the loops for cushion and have the proper serving size for nock fit.

When it comes to skinny bowstrings, I worry about how loose the arrow nock is on the serving. I have a 12 strand Dyna97 bowstring on my 42# recurve. I like it a lot. One of my buddies wants to put a 10 strand Dyna97 bowstring on my 37# bow. I'm leery of that because of the arrow nock on the serving. I'm leaning towards the 12 strand Dyna97 bowstring.

I've only used SBD skinny strings and they are typically 6 or 8 strand based on the weih the string will carry,

I like them not so much for speed, but I find them to be a bit quieter and if I get 2-5 FPS over a 12 or 16 strand FF string even better.

I'm always looking for ways to quiet my bows without sacrificing performance and the SBD strings do that for me. I am sure there are others that are good, but I only have experience with these.

I just ordered two SBD strings, I am worried about shooting my skinny carbons with the serving. I my have to reserve the string to my liking. I think I have thicker serving material.

I have SBD strings on all my bows that can use ff strings, and is highly satisfied.
Just remember to tell Pierre about the nock type you use, and he will provide you with the thickness you need on the serving  :)

I called Brownell 2 days ago about this. If any of you are familiar with TS-1 fast flight material. It is being retired. Many liked it because it is quiet. Astroflight is the replacement. Those who have used it say it is more quiet. TS-1 is .014" in diameter. Astroflight is .015".  They told me with my under 50# recurves I'd be fine with an 8 strand.
